Chapter One
“Heeeeeyyyy!” Cathy strolled into the entrance to the salon. It was after closing time on Sunday and she knew Deidre would be here, doing paperwork as usual.
“Shhhhhh!” Deidre whispered loudly, “Some of us are actually doing the paperwork pertinent to running a salon.”
“Details, details.” Cathy rolled her eyes. “Who needs them?”
“The IRS.” Deidre smirked.
“Blah, blah, blah.” Cathy mocked. “Anyway, don't you want to know what I'm so excited about?”
“Do I have a choice?” Deidre asked, rolling her eyes.
“No. Shut up and listen.” Cathy strolled over to the receptionist desk and sat down. Deidre looked up from her paperwork and glanced at her friend and business partner. She and Cathy had known each other since high school. They went to beauty school together, worked together, and eventually opened their own salon together. Deidre loved the girl but right now she wanted to beat her with said paperwork.
“….And it sells all these really awesome clothes.” Cathy looked at Deidre. “You didn't hear a word I said, did you?”
“Clothes. Yeah, clothes.”
“Grrr. Damn it, Dee! I'm trying to tell you about the new store that opened, like, right next door and the hot guy that runs it!” Cathy exhaled.
“Hot guy? I like hot guys. But knowing your taste, he's probably some redneck who belongs changing tires.” Deidre laughed and threw a pencil at Cathy.
“No. Actually, he's more your type, Dee. Tall, athletic, looks like an anime boy…” Cathy trailed off.
“Anime boy!?!?! Take me to him!” Deidre stood up.
Laughing, Cathy said, “I knew that would get you. You are so easy. You and that addiction of yours.”
“Anime may be an addiction, but at least it's not crack.” Deidre put her pen down and walked over to her styling station. “And hey, it feeds the mind.”
“Yeah, with dirty fantasies, you perv.”
Deidre shrugged. “Eh, what can you do?” With that, she opened the drawer of her station and pulled out a paddle brush. “And besides, I don't see you complaining when you come over to the house and watch Please Teacher with me.” She started to brush her hair, and flatten it down. She looked at herself in the mirror. Deidre was pretty, but she would be the first to tell you otherwise. She never thought of herself as attractive. Previous boyfriends had done well in their job to rob her of her self-confidence. She had shoulder length black hair with purple and red streaks in it, the red and purple did well to highlight her seafoam green eyes. She picked up a bottle of After Party, pumped some out and smoothed it over her hair. “Yay! No more frizzies!” Deidre's hair was naturally curly, but one would never know since Deidre spent plenty of time straightening it. Flat irons were her best friends.
“Well, do you want to see him?” Cathy smiled as she asked.
“Yeah, let me get presentable first.” Deidre quickly applied some light makeup and smiled at the mirror. “You'll do.”
“Come on, drama queen.” Cathy grabbed Deidre's arm and pulled her out into the mall. Deidre smiled as she walked, remembering how she and Cathy always used to bitch about working in a mall salon, and here they were, owning a mall salon.
Cathy led Deidre a little ways down the mall. She stopped and Deidre looked into the store they were in front of. “Wow.”
The store they stopped at was amazing. Deidre could see all kinds of clothes for both men and women and in a variety of sizes. The décor reminded her of all the hip little shops in NYC. Trendy, yet warm and casual. “Well, I see they're not catering to the skinny ho-bag crowd.”
“And why would I do that?” A male voice floated out from the store. Deidre looked into the store and her jaw dropped.
“Holy shit.” She thought to herself. Standing in that store was perfection itself. “I love the mall!”
