She stood in the mouth of the cave, backlit by the afternoon light.
He was so wrapped up in his misery that he didn’t even sense her at first, until the first faint traces of her scent reached him. It teased him, speaking of comfort, and home, all the things that were missing in his life right now. He could smell the sorrow on it, which made the darkness on his heart feel even deeper.
“What are you doing here?” he said, more gruffly than he meant. He did not look up.
“InuYasha,” she said, softly. She stepped into the cave, moving towards him.
“What?” he replied. He looked up. His eyes were reddened, but his look was harsh, shutting himself in. He lowered his head, turned his face away.
She knelt down next to him.
“Come home, InuYasha. Please,” she said. Softly, hesitantly, she rested a fine, small hand on his shoulder.
He glanced at the hand on his shoulder, and looked up at her face. Her eyes, too, were reddened, and her face was drawn and tired.
“You look like crap, Kagome,” he said, taking her small hand into his larger one.. “You gotta take better care of yourself, woman.”
“You don’t look too good yourself,” she said as she let him tug her into his lap.
“Couldn’t sleep,” he commented.
“Me either,” she replied. “The house is too empty when you’re not there.” She buried her face in his suikan. “I am so sorry.”
“Feh. Baka woman, you don’t have anything to apologize for.” He ran his fingers through her hair. “I should have told Sango and Miroku what was going on.”
“I shouldn’t have been so jealous. I should have known better,” she sniffled. “The uchikake and kosode are beautiful. She brought them by yesterday morning.”
He sighed. “I wanted to surprise you. That’s why I spent so much time over at her place. I was trading work for your gift.” He lifted her chin up. “There’s nobody who’ll ever mean what you mean to me, Kagome. You are everything to me.”
He leaned forward, kissed her gently on the lips. It was meant to be a tender kiss, a statement of his love for her, but then he felt her arms wrap around his neck and her tongue brush against his bottom lip. As the kiss deepened, and his want for the small, stubborn, wonderful woman in his arms exploded, his soul rejoiced in the feeling of reconnection, of being made whole.
Once they broke the kiss, he rested his forehead against hers, “I think what we both need is a good night’s sleep,” he said with a soft, husky voice.
“Bed would be very good,” Kagome replied, smiling. Her blue-gray eyes were dark and promising much more than rest..
He stood up, carrying her bridal style. “Let’s go home,” Kagome said.
“Always, if you’re there.” He dashed off into the light.
