Chapter Twenty Two: Blame and Forgiveness

She woke up with a pounding headache. She was aggravated, offended, and wanted to kick some ass.

...that bastard that hit her better have got a beating.

She pinched the bridge of her nose, bemoaning herself as she sat up.

"Inuyasha?" she questioned.

She was answered with a grunt.

Cracking one eye open, she was surprised to find she was in darkness.

...where was she?

"...Inuyasha? Where are we?"

...another guttural noise was her reply.

Growing angry and feeling rather put out, she reached out blindly in the darkness. Maybe if she got hold of one of those cute puppy ears, she could encourage some talking.

"Damnit, Inuyasha, what's wrong with you, why aren't you...?" she began to speak... but she was abruptly cut off by a clawed hand snaking out to grab her wrist in the dark roughly, and she fell forward into a familiar, yet bare, chest.

She felt heat shoot straight up her neck and deep into her hairline, sure that she would catch fire from embarrassment. Not to mention, the quick movement caused a wave of dizziness to hit her suddenly.

"Be careful! My head hurts, baka!" she groaned, pushing against the ground with one hand to stabilize herself but tumbling over Inuyasha's knees instead, finding that not only was she flush against his chest, but on his lap as well.

"Inuyasha..." she was stammering, not even sure what she wanted to say.

His chest was rumbling, and the hand that held her wrist all too tightly pulled her up higher, and she felt his nose buried into her hair a second later, loud sounds of sniffing echoing right next to her ear.

"...Inu...! Cut it out..." she spoke disheartenedly, not quite fully meaning what she was saying, but he was making her uncomfortable with how odd he was acting. She twisted her wrist in his grasp, trying to break free as it was starting to sting, and she squirmed against him.

His response was a throaty growl that veberated through her being, and she stilled. Instead, she laid her head agaisnt his collarbone and relented, allowing him to sniff her while his claws pricked against the sensitive skin on her wrist, causing the tiniest trickles of blood to run down her forearm.

"Inu, you're hurting me..." she whispered, in the smallest of voices, and she knew he would hear her.

But he did not even react.

...it seemed he was unaware of her.

Suddenly, she was crushed to his body by a pair of strong arms, and his growl grew in tenor. She froze, almost afraid to breathe. The wind was nearly knocked from her by the force of it, and she trembled as she felt his nose slide down her grimy hair and bury itself at the juncture of her throat and shoulder. A single, elongated fang ran its way across the skin there, and he pushed away the fabric of the haori to explore the flesh further.

"Inu... you're scaring me..." she was choking on her own breath, her chest constricting at his attentions.

He had never been so close in such a personal way before... he had never been so forward with her, so overtly...

...she wasn't even sure the word she was looking for, and it caused a churning inside of her, a sort of longing that scared the hell out of her.

She leaned away from him as he further pushed the haori from her, his sniffing continuing... down her shoulder and further along her chest.

Before she could protest his actions, having had enough, she felt a warm tongue sliding across her skin.

All she could do was squeak.

She reached up with one hand, grabbing his forelock and cursing at him.

"What're you doing?! Stop it!" she yanked on his hair hard once for emphasis, and was rewarded by being slammed on her back, Inuyasha snarling at her viciously.

She became paralyzed by fear again, feeling as if she had been ran over by a wild stallion when the realization he was not in his right mind came to her.

...she remembered, just then, the raging beast she had come across that she had freed what seemed like a lifetime ago.

A painfully long moment of uncertainty followed, along with the feeling of Inuyasha's warm breath and fangs brushing against her jugular vein. He was still rumbling in threat, but was mostly quiet now, as if trying to ascertain her submission.

And she was more than happy to play dead, knowing he could easily harm her without thinking.

When he seemed satisfied she would not fight him, he leaned over her once more, trapping her body beneath his as he continued to lap at her flesh.

He seemed to cover her entire chest, going up her throat and even over her face.

And then she finally understood.

He's cleaning me...

She forced herself to relax underneath him, as easily as one might be able to with an insane youkai above them.

...yet somehow, deep inside her, she had every faith he would never seriously harm her.

Though, what he did next came unexpected.

While she had begun to close her eyes, almost beginning to enjoy his lavish attentions, he suddenly returned to the place between her breasts. She ignored it, figuring he had perhaps missed a spot.

But her eyes shot open when he nuzzled the cloth that covered her left breast open, exposing it to the cool air. The panic hit her once more like a punch to the stomach, leaving her winded and gasping, and she tried to move away from him.

But he pinned her fast against the ground with his body, and covered the tissue around her nipple with his mouth, sinking his fangs deep inside the sensitive flesh.

She cried out in shocked pain, her hands flying to bury themselves in his hair as she pulled against it, trying to relieve the pressure and hurt. She felt the blood snake its way down her side, and Inuyasha licked at it tenderly with his tongue as he removed his fangs from her.

She bit back a hoarse sob, teething her bottom lip irritably, wishing the throb in her breast to subside.

She didn't push him away when he nuzzled her neck affectionately, though she wanted to and thought better against it.

Giving her one final lick, he settled himself against her as he laid his head against the valley between her breasts, leaving the left one open. She whimpered at the deep stinging, and closed her eyes, a few tears managing to leak away without her permission.

The world seemed still, as she opened her eyes once more to the darkness, wondering absently if her vision would ever get used to this impenetrable blackness.

It was so thick.

Above her, Inuyasha's breathing quieted... he became heavy on her, using her as a futon it seemed, as he unconsciously buried his face into her chest and whuffed softly in his sleep.

She couldn't stop the ironic yet embittered smile that plastered on her face, regardless of the situation. It bothered her on a deeper level that for them to have reached such a level of intimacy, that it had to be forced upon her. She had wanted it, but not that way.

But, she knew she still loved him, even if he had gone so far.

He hadn't been thinking, and she knew it was not his fault. It was all instinct and no rationale. All she had to do was remember their first meeting to know the truth.

Resigning herself to their position for the night, she leaned her head back against the rocky ground, reminded of the throb in her head that had become twice as agonizing after she had been tossed around.

Sighing deeply, she wondered if this would have had to rank as one of the worst days of her life.

It had to rank among the top five.

Nothing would beat that one day.

She could never beat that one day.

...and she would never forget it.

Never forgive it.

But also, never wanted to give it up.

Otherwise, she wouldn't be pinned under the biggest idiot the world had ever known.

Tentatively, allowing herself to touch him finally, she ran her fingers through his tangled and matted mane... rubbing his ears gently, causing him to whine happily. She giggled almost sadly, her fingers wandering down to trace his face with their tips, and she whispered to him softly.

"...you're going to feel so guilty in the morning, aren't you...?"

Once again, thinking of his problems instead of paying attention to her own.

But she knew, there was probably no way Inuyasha would ever let himself live this one down.

That was why... she concentrated on him so. His hurt wounded her deeper than anything that could have ever happened to her.

Furrowing her brows in worry, she stroked the soft skin of his cheek, feeling ever so bad this had happened at all, no matter how much he wasn't at fault.

It wasn't even a completely terrible situation...

He just bit her.

...albeit, it was as sore as a bitch.

Sighing, she returned her attentions to his ears, rubbing one between her index finger and her thumb, and the soft whining returned.

"...if only we had gotten away quicker... if only I was stronger... I'm sorry... I'm so sorry this happened. I'm so sorry you're going feel so shitty..."

Wrapping her arms around him best she could, she sniffled silently, the stress of the day taking over until finally she fought her way into a fitful slumber.

Kagome opened bleary eyes, crusted and glued shut, to the rays of sun that poured through a small opening above her like a prayer answered.

Looking down, she found an angel laying on top of her, peaceful and unpreturbed. His ears flicked every now and then, a sign he was dreaming.

Her eyes roamed over him, examining him for the first time for injuries.

She hadn't had a previous opportunity to.

The first was apparent quickly.

Bloodstained hair and a nearly fully healed stab wound graced his back, but other than that, nothing more.

Drawing her eyes to her own injury, she stared at the four punctures that surrounded her nipple. Lifting the breast up with one hand, she noted how deep it was... yet, they seemed to be closing up nicely, and she remembered Inuyasha's saliva was able to heal wounds quite a bit faster than normal.

...at least she would not have to worry about possible infection.

Though... eyeing it, she realized it wasn't just any normal wound. Silvery marks streaked from them, and she felt her eyebrows lift high when she noted them. She wondered, what on earth was it for and why had Inuyasha's youkai mind found any reason to do such a thing?

...did youkai blood even have reasons?

Eventually, her movement began to rouse Inuyasha, and when she noticed this, she tried to cover herself back up as quickly as possible to avoid him feeling bad about what had happened.

But in her haste, she had been clumsy, and had not realized the bellowing sleeve of the hinezumi haori was stuck beneath the two of them, and her insistent tugging brought Inuyasha into the world of wakefulness much quicker than she had anticipated.

His head lifted off her quickly, and her eyes shot down to lock with his.

Golden pools shining in confusion and uncertainty, his look implored her for answers on their position, and she found she had none.

...instead, she felt herself pale, intimidated by his possible reaction. She went to wet her dry lips with her tongue, her eyebrows crinkling together in consternation.

She watched in trepidition as his eyes drifted downward to her exposed flesh, and his eyes locked with the marks on her breast.

Lowering her own eyes, they came to gaze at his hand, which was slowly lifting.

...it was then, she noticed for the first time, he was trembling.

Unsure fingers came to touch her, tentatively lining the marks in disbelief.

"...did I do this to you?" his voice cracked, so unlike Inuyasha, lacking so much confidence.

"...did I hurt you?"

Kagome raised her own hand, covering his to console him. "No, Inu, it doesn't..."

He cut her off. "Don't lie to me. What did I do?"

She swallowed, ineffectively, her throat dry as a desert.

"...all you did... was bite me... There..." she spoke, feeling it was obvious, but perhaps Inuyasha needed to hear.

...that he had not done anything else.

She watched him closely, as he shifted uncomfortably away from her, removing his hand from her chest suddenly in realization as though it burned him. He even seemed to lean back, averting his eyes from her gaze.

"...do you know what it is, Kagome?" his voice seemed bitter.

"...I... what?" she was puzzled.

His eyes returned to her, flicking to her in a deep anger that she couldn't understand.

...had she done something wrong?

"...I'm... I'm sorry..."

...it was all she could think to say.

He snorted at her apology. "For what? You didn't do anything. Forget it... Forget all of it."

His voice was so soft, so open and so gentle, Kagome was almost frightened.

He seems so vulnerable...

"Inu..." she reached for him, but he bypassed her attempt to console him, and corrected her clothing considerately for her.

"Come on, Kagome... Let's get out of... here..."

Inuyasha had lifted her up into his arms, steadying her before looking at their surroundings...

And for the first time he noticed, "Where the hell are we?"

Kagome blinked at him, unsure herself, as she stood as near to him as possible.

For some reason, she felt a pressing need to be in his presence...

And he seemed to feel the same, having wrapped one arm loosely around her waist, placing an innocent hand on the jucture of her hip to keep her close.

"...and where the hell is my shirt? And Tessaiga?" Inuyasha looked around on the ground before them, noting that the two were quite obviously very gone.

"Uhm... I don't know," Kagome bit her lip in thought, it not having occurred to her that his sword might be missing. She felt a little bashful she hadn't thought of it before.

"I passed out... when you were fighting... I'm not even sure what happened. All I remember last is that they were going to stab you... which they did," Kagome traced the closing wound with one finger, bringing Inuyasha's attention to it.

"...it looks like they weren't able to do any major damage... though I am not sure what happened after that. Someone hit me and I passed out," she admitted sheepishly, a bit embarrassed she had been knocked out yet again during a fight.

...she seemed to notice a pattern to her uselessness.

"Someone hurt you?!" Inuyasha barked angrily, placing his hands on her shoulders and whirling her around to face him.

"...yeah, but you protected me, Inu."

Still, Inuyasha seemed displeased.

"Where? Where are you hurt?"

Kagome lifted one hand instinctually to the back of her head, searching with her fingers for the injury she knew was present.

Snorting, Inuyasha brushed her fingers aside calmly and began prodding her scalp gingerly for where the blow had taken place.

At the sound of her "Ite!", he knew he had found it.

A nasty lump, and nothing more.

"You're lucky, it's just a knot," Inuyasha grumbled, a sour look still present on his face.

She knew he was blaming himself for it, even though it was pretty much just a scratch.

"Don't worry about it, I'm okay... it's just a bit sore, and it makes me light headed. But you're here, and I know you're going to take care of me," Kagome smiled softly at him, offering him comfort, some semblance of solace and she prayed internally he would accept just this little bit.

His face... it seemed to ease, some of his tension melting away, and he whispered to her ever so quietly.

He's still so unsure of himself...

"I didn't protect you so well before, Kagome... I...I hurt you."

Kagome waved her hand dismissively, her smiling never fading.

"You could have hurt me a lot worse and I know you wouldn't.  And you didn't. Proof's in the pudding. Besides, that's a cat scratch compared to... Buyo?"

Inuyasha squinted at her.

"...Buyo is that vicious?"

Kagome gave him an exasperated look. "No, dummy. Cat scratch! Buyo! Where is Buyo?"

They both gave each other blank stares, and she heard Inuyasha distinctly mutter.

"...shit."

~~~*~~~
Inuyasha's eye twitched in aggravation as he stared at the sight before him.
There, that despisable cat, who made them worry, who made Kagome rush him to search far and wide for him, who made her dizzy as Inuyasha carried her on his back, who had Inuyasha a nervous wreck Kagome might end up in tears after they found his mutilated corpse-as he was sure was Buyo's condition-and him having to comfort her in her loss...
...and there, that damn cat was, a leftover carcass of a fish the cat had obviously gotten in whatever way he could because that damn cat was so fat and so slow, there was no way in all the world that cat could have caught such a prized fish by himself, the very one that was laying next to him as the furball was curled up nice and toasty and warm inside of Inuyasha's haori... which had somehow miraculously made its way all the way near the river he was laying down next to.
Perfectly oblivious to the world, perfectly content to just nap there and wait for his owners to come find him. As Inuyasha was sure he was doing. Just sleeping, waiting for his Mistress Kagome to swoop down and rescue him as she always did.
...that little prick.
And there, there she went, running toward her little angel like the world had ended and began all at the same time.
"BUUUYYYOOOO-CHAN!"
She fell to her knees in a dramatic fashion, lifting the obese animal into her arms and coddling him, placing loud kisses all over his face.
The cat's eyes opened slowly, and he drawled a confused, "Brrroooooooowww?"
Inuyasha was suddenly struck with the impression of kabuki theater.
He could imagine the music playing, ever so sorrowfully in the back of his mind as he watched the two interact.
Kagome, cuddling the cat who laid limp in her arms.
"I" sniff "missed" snort "you" gasp "so" tear "MUCH!"
"I" whimper "was" whine "so" hiccup "WORRIED!"
And out came the downpour, of overdone crying, wails and all as Inuyasha pinned his ears to his head and once more cursed the day he brought her the wretched feline.
"Uh... c'mon, Kagome... let me take you back to that place..."
She turned bright, teary eyes to him in askance.
"Huh?"
He repressed the urge to groan.
"Back to the cave thing... that would make a perfect den for us... it's better than any we found and the heavy snows are going to start soon. We don't have any more time."
"...what-" snooort... "What about E-Edo?"
Inuyasha shook his head.
"I will take care of that once I'm sure you're safe and secure. I can travel there a lot faster than the two of us can together. It will only take me a few days."
She rubbed her nose on his haori sleeve, and Inuyasha ignored it, knowing he was going to need to clean all the clothes anyway.
She had been too weak and dizzy to take care of herself, so he was going to do all the chores for the two of them.
"And... and Testusaiga...?"
"Keh, I'll get that. It'll only take me a half hour. You need rest, now that we found Buyo..."
Kagome missed the sarcasm and testiness in his voice as once again she cuddle the object of her current affection.
"Okay..."
Lifting her up into his arms, he began the trek back to their new home.
At the very least, he was thankful he would no longer have to worry about that one thing.
Even if it did come at a costly price Kagome didn't even know of.
...but Inuyasha just didn't have the heart to tell her what it was...
