A/n: I have every intention of making Kagome bad-ass because I hate the thought of someone having the be the protector of something so powerful being useless. But at this point in time, she really doesn't stand a chance against someone as powerful and awesome as Sesshy. She needs more training to withstand his amazingness. *fangirldom* Someone point out some good Kag/Sess fics to me, please?
Thank KnittingKnots for reviewing this for me. :) And give her a HUUUGE thanks for saving the plot and filling in my holes. Thanks for all the gardening Knitting ^-^
Tora_Tsubasa: Rofl, I found the request ironic since this is Seshsomaru's first debut in my fic. And if you remain the only one to give a suggestion, you shall get your wish.
Midcat: DON'T WISH SUCH TERRIBLE THINGS ON ME. You think I'm bad about dragging things out? Some of the fics I read only update once a year, or once every six months. At least after I come back from a haitus I update multiple times ;p. Gosh woman, you do sound like a raging bundle of hormones. And here I thought *I* was bad! LOL you give me hope! Roflmao. Thanks for the reviews.
Splendent Goddess: Your review made my eyes swirl @@. This is all very true, you gave it more thought than I did LMFAO. And yea, Inuyasha was still nervous to tell Kagome about the whole thing. I mean, it's like. Hi, we're married, but hey, you didn't know right. Well, I married you without asking! LOL ho-kay! I could see it being difficult to bring up, and while he was meaning to, it had only been two weeks, and Inu was procrastinating. :D. Plus I'd be shy to bring thqt up myself like 'ha ha ha you know what I did when I was not in control of myself and you didn't really have a choice but oh well!' amirite? Hehe.
J Luc: Thanks ;3
Soliea0death: Lol yes he's just trying to piss poor Inu off.
CoyKoi: Burst of inspiration, SURPRISE!
He was a flying streak of crismon in the forest before he registered anything else, begging Kami that he was not too late.
He should have gone with her, he should have been there to protect her, he needed to reach her, he had to be there he had to make it he had to he had to he had to...
The wind shifted, and he smelled it.
Searing hot rage boiled inside him, the darkness in the recesses of his mind pushing against its restraints and howling to be released to visit a retribution on the fool who dared touch his mate. It made him go blind, the world darkening in the madness at the thought she had been threatened by him...
Sesshomaru...
He would drag the bastard to hell.
Inuyasha broke through the clearing like an angel of destruction, clenching his claws in his fists so tightly blood leaked from between his fingers as he snarled at his half-brother.
"SESSHOMARU!" he bellowed the name in seething hatred, a vow of pain and suffering to come.
Tears trekked slowly down Kagome's face, trickles of blood lining the gentle curve of her neck as her nude form dangled helplessly in his brother's claws. Terrified eyes pierced him, shredding him to pieces and breaking him.
He could see it there.
Help me...
The belief that he could save her, no matter what.
Her eternal savior.
His youki pressed against the binds of his sanity, the lust to sink into his fury and rip apart his adversary oh-so-tempting. But the need for Kagome's safety overrode that, the fear he might accidentally turn on her too kept him from giving in.
"Release her! NOW!" Inuyasha challenged him, taking a threatening step forward as he placed a hand on Tetsusaiga's hilt in promise.
His brother considered him a moment before smirking at him, calling him on his bluff. "Or what, otouto? It appears you are in no place to make demands. I doubt you're foolish enough to wield ChiChiue's fang in the midst of your ningen mate. One you have not made a blood-bond with nonetheless."
Inuyasha visibly tensed at Seshsomaru's words, puzzlement flitting across Kagome's face as she watched the exchange between the two. She couldn't remember him ever talking about a brother, much less her being a mate. What did that even mean? What was a blood bond? What were all these things they spoke of?
"That's none of yer damn business you asshole! Let her go and we'll settle this!"
Sesshomaru made a mockery of him, though, ignoring that Inuyasha had said anything at all. "And here, can't you smell her confusion? She has no idea what we're talking about. What, did you force yourself on her like the mindless animal you are?"
Kagome twisted in his hand, kicking out at Sesshomaru and grabbing the attention of them both as her face contorted in anger.
"Shut up! I'm with him cause I want to be, because I love him, something I doubt you would ever have the pleasure of experiencing!" Kagome shouted at him to the pair's surprise, placing both her hands on his wrist furiously as she gripped him mercilessly and burned his flesh with all the purification she could muster.
Sesshomaru winced visably, flinging the girl from him headlong into a tree, and Inuyasha barely caught her before she cracked her skull against the bark. The force of the impact to his body left her shaken and breathless, staring at the youkai in horror as he glared at them both in undisguised animosity.
"Bitch, I'll make you both suffer greatly before I take your lives."
In disbelief, she stared openly as he began a strange sort of transformation. She felt Inuyasha pulled her close to his side, barely registering as he dropped the fire-rat haori atop her head and him commanding her to be careful.
She knew she would not be much help without her bow and arrows, feeling foolish for leaving them behind, and backed away from the two as she continually glared at Sesshomaru.
At first, she thought the light was playing tricks on her eyes.
But before her, his face began to elongate, mouth grinning wide and feral as he grew in size. Snowy white fur sprouted across his body, and he became something all together different. Something out of myths and legends, something that could not be possibly be real. But before her, growling and pacing, was a giant inu.
No wonder she could do nothing against him.
He was a daiyoukai.
She felt faint, foolish even that she had yelled at such a being. And even more shocked, she had actually hurt him, as testament to the burnt flesh above his paw.
She watch as Inuyasha barked a sharp and humorless laugh at his brother. "What's a matter, become soft in your old age? Angry a mere human could fuck you up, even just a bit?"
"Silence, hanyou," his brother charged at him headlong, something akin to poison alighting his claws with a deadly green. Kagome's eyes widened at Inuyasha rushed at his elder brother, withdrawing Tetsusaiga from its sheath, stealing her breath away at the sight.
While indeed she had seen him wield it before, it had not been often. It was always remarkable, and a reminder of how strong Inuyasha actually was. It glinted in the moonlight, singing a deadly lullaby of battle as it scraped against the ground quickly before Inuyasha leapt away at his brother, uppercutting the wind in such a manner it appeared he was swinging at nothing.
And yet... and yet, the air itself changed. The wind pulled intself around the sword as if by some unnatural force, wrapping itself around it protectively before redirecting toward Sesshomaru who was in the middle of bringing down a poisonous paw toward Inuyasha.
"KAZE NO KIZU!"
Light shot forth from Tetsusaiga, headed straight at Sesshomaru's torso. Kagome watched in shock at the display, never before having witnessed such a thing. She gazed at Inuyasha in wonder, watching him in this timeless moment as he did everything he could to defend her from his elder brother.
He's fighting for me...
There was no way his brother could have conceivably dodged an attack such as that at such a short range. And yet, somehow...
Quicker than she could blink, he withdrew his paw, still glowing a sickly green, parrying to the right and swiping Inuyasha with a single blow with a resounding crack as she heard him give a sharp shout of surprise and he was sent flying into the trees.
The smell of burnt flesh reached her nose and trepidation gripped her like a vice, stealing her breath as she stood and raced toward where he had landed. "INUYASHA!"
He appeared again from within the forest, wielding his sword and staring at her hard. "I said stay back Kago---"
He was unable to finish his sentence before his brother came at him again, and this time he countered with Tessaiga, knocking Sesshomaru back as his brother snarled. But Kagome still noticed the deep gashes on Inuyasha's torso through his ripped undershirt, the way the flesh sizzled, the putrid smell and the unhealthy purple color his blood had become.
Inuyasha...
She clutched her chest tightly, searching the ground frantically for something, anything she could do to help...
Something...
Something's wrong...
Kagome turned to look at Sesshomaru, the way his mouth was frothing... something...
Then she noticed the small wisps of what appeared to be clouds coming from within his mouth. She recalled Shinsei-baa-chan having told her how some youkai were able to produce poisonous gases from within, transforming their jyaki in deadly ways. That just like any other youki, it could be purified.
And she could tell that Inuyasha hadn't noticed it in his anger, and Kagome knew he would be swallowed up in the poison without knowing better. She knew he just had to be close enough, close enough for Sesshomaru to release the miasma upon him...
She ran at them, hand out, blindingly pulling at that soft light within herself with everything she was worth. Inuyasha was swinging downward, Sesshomaru was leaning back, opening his mouth...
And Kagome intercepted Inuyasha, colliding into him and shielding him from Sesshomaru, wrapping them both in a purifying light as the toxin was poured down unto them both.
Kagome held her breath, hand up and pressing into Inuyasha, eyes closed tightly in terror. She heard him shout her name as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders too tight, but everything was so loud, the whirlwind of air around her, every fiber of her being standing at attention. Had she been an ordinary woman, had she been not a miko and not had the Shikon no Tama and not received training from Shinsei-sama as a result she would have not known how to do what she was doing, and she would have watched the love of her life suffocate in the poison that was being nullified by nothing but her desire to save the one she loved the most.
It was a straight line from the Sacred Jewel to this moment, this moment where for once she did not regret having the cursed thing.
"Ningen!"
A force rammed into her side, blocked only partially by Inuyasha who had turned at the last minute to shield her from it but hadn't done quite enough... Only to keep the blow from being fatal to wounding.
She hit the ground with such force she sobbed, her face scratching against a rock and her ribs breaking from the force. Darkness swam across her vision, agony and pain and pain and pain making the world tilt and she sank into the void of unconciousness.
Sheer and utter panic coursed through Inuyasha as he lifted her into one of his arms and held Tetsusaiga out with the other, warding off his brother as he shook her gently. "Oi, Kagome... wake up!" he muttered to her, circling around the outside of his brother in a defensive manner.
"Well, at least you chose a mate that isn't as useless as she looks, otouto. Though I doubt your whelp will survive. I wasn't going to kill a breeding bitch, such is beneath me... but she didn't know how to stay out of the way, so I had to debilitate her," Sesshomaru spoke factually, as if what he said didn't matter as if it were obvious and yet...
Yet...
"...breeding?" the words sounded like a dream.
"...do you not use your nose you ignorant half-breed? You bitch is carrying your spawn."
A single ear shivered in disbelief.
Something inside Inuyasha snapped.
He was never able to explain it, the red hot anguish that rode him in waves. He willingly stabbed Tetsusaiga into the ground, holding his mate tightly to his chest as he allowed the darkness to overtake him.
"...you'll pay with your life, you fucking piece of scum," he seethed darkly, the last remnants of his sanity subsiding to the burning cold rage that tore into him as a monster possessed.
His brother seemed the least bit surprised by his transformation, unaffected and perhaps even amused at his anger.
"Is that the only way you can win, half-breed? By becoming a bakemono like the youkai carrion that feed on humans? You do not deserve ChiChiue's blood, filth."
Inuyasha didn't care.
He just didn't care.
Someone had threatened his mate, his pregnant mate. He might have lost something so very precious that he didn't even know he had to begin with. Something he had barely time to acknowledge may be ripped away before he could love it...
He branished claws, longer and deadlier as his youkai blood pounded against him, drowning out the world, narrowing it only to the being in his arm and the blood he wanted to shed from the enemy in front of him. A paw came swinging at him and Inuyasha dodged calculatingly to the left, underneath the arm with reflexes faster than his normal hanyou strength and allowed his claws to run underneath the soft tissue of his brother's stomach.
Tendons, muscle, flesh, all of it gave way as a rain of blood spilled to the floor behind him like prophecy. He felt a swirling of jyaki around him, his brother leaping away from him and crouching low to the ground to defend the sensitive area from his otouto, but the damage was done. Inuyasha smirked, licking the blood from his claws as he narrowed considering eyes to his opponent.
He charged.
There was no pain as this faceless, nameless enemy tried to bite him, and he curled his body around the fragile creature in his arms, shielding her and protecting her as jaws came down upon him. There was no pain as teeth dug into his flesh. There was no pain as he grabbed hold of his own wounds, taking the poisoned blood and flinging it into the roof of this mouth that held him, slicing away at the interior without a second thought.
There was no pain as he landed when the mouth released him, words being spoken that he did not heed, did not care for.
There was no feeling as he raced toward his enemy, who was panting from the exertion, with dark red liquid pouring from his mouth and his abdomen. He gave this youkai no chance to recover, no moment in which to strike first. He took his chance, and lashed out, claws running along his shoulder and severing the limb from the whole. The arm fell away and the giant dog demon fell to the ground, disblief naked upon the great face of the daiyoukai.
No pain there, never any pain.
Just injured pride, and hate.
Always hatred.
The daiyoukai said something, something he didn't care about, something he wouldn't remember. The daiyoukai changed again, taking on the form of a wisp of light. It was hovering, for only a moment, before taking to the sky like a shooting star.
All that was left of what had occurred was felled trees, puddles of blood, the smell of corrupted flesh and something else...
...
Hate.
The hate always remained.
But she had never seen what she saw before her.
In the middle of a sea of crimson sat a bakemono holding a tennyo possessively, rocking and whining inhumanly, licking her face tenderly as if trying to get her to awaken from what only seemed to be a deep sleep. Wounds covered his torso, blood stained his hair, the stench of sick and poisoned flesh crawled into her nose and lived there.
She knew she had been right about her feelings.
There sat an Inuyasha she did not know and who did not know her, as his head snapped up and he bared large fangs at her. He turned his body to hide Kagome away from him, growling at her in threat, his body tensing in anticipation.
She stopped all movement and considered her next action, only watching him.
Aqua irises in red eyes, purple streaks across his face and ears facing her all reminded her how much of a hanyou he really was. Sighing softly, she reached inside her kimono shirt, grabbing a sealing charm from within its folds.
She was prepared as he leapt at her, with every intention of harming her, and she flung it on him. The magics slowed him, but did not stop him.
She quickly reached for another when his claws reached for her throat, Kagome still in his arm, and she slapped it against his shoulder.
He froze.
And fell, sealed.
He fought agaisnt the binds for only a moment... and exhaustion won out finally, settling his youki, turquoise fading to a molten gold as recognition seeped into his eyes.
"Shin...sei...baba... Help... Kagome..."
She watched as the light faded in his eyes and he gave into unconsciousness, worry seeping into her old bones for the two of them as she reached down to brush the hair from Kagome's face. Her breathing was settled, but it was then obvious she had been injured by the tensed pain that held her features.
Kneeling down, Shinsei ran a hand along her, searching for the wounds she knew she could not see.
When she reached Kagome's middle, three ribs were misplaced, broken and Shinsei prayed they were not piercing her soft insides in ways that may have been fatal.
Praying to the Kamis, she stood and turned to retrieve help from the men of the village to move her into her hut.
She could only wonder what youkai could have given one as strong as Inuyasha such a fight.
"What happened...child?"

Chapter 35: Retribution
The blood in Inuyasha's veins stopped moving as the world slowed to a crawl. Shinsei had many years she had been in the world. She had seen many things, and done many things, and felt many things and been many places. She knew to heed the feelings of worry she had when Kagome did not appear in the village by midmorning. She knew something had gone wrong when she did not see Inuyasha either to tell her what had occurred. She knew she must go to the place they were at, to see what had happened and offer what aid she could give them.
