Chapter XVIII: The Way Things Are

The entire group as a unit shifted uncomfortably upon Onigumo's presence. Sango, Inuyasha, and Miroku looked back and forth between each other as if trying to come to some silent understanding about him.

But Kagome couldn't rip her eyes away from his. The light, though unmistakable, red that webbed through his irises caused her heart to pound in her head… it made her world to screech to a halt. To say she was upset was the least of it.

She was staring down the barrel of a shotgun that was pointed directly in her face.

And the boy seemed to notice her distress and relished in it, for he just quirked his lips at her and spoke softly, “It was nice to meet you all.” Once again, he brought his eyes to her and scorched her alive with them. Perspiration ran down her temple, as she tried to keep her breathing as steady as possible...

“I'll see you around, Kagome,” her name spoken like an ominious promise of something more...

And with this, he sauntered off.

Inuyasha became tense and just about snarled after the guy, pulling Kagome tight in to his chest protectively, “Who the fuck did that guy think he was? Fabio?”

Sango and Miroku grinned at each other, and then Miroku shrugged. “I don't know. Maybe now everyone thinks Kagome's easy. Besides, it's no big deal… after what our Lady Sango here did to Kimiko…” he paused a moment in time for Sango's deep, appreciative bow as if she had given the world a mighty performance, “…not too many people are willing to mess with her. Though I must say, a lot of people know you exist now, Kagome.”

Kagome huffed a little, leaning her head against Inuyasha's shoulder. He brought his hand up to smooth her hair down over her back, and she leaned back into his touch.

“It doesn't matter if they know I exist. School's gonna be over in about three months now. What's it matter then? This is our last year.”

The others nodded in agreement. Well, except for Sango…

“…er… I'm actually not graduating until next year…” came her sheepish admission.

Three heads turned simultaneously for an explanation. Sango fidgeted with her hands a bit, wringing them together while she spoke, “Since… I originally came from America… while I would be a senior… I was behind on what you guys have already learned last year, so they're holding me back.”

Kagome furrowed her brow and gasped a little, “But they transferred you to my math class not to long ago…” Sango shrugged, “Yeah, but my literacy level isn't too great. Just because I know the math doesn't mean I know the kanji, Kagome…”

She looked slightly apologetic, and the others shrugged. “It doesn't matter. We'll still hang together, you know?” Miroku offered, and that caused Sango to brighten considerably.

“Sure!”

Miroku sidled closer to her ever so slightly, causing her to leer at him suspiciously, "And ever you need a tutor, fair Sango, you merely need ring..."

Sango coughed dryly, peering at him dully for his lame excuse of flirting. Though, she probably could use the extra help... so long as she brought a chasity belt, she thought with an amused grin.

A loud buzzing noise signaled the start of homeroom, and they shifted around a bit to start the day. Sango began heading off to the office, and Inuyasha called after her since all four of them usually walked together. “Oi, Sango! Where you going?” Sango looked back behind her, and lifted up her knuckles to show again.

“Remember, Kimiko?” Inuyasha nodded, not quite clicking it together.

“In school suspension, Inuyasha!”

Inuyasha gaped a little, feeling somewhat dumb. Of course she would have gotten punished some way…

Still, it was damn funny.

“Later then!” Kagome called out, waving after her. The boys did the same.

Sango waved back, smiling, “Catch you guys after school!”

And it was another day at the grind.

“So, tell me why that Onigumo guy creeped you out so bad, Kags,” Inuyasha asked from across the table, absently prodding her foot with his underneath it. Kagome turned her attention toward her milkshake… she knew he wanted to know, but she wished he would have waited until they were at home to talk. Not at Wacdonalds... with Miroku, Sango, and him all waiting for an answer as to why he scared her.

Well, you see, I had a dream with him in it… quite a few dreams, actually. And then he tortured me and raped me, and made me bleed in real life while even though dreams aren't real… they hurt me, and everything about dreams not hurting is bullshit and they're lying… Anyway, so this guy told me that he'd find me and claim me in real life, but I thought he was joking around, but there he was, right in front of me, and I can't get those fucking eyes out of my head…

Kagome lifted her eyes a bit to her friends who were all waiting expectantly for an answer. She felt as if she were an anime character, sweatdropping in reality, and the image of her in a magical school girl outfit popped into her mind.

Her eye twitched.

“Uh… he reminds me… of a guy… I dreamt about... ahem, before,” she spoke quietly, and then promptly began to drink her milkshake so she couldn't possibly say more. She didn't miss the shocked look on Inuyasha's face, though. Luckily the others had, for they were intently looking at her.

No matter… as soon as his look came, it passed.

He's worried...

Inuyasha popped a french fry in his mouth, grumbling slightly. Sango frowned at Kagome, looking somewhat confused.

“So, he just reminds you of a guy you've dreamt of? Why does that bother you?” Kagome couldn't think of how in the world to answer. No words were coming of her mouth, and she could only stare dumbly back at Sango, who was waiting for a response. Lucky for her though… Inuyasha was her saving grace.

“Yeah, she doesn't remember the dreams too well. I just tell her about them, because she talks in her sleep. She could only remember his face when she woke up, not anything he's done at all or anything… So of course it'd unnerve her a bit. Besides, how many times do you see someone from a dream you've had walking around, you know?”

Sango blinked and shrugged at this, turning back to her hamburger, and Miroku grinned. He couldn't resist, “So, it's like he walked straight out of your dreams, eh? Were they such great dreams that you were scared perhaps-FUCK!” he rubbed his head where Sango had reached across the table and thunked him one good. “What was that for?!” he pouted at her, but his boyish charm wasn't working as well as it usually did…

“Don't bother Kagome! And don't be a lecherous asshole about it either, you jerk!” Sango seethed at him, and Inuyasha turned to him and bopped him one as well, “Yeah, you fucker, leave her alone.”

Miroku fell into a quiet sulk after this, only the occasional sipping sound coming from his corner after that.

“So, what are we doing tonight?” Sango asked, looking over to Inuyasha. Usually they made the plans, since Miroku and Kagome generally cared less… Correction, Kagome couldn't care less and Miroku always wanted to go to strip clubs. That left the deciding to Inuyasha and Sango.

Inuyasha looked up at her, and then over to Kagome who sat next to her… Kagome slowly shook her head and then turned her attention back down to milkshake.

“…nothing,” Inuyasha said flatly, chewing on another hapless fry.

“What do you mean? C'mon, it's Saturday! We have tomorrow off! Let's live a little, you know? We never do anything risky...” Sango trailed off when Inuyasha shot her a dirty look.

“And it's going to stay that way,” he said simply. Sango stammered a bit, before glowering at him, “I didn't mean to go base jumping Inuyasha. I just meant go out and have fun. Be a little risqué… you know what I mean? Go to a club, do something kids our age do…”

Inuyasha scowled back at her, and then began to gather his things up. “Look, maybe one day. But Kagome isn't feeling well, and I promise I'd take her home. So if you wanna go be wild for tonight, do it with Miroku. But I'm going home with Kags…” He pulled his bag up on to his shoulder and offered a hand to Kagome as he stood.

Kagome smiled up at him softly, and took his hand. She grabbed her satchel and followed him out, leaving Miroku and Sango staring after them speechless.

“Somehow I get the impression this is a little more to do with wanting to be wild…” Miroku stated aimlessly, feeling as confused as Sango. She shook her head, “I've gotten the impression that this has a lot more to do than with what we think for a long time…”

Miroku just shook his head, unable to find an answer to her, and Sango could only sigh in wonderment...

If they didn't want to say, they didn't want to say. But Sango still couldn't help but feel a little hurt at the fact they were hiding something from them, despite the fact they were suppose to all be friends…

Kagome sighed, sitting on the bed and looking up at Inuyasha. “…I'm sorry. You could have gone out if you wanted to…” she spoke softly, somehow feeling at fault for everything… Though nothing was wrong, it seemed as if everything was horribly out of place and she was to blame for absolutely all of it. She watched as Inuyasha stopped pacing along the floor, rubbing his eyes and turning to look at her… he seemed so old sometimes…

...so tired, so worn out…

“It wasn't the fact that I wanted to go, Kagome. I told you, I'd never leave you behind. And I mean it. I have no reason to leave you… just understand that. Besides, we can go out any other night… you know that. Tonight is just not a good night for either of us, okay?”

Inuyasha walked over to her, kneeling in front of her. Kagome bit her lip slightly, reaching out for him to wrap her arms around him and brought his head to her chest… he returned the favor, wrapping his arms around her waist and stayed nestled there… as if that was all he could ever have desired.

“Okay…” she spoke so softly, almost dejectedly...

Pain, and shame rising up inside of her…

She was taking blame for something that wasn't her fault again. But she couldn't help it. It helped her stay down. It helped her remind herself what she needed to do to stay a good person…

I don't deserve… I'm not… a good person…

Kagome laid her cheek against Inuyasha's crown, chewing on her lip slightly and allowing her eyes to slide close. She was so lucky to have him… she couldn't deny that.

And when he began to tug off her clothes, silently asking if he could take her… she was more willing to comply.

Cause even though she felt she might not deserve him, he had decided to take her. And she realized that was all that really mattered…

That you couldn't decide who you fall in love with, no matter the circumstance, and no matter who they were. Love was just something that happened, and you can't stop that anymore than you can stop lightning in its path… or make the wind change directions on a whim… or turn back time.

It just didn't happen.

And she was strangely okay with that…
