A small sweet icy snowflake trickled from the sky and landed on the bridge of Kagome Higurashi's nose. Her eyes twitched at the frosty feeling ran through her body.
`How could some one get killed in something as peace as snow?' Kagome sighed to herself.
3 years ago today Kagome had lost her father in a brutal snow storm, which covered the northern part of Japan. She lived deep with in the mountains and neighbours where in miles range.
Most people would have mourned the lost of their father…. But Kagome… was thrilled that it happened.
She would never admit it but the day she heard her father pronounced dead she almost ran out of the hospital screaming in joy. The past week before the storm Kagome has been beaten harshly. Bruises lined the 12-year-olds arms because of her own father's rage.
She would always fight back but never win. Her father's power controlled her. But now she didn't have to worry about anybody over powering her. She was 15 living with her grampa, mother and her little brother Sota at the Higurashi shrine. They cared for the 1000-year shrine.
She had always hated living there though… there was no one to play with when she was young and frozen glaciers spanned miles around there home. Her mother never trusted her enough to set out without the guidance of some one with her. Snow storms hit with out warming and their sadilight was often crashing making communication impossible. When incidents like that happened she was trusted to watch the sky with appealing eyes.
She stared out into the icing barren lands before her and just sat wondering on her frozen patio….
"I am ever going to do anything worth while in life…?" She asked her self quietly and sighed. Her ebony tress was a little past her shoulder with a curve on the end. She was a regular Asian girl, as you would put it… her cerulean eyes were the only thing unique about her. Her family line traced back 3 generation never had any trace of blue in their eyes. So why did she have them?
She didn't give a damn though… it didn't make a difference.
"Kagome?" Her mom mentioned softly.
"Oh... umm… yes?" Kagome replied quickly as her mother walked out of the house into the barren landscape.
"Do you think you could go clean out the barrels outside of the south east temple. I think the wolves have been getting into them?" Mrs. Higurashi asked tenderly to her child. Her mother was always kind and she didn't think she could ever get mad at her. She remembered the pain and struggle they went through when their father was still alive. She wanted to prove to Kagome that everything was going to be all right.
In the truth it was…all right… if living life ordinary was all right to you… Kagome was going to a normal Japanese school with normal friends. She wasn't popular just normal and her life ever since her father died WAS NORMAL. There wasn't a scratch of excitement in the air as Kagome stood up.
"Yes mom…" Kagome agreed walking off the old shrine. She was only wearing thin socks that were already drenched form the light moist packing snow but Kagome's feet had become numb long ago and the bitter frost couldn't be felt.
Her track left clear dents in the snow as the edge of the heals in each one was dragged. It made her foot look unnaturally long and thin. Her feet where thin. That's the way her whole family was… thin tall and beautiful… Well everyone except her. To herself she was the ugly duckling. Many people found her pretty but she just didn't find one portion of herself `pretty'. She found herself and oddball amongst many generations of perfect humans including her mother.
The southeast shrine was the one built around the Goshinku. The only tree which had survived the cold… and 100 years of it. The tree was worshiped by many travelers. Many people to visit and wish upon it. There had been a legend so long ago about the tree…
It was Kagome favorite and she knew if better than anyone else saying she had heard it about nine billion times from her mother when she was still young.
`Long ago about 100 year there was a boy. He lived in the tundra of northern Japan. He was about 12 with long flowing sliver and small dog-ears on top of his head. He didn't always live in the tundra but ever since his mother died he was band form the town forcing him to move elsewhere. They villagers forced him to leave because of his demon blood. His father was a great demon who ruled that land and his mother a gentle villager who was only an innocent victim to love. His blood contained both demon and human making him a hanyou. At first he was weak and became ill quickly to the snow. He fell into a deep sleep until a witch who lived in the Goshinku found him. She taught him the ways of the snow and how he could live with in the drifts of it… Though soon after the witch parished in the tree living a mark where they say you can wish and get what you want if you give to her. Heading the wise words of the witch the hanyou would bury deep hole within the snowdrifts and sleep in them during the night. Only to awaking to hunt during the day. A miko with a strange magical jewel found him and disproved his way only to but him to sleep for 100 year to awake to life again where demons where not living by humans side anymore. Some say that if you look long enough you'll be able to find that hanyou drifting in the snow.'
Yea right you were going to see him! There had been account where people would claim they saw him but Kagome had lived here all her life and never seen a flash of ear of silver in the snow! NEVER! What was the chance that he was true from some people who came to visit for a week and SAY they saw him…?
She had learned how to face it… The boy in the snowdrifts wasn't real.
She kicked the snow with her numb feet staring at the still budded Goshinku. Scientist had even come to study why the tree had leaves in the cold mountain likes these. It was a forensic miracle. The miracle where she lived…
Didn't effect her… didn't change her life from normal… so what was the point of it being there.
She walked over the three wooden barrels painted crimson.
"Look at this mess why do what have to keep the molasses out here?!" Fumed Kagome walking over the other side to fetch the broom. She stared off into the distance. A storm was coming up fast.
She gulped in fear of what it might do to the shrines tonight. Snow was tossed into the air as she could see many snow drifts in the distance.
Wait- -!
What was that?!
She eyed the distance there was something out there!
She shook her head ridiculously. What was she thinking!? It's not like it was that boy in the legend. She concentrated in the distance again to see something there.
`It's probably a animal or, or… something like that yea!' She through desperately to herself, trying to wipe all thoughts off the boy out of her mind.
She focused in one more and noticed something. It wasn't a wolf or white rabbit it was bigger. It's close where strangled coloured.. . it was a human.
She thought frantically with this storm coming up that person could suffer the same fate as her father.
She dropped the brown was holding and ran through the snow in a desperate scamper.
"HEY! WAIT! YOU!" She called out to the person in the distance. It's head immediately perked up looking up and around from where the sound was coming from. They must have had amazing hearing or something to have heard Kagome's weak little voice.
As Kagome neared and continued to call out the person in the distance it finally caught her image.
She stopped dead in her tracts with its icy glare. She could now clearly see its features. To be more exact his feature.
The boy's hair was long and silver almost camouflaging with the snow and his kimono a creamy pastel. The boy looked about Kagome's age. His face was tan even though he'd looked like he lived here his whole life as well. But the most distinguishing features was his ears. Two little white short hared dog-ears, which sat on top of his head.
"HEY! THERE'S A STORM COMING! YOU NEED TO GET INSIDE!" Kagome hallowed to him as he kept his eyes firmly locked on her. She took a run forward the boy startled, shifted back in worry.
"YOU CAN COME WITH MY HOUSE IS JUST OVER THERE!" She yelled turning her head to the building a few meters behind her then she back at the nothingness in front of her.
The boy was gone…
Vanished…
WA BAM!
Disappeared…
But question arose in Kagome's mind….
Was this the boy in the legends… and what was he doing in the snow like that…?
"SIS!" Sota, Kagome's baby brother called from the southeast shrine. Kagome whipped her head back at the sound not understanding the words.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING OUT ARE?!" He yelled to her. Unfortunately she couldn't hear him.
"WHAT!?" She bellowed back racing to the shrine. She needed to get inside. The cold must be getting at her.
"I SAID WHAT ARE YOU DOING OUT THERE!?" He yelled closing his eyes not aware of Kagome racing up to him.
"Yea I heard you!" She said slapping her hand over his mouth.
"MHMMIGILG" he tried to pull his sisters arm away. He clearly saw she was gleaming with pride. She finally removed her hand.
"Keep quiet! Mom will think I was out in the storm if she hears you yelling like that!" Kagome hushed.
"But can you answer my question PLEASE?!" Sota insisted in a raspy whisper.
"You'll think I'm crazy but I think I just saw this boy out in the snow!" Kagome exclaimed in excitement.
"Yea… you're crazy…" Sota rolled his eyes turning around to walk back.
"NO REALLY! He was there! I'm not lying!" Kagome replied frantically.
"Then where's your mysterious snow boy now?" Smirked Sota in a rude tone.
"I don't know…. He just disappeared after I looked back…" Kagome mumbled losing herself in thought.
"Kagome what's going on in that head!?" Sota questioned in disbelief.
"You never use to believe in men in the snow before! You never even believed in `making of a snow man'. So why the sudden change? Aren't you supposed to be getting mature not childish?" Sota inquired.
"Shutup! I just swear… I saw him…" Kagome explained drifting off into a glare in the deep heavens.
"Anyway why are you here… don't you have choir yourself?" Kagome propped snapping herself back into life.
"Uh… I…I finished them! Plus I wanted to make sure you weren't doing anything stupid!" Sota laughed trying not to let the truth bleed through. Kagome gave a dull unpleased look.
"You were trying to get me in trouble…" She drawled dryly.
"Uh… yea?"
"TWIRP GET BACK HERE!" Kagome exclaimed chasing her younger brother through the snow-covered yard…
