Kagome sat down across the table from InuYasha. It had taken about an hour to make dinner, and in the meantime Shippou had shown his coach around the house. As a matter of fact, she'd been able to hear her son begging the older man to play some video games with him for a while after dinner. He'd approved of it with her, and it was set. After dinner, she was going to drive InuYasha to his car, then turn back home as InuYasha got his things to stay the night with Shippou at their place.
She had piled their dinner on their plates and called up to them that dinner was ready. Then laughed as she immediately heard them pounding around on the floor and soon down the stairs, even considering the fact that Shippou's room was at the other end of the long hall. 'Men and their stomachs... Always trust them to be up and moving the second they catch wind of food.' She thought incredilously. Then they came bursting into the kitchen, Shippou leading the way and jumping into the closest seat as InuYasha quickly did the same.
She was just about to ask InuYasha some questions about where he worked(the boys soccer team was a community job that went without pay that he'd done for the past few years) when the doorbell rang. InuYasha and Shippou, who were already busy stuffing their faces, paused and looked up as a frown crossed her lips briefly. She pushed her chair back and walked into the living room. "I wonder who that could be? We don't normally have visitors during dinner..." She trailed off curiously, making her way towards the door.
She opened the door to see her ex-honey's mother standing there, holding a little girl's hand and wearing possibly the worst clothes she'd ever seen. And she was crying. Kagome's eyes widened and she grabbed the woman's shoulder and dragged the two of them inside, closing the door after tossing a quick glance about the neighborhood for any potential danger. It was still a bright and sunny normal day. The two had taken off their shoes and were watching her, awaiting orders it seemed. "Come on, into the kitchen. Shippou, his guest, and I were just sitting down to dinner. You two look famished." She said, ushering them towards the back of the house where the boys were waiting for her return.
"Oh, we-we don't mean to be a bother Kagome!" She started and Kagome noticed that she was shivering against the hand she'd placed on the older woman's shoulder. "Nonsense. You're no burden to me! You're perfectly welcome here anytime you want to be! You should know that. It's only you're son that I have the problem with. Now come on. Dinner's getting cold." She said, finally pushing the female kitsune youkai into the kitchen. She heard InuYasha's brief growl before he started sniffing and frowned as she walked back into the room, proceeding to dish up a plate for both of their visitors. She put them on the table next to each other and the woman sat with the young girl that she didn't recognize on her lap.
"So... Who are you?" Shippou asked not-too-politely. "Shippou! What have I told you about being polite too guests?!?!" She questioned, embarassed that he was all but telling the woman that she couldn't teach her son his manners. She just smiled though as the girl kept stuffing her face with the food in front of her. "Oh. Please. It's perfectly fine. I've been spoken too by ruder people before. And anyways, he gets it from his father. I swear, that man wouldn't know manners if they bit him on the nose!" She said, the smile still on her face as she began eating. Just then, the girl spoke, her mouth still full of spaghetti noodles.
"This is the best Spaghetti I've ever had, Miss Kagome!!!" The girl beamed up at her as a light blush stained her cheekbones. "Why, thank you dear. That's the nicest thing that someone has told me." She replied. Just then, InuYasha cleared his throat to get her attention. Her head whipped to him. "She's not lying. It is really good. It probably rivals my mother's cooking." He said, a light blush on his own cheeks as hers turned scarlet. She smiled and nodded her head lightly in thanks.
"Well, Shippou, I am your grandmother, though I understand entirely if your mother has not told you about me." She told Shippou. "You're my grandma? So... Who's she?" He questioned, pointing to the young girl, who looked about his age, that was once again stuffing her face as fast as she could while everyone around her ate at a casual pace inbetween all of the questions. Other than InuYasha, who simply ate and watched the drama, grunting at times when he understood something.
"She is, in a way, your half-sister. She is your father and another woman's daughter. Her name is Makie. Say hello, Makie." She looked down at the girl, who was still eating, barely being able to chew, she had so much in her mouth. "On second thought, nevermind." She muttered. "Slow down honey, or you'll get a stomach ache. Son't want that now, so we?" She said, placing some food in her own mouth to chew. Makie shook her head, mouth still full and chewing. "So, who's daughter is she. Did the girl go to college with us?" Kagome asked with twisting her fork to catch some spaghetti noodles before lifting it to her mouth and chewing thoughtfully.
"No. Her name is Samora. She's older than you by... Six year, I think. Wow. I never thought about that..." She frowned disappointedly. "Six years?!?! That makes her four years older than he is! I mean, it's not surprising that none of the women our age that went to college with us, they were all disgusted when he left me after finding out... Well, you know... But still!!! Four years?!?! Don't you think that's a bit much?!" She questioned incredilously with her eyebrows raised. "Yes, well, as I said. I never thought of that. Anyhow, Makie and I need a place to stay. My mates not..." She coughed, a panicked look coming across Makie's face as she raised pleading eyes to Kagome. "Feeling well." She finished with an undertone. Kagome knew instantly that she would be asking later about the issues between the woman and her mate.
"So! Who is this charming young man? I thought you said that you were having dinner with one of Shippou's friends, not your own..." She switched the conversation to InuYasha, causing her to pout for a moment before a bright smile lit her face. "He is Shippou's friend, and also his guest. He's the boy's' community soccer team coach. How long have you been doing that? I meant to ask you when we first sat down to dinner, but..." She tossed her hand towards the two girls who were now intently foccused on him. He smiled and swallowed what he was chewing. "Well... I've been the coach for the past... Four years, I think? It was a job I started because I love kids so much. I just, for some reason, don't seem to get along with girls the same as boys." He commented, smiling and joking around. Shippou snorted.
"Yeah. Girls. You shoulda seen him the first time he met mommy. When we got home, she was muttering about 'rude, arrogant, bumbling idiots'," He said, imitating a high-pitched voice at the end. "But, she's gradually started accepting him more and more. I guess it's 'cause he's started being nicer to her. And the boys on the team. Now, he's the only adult that she talks to at the games. Probably because none of the other moms and dads there know what's going on either. There's this one team that we are absolutely against, but their coach likes mommy. It's really gross. And he's really mean. I don't like him. InuYasha's a lot better!" Shippou conversed with the table.
They fell into silence after that, a blushing Kagome sitting across from an equally blushing InuYasha as the elder woman looked back and forth between the unknowing lovebirds, formulating a plan to get them together in her mind. After all, she wanted to see Shippou happy. He was her grandson, no matter if she hadn't met him before tonight. As she'd earlier stated, she completely understood. Under the circumstances, it was only too be expected. Speaking of her grandchildren, both were just sitting there, eating, comepletely oblivious to everything going on around them. Oblivious to the love and tension that they would be getting used to soon.
