Somewhere Out There
Chapter 2: You and I Both
June 14 2004

~Some days are better, they're better than others
Can't run forever you're pushing me under
What a way to live my life
I'm hiding from the battles I don't want to fight
What I've become~

The last two weeks were the most boring weeks ever. Inuyasha finally found a decent team for next years football team. He wanted to work on some of there training before he moved to college, wherever that would be. He spent most of the past two weeks at Miroku's, though he didn't think his mother, or his father, noticed. His father was probably 'away on business' anyway, which is code for 'Sleeping with his secratary'.

"Mum!!!" Inuyasha threw his keys on the table and looked at the package of mail sitting on the counter. He picked up the packages filled with acceptance letters to colleges.

Inuyasha flopped down on the couch and shifted through the different letters. He didn't want to stay in New Jersey, but he didn't want to go too far away. Maybe he would go with Miroku, they had been best friends forever, it would just make sense to go to college together too. He looked at the letter from Ithaca and noted that they did indeed have psychology as a major. He sighed and threw the papers back on the counter.

"Mum?" he asked. He had seen John McKay's truck outside, so he knew she was home. He often thought his mom was a slut, though he didn't care. His mother was nice to him, and nice to most people she came across, so he didn't mind that John McKay, or Jameson Roze and sometimes-even Nathan Puzzle, were almost always at the house.

"If you come by tomorrow, I'll fix that right up for you and Nancy."

"All right. Thanks Nahori. Hey Inuyasha."

"Good Bye Jonathan." Inuyasha watched the man leave his house. He had blonde hair that bounced rays of light in every which direction, and he was very tall, and very muscular.

"Hey sweetie. How was your last day of school?" Inuyasha's mother kissed him on the cheek and walked past him toward the kitchen.

"Fine."

"Your father will be home Sunday."

"Oh, great." Inuyasha's sarcasm was poorly masked.

"Inuyasha." his mother reprimanded. His mother was one of the sweetest, most beautiful women. She had midnight black hair, just the same as his, with flecks of gray that almost seemed to be highlights. Her deep sapphire eyes sparkled with mischief and laughter, and her voice was so kind, it could calm a raging sea.

"Sorry Mum." he replied dully. "I'm going to the post office, I want to mail out this letter to Ithaca before mail goes out at five."

"All right. But I'm making lamb, be home for dinner tonight please."

"No problem." Inuyasha kissed his mother on the forehead and walked to the living room grabbing his keys and his package from Ithaca.

"Oh and Inuyasha,"

"Hai mom?"

"Could you stop by the train station and pick up Sesshomaru? Love you sweetie!" Inuyasha sighed heavily. He knew that wasn't a question, what his mother was actually saying was 'Go pick up your brother or else'. If he even thought about arguing he'd be grounded for a month (of course he would have talked his way out of it by tomorrow afternoon).

He didn't mind his brother, but he liked him a lot better when he was in Chicago. Sesshomaru was studying to be a film critic. He hated acting, but loved the stage and movies, so he figured a critic was the next best thing. Inuyasha knew he would be coming back for the summer; he just didn't want it to be so soon.

Inuyasha stopped in front of the post office and ran in, mailing his letter and saying a brief hello to Christophe who worked at the window. He hopped back into his jet black Saab and headed toward the train station.

"Hello dear brother!" Sesshomaru hugged his little brother with a slight squeeze.

"Hey Sess." he replied dully.

"So, have you decided where to go to college? If you decide soon we can take a road trip to the college of your choice. Or you can procrastinate and then -" Oh great, here we go again.

Kagome ran down the street, on her usual route to work. She had two jobs, one on the weekend working at her father's bar/club and one at Pub Jameson, where she was a waitress. Right now, she was running past the train station, desperate to get to work by three o'clock. She ran faster as she glanced at her watch and realized she had five minutes. Too distressed to notice she ran into a tall silver-haired boy. She stopped to make sure he was all right, only to glance up and see piercing violet eyes.

"I am so sorry. Are you okay?" she asked.

"Hai. I am fine. Are you all right Miss?" he asked sweetly.

"Hai. It's Kagome by the way." she offered.

"Sesshomaru." he replied.

"Nice to meet you Sesshomaru." her eyes smiled as her lips followed her happiness into a small curve.

"Hey Sess, I got the car." Inuyasha walked up to his brother, noticing the girl beside his brother he scowled . . . "You!" he growled.

"Ugh." was her only response as she turned back to Sesshomaru. "I am sorry I have to go Sesshomaru, it was lovely to have met you." she turned and continued on her travel to work.

"Miss Kagome," she turned her head around to listen to him, "Could I maybe call you sometime?"

"Sure. Come by 'Dramatic Voltage' Saturday. I got to run! Bye!" she disappeared around the corner.

Soon she came upon Pub Jameson and ran in, panting loudly as she mumbled 'hello' to Katie, her co-worker.

"Kagome," Tsubasa looked at the clock.

"I am sorry Tsubasa. I ran as fast as I could. I had to finish a test after school and then I ran into a boy, literally, at the train station and I stopped to make sure he was okay and I am really sorry." she finished, exhaling deeply.

"Just be glad that James isn't here." she smiled knowingly at Kagome, "So, was the boy from the train station cute?"

"Cute enough to make me ten minutes late." Kagome smiled back and walked into the kitchen to grab an apron and prepare for the dinner crowd.

"I still can't believe you think that wench is hot!" Inuyasha complained angrily from the drivers seat. "I mean, she's a stuck-up, thinks she knows everything, stupid, little wench! And you want to call her. The thought alone makes me shudder. Kami."

"Are you through complaining yet? I wasn't aware that you had any say in who I ask out." Sesshomaru replied coolly, gazing in front of him at the line of traffic.

"No, I am not through complaining. That is Kagome Higarashi. She is like," he searched for a word that could describe her, "annoying." was the best he could find.

Sesshomaru sighed and rolled his eyes casually, "Whatever." he finally looked to his brother, "Now, which college did you want to go to?"

"Ithaca."

"Great, I'll schedule an appointment for a tour of the campus. Maybe they'll have an open house soon. I bet mother would know. I'll ask when we get home. Are you going to slow down any time soon? It's only thirty-five through here, and you must be doing fifty. Oh don't roll your eyes at me." Inuyasha gripped the steering wheel as tight as he could, his knuckles turning white from the action. "How is Mom? Have you heard from Father?"

"Hai, hai. He'll be home Sunday. Mom's good -"

"Well." Sesshomaru corrected.

"'Well' what?" Inuyasha asked.

"Mom is 'well' not 'good'."

"Whatever." Inuyasha came to a stop at a red light. "Mother is well," Inuyasha said in a snooty accent.

"Fine. I will not try to force you to speak like a civilized person." Sesshomaru countered.

"Are you going to harp on me all summer?"

"Only if you continue to be so predictable."

"What is that suppose to mean?" Inuyasha asked, speeding up to pass an old man in a Buick.

"Every summer, you never change. It's always about you isn't it?"

"I am not selfish."

"I didn't say you were. I said it was always about you. You filled in the rest."

"Man you are annoying." Inuyasha parked the car in front of the house and turned off the engine.

"Is Kikyou pr-"

"No." Inuyasha answered before Sesshomaru could finish the question.

"Well, I hope that this little scare will cause you to be more cautious." Sesshomaru opened the car door and proceeded to get out.

"Are you kidding?" Inuyasha followed his actions. "We aren't going to stop fucking just cause she almost got pregnant. You must be out of your mind." Inuyasha grabbed Sesshomaru's suitcase and began lugging it in to the house.

Sesshomaru sighed heavily as he watched his brother easily lift both suitcases in one hand to open the door. His demon blood was strong, not that he knew he was a demon. In time, he would find out. In the mean time, he had to be more cautious, he would only mate with someone when it was sacred, and until then he technically could sleep around as much as he wanted; but, one wrong move, and the demon blood that was trying to be concealed could be unleashed and ruin everything. He still isn't mature enough to understand.

Kagome walked in to her room, tired and hungry. It had been a long night, it was now almost one thirty, she was just glad she didn't have school any more. She changed into an oversized sweater and sweat pants before flopping down on her bed and trying to sleep.

Her thoughts were crowded, which prohibited her from finding a comfortable sleep. Thoughts of college, and pictures of the cute boy from the train station ran through her mind. How did that self-absorbed, arrogant baka know Sesshomaru? She thought. They couldn't be related. Could they? Besides the hair, they do look slightly similar. Nah. Maybe they're half-brothers, or step, but not full brothers. There is no chance. Thinking of Inuyasha being brothers to Sesshomaru, caused her brain to have a chain reaction. Her mind began to cloud with thoughts of her own brother. Souta. I could have saved you. I could. I wasn't strong enough. I could . . . I couldn't protect you when you needed me.

"Kagome?" a soft knock on her door, and then it opening to allow a small ray of light from the hallway, caused Kagome to wipe at the tears that had been falling.

"Hai?" she asked, her voice shaky.

"Kagome, what's wrong?" her father sat on the edge of her bed and she sat up.

"I couldn't . . . I couldn't save him Daddy. He needed me and I couldn't save him." Kagome allowed herself to cry on her father's shoulder.

"Who? Who couldn't you save?"

"S . . . Souta." a fresh burst of tears escaped and her nearly silent sobs racked her small form.

"Souta? You couldn't help it Kagome. You were only eight years old. What would you have done? It isn't your fault at all." he hugged her closer, rocking back and forth, trying to comfort his daughter.

"But Daddy," she began, trying to calm her shaking voice, "I should have been there, watching him, protecting him. If I hadn't told him to play outside, he wouldn't have ridden his bike, he wouldn't have been in the street, he wouldn't have gotten hit by that truck, he would be alive!"

"Shh . . . Kagome, there is a reason your brother left us, so early. But the reason was not you. It is not your fault. The spiritual beings know what they are doing Kagome, they have a reason for the things they do, reasons we humans can't understand. Don't you blame yourself, not for one second. You hear me." Kagome nodded. "You hear me?" he repeated.

"Yes." she said in a strong voice that deceived her.

"Get some sleep, please Kagome. Don't let these thoughts torture you. It was not, and will never be, your fault." Kagome nodded, but didn't close her eyes. She stared blankly at a poster she had of 'Sean' from 'Smile Empty Soul'.

"There, there. Get some sleep."

"Hey Baby." Inuyasha wrapped his arms protectively around the girl in front of him.

"Hello Inuyasha." her reply was cold, but with a slight hint of sweetness hidden deep within . . . very deep within.

"Did you get next weekend off work?" Inuyasha asked eagerly.

"Hai, I did."

"You could be a little happier Kikyou. After all, this means we get to spend a whole weekend together." he leaned down and whispered in her ear . . . "Alone." his warm breath on her ear, caused her to involuntarily shiver, silently succumbing to his every demand.

"I'll meet you at the Library at seven next Friday night. If my parents see your car anywhere near my house, we'll both be dead." Kikyou pulled away from Inuyasha, giving him a quick peck on the cheek. "Only, you will also be a dead woman." the smallest hint of a smile graced her lips and she walked briskly away.

Inuyasha sighed deeply. He was pretty sure he didn't love Kikyou, but he wasn't positive he didn't have strong feelings. He just wished she was a little nicer. She was far too cold and distant, she was a lot like Sesshomaru. Inuyasha shuddered slightly. I don't want to be thinking about her being Sesshomaru.

Inuyasha got into his jet black Saab and drove home. Ever since Kikyou had given her family the scare that she was pregnant, Inuyasha wasn't allowed anywhere near her, or her family. That didn't stop them of course, it just made each other seem that much more tempting.

"Inuyasha. Glad you are home." Inuyasha hadn't realized that he was already parked in front of his house, his thoughts had been running away with him again. He stepped out of the car to stand next to his mother.

"Hey Mom."

"I have something I need to tell you. I want you to know before you and Sesshomaru go on your road trip Monday." she said, keeping an air of mystery.

"Okay . . . what is it?"

"Come inside. I have a lot to tell you."

~And now its going gray
All the lines are blurring and decayed
I can't recall exactly who's to blame
Anymore.
Is it me or is it you? Something isn't right
Of all the things that we could do, we just want to fight
Someday I will find the courage to embrace you
Someday I will find the strength to erase you~

Hey me again! ^-^ I am not sure I like the lyrics thing. . . it worked better when I had the story planned out in my mind, and now that I am actually getting it out, I like how the story is going better, but the lyrics don't make much sense. I could make my chapters longer (though the next one will be) to match better with the lyrics, but that wouldn't be any fun ^_^
Well, I love you guys thanks for reading! Bye!
So these lyrics are from Smile Empty Soul (have I mentioned I love those guys haha) and the song is "Eraser" Hope you're liking this story.
