Somewhere Out There6: In Times of Turbulence

         ~*This distance
         This dissolution
Like linked to memories while falling
         Sleep brings relief
And the hope of a new day
Waking the misery of being without you*~

Kagome ran home, not stopping at any point, through the club doors and up to her room. Her parents were already asleep, so they didn't notice her hurried entrance. She pulled her favorite stuffed animal to her chest and hugged it while crying her eyes out. She wasn't sure if she was crying because he knew, or crying because she couldn't save Kikyou. Grant it, no one really liked Kikyou, she was stuck up and her minions would kill you if you dared to make eye contact; but no one wanted her dead. Kagome thought of the events of that night . . . not voluntarily, but she couldn't think of anything else.

It had been a chilly evening and Kagome had taken to driving. She would usually walk everywhere; even on the longer more deserted roads. Driving down the road, in her Fathers station wagon, she began singing half-heartedly to the songs on the radio. Her normal station was playing commercials so she was listening to a popular 'pop' station and surprisingly knew most of the songs that came on. She heard the sound of screeching metal and a loud horn blaring in the distance. Kagome drove a little slower, not wanting to get involved in a high speed chase, or shootout or something. Coming upon the accident she saw a tractor-trailer tipped over on its side. Kagome stopped the car on the side of the road and got out. She ran up to the truck and could see that a man was crawling out of it.

"Are you okay Sir?" she asked, not wanting to get to close.

"I think. My leg . . . but them." he pointed to another car, almost literally, wrapped around a tree. Kagome gasped as she recognized the car. She ran over to the Jeep and saw Inuyasha's head sticking out of the window. Kagome pulled him out by his shoulders, with much difficulty. She tapped his cheek lightly saying things like 'wake up.' His eyes rolled open and she sighed with relief. Then she smelled gas, she freaked out and pulled Inuyasha further away from the car. Hiding behind a tree she heard the car explode. Feeling the heat of the flames scared her half to death and she ran to her car to get her cell phone (dialing 911).

"Hi, okay umm there was an accident on route 63. There were two cars involved, two people, umm a tractor and jeep. I was driving and I came upon the accident. My name? . . . please hurry." Kagome hung up the phone, not knowing why she didn't give the lady her name. She quickly ran over to Inuyasha, double checking his vitals, when he was breathing okay she ran back to the truck driver, who was doing much better. Finally she ran over to her car and continued her drive home. A few minutes down the road she saw an ambulance, fire truck, and a police officer all drive toward the accident. She smiled to herself and drove home safely.
Flashback~

& nbsp; Kagome replayed the events, wondering why she didn't double-check the car for another person. She realized she was wrapped up in the confusion, and scared by it all. "That isn't good enough." She said out loud to herself. I should have checked. If she was alive today . . . I still can't get rid of this guilt.

&nbs p;   Inuyasha walked home, thinking about what Kagome had said. "Did she really save me?" Inuyasha looked up to the sky, as though the answer would fall out of the air. "Feh. Why would she lie about it?" he questioned. His feet led him home, without much consent from him. He opened the door and walked up to his room. He heard Sesshomaru's voice talking to someone.

"What is wrong? Have you been crying?" he asked. Inuyasha couldn't hear a response. "Do you want me to come over?" he must be on the phone. "Okay, well if you want to talk to me Kagome. . . I'm here. Bye." Sesshomaru hung up the phone and Inuyasha knocked on his door.

         "Enter." Sesshomaru called.

"Hey." Inuyasha sat down on Sesshomarus bed and tossed his throw pillow in the air before catching it.

"Did you come in here for a purpose?" Sesshomaru had a faint smile on his face and Inuyasha shook his head.

"Why is the wench so upset?" he asked, feigning interest.

"Do not call her that. And she wont tell me." he answered.

         "Oh."

A long silence followed this before Sesshomaru broke it; "Are you upset too?" he wondered.

         "No" he blurted " . . . I guess." he admitted.

         "About?"

"I found out who saved my life. I also found out that they are beating themselves up over the death of Kikyou, when it's my fault." Inuyasha explained, looking Sesshomaru in the eyes. He knew what he was going to ask, but didn't want to tell him.

"You have no reason to beat yourself up over Kikyou's tragic departure. Neither does your rescuer. Who was your savior by the way?"

"I don't think its important." Inuyasha answered absently.

"I do. I should like to thank the person for keeping my baby brother alive so I can make his life hell." Sesshomaru did allow a complete smile to grace his lips and Inuyasha laughed.

"Thanks Sess. No Holiday presents for you." he joked. He hoped the change of subjects would get Sess to drop the subject.

"You can tell me you know." Sesshomaru pressured.

Inuyasha released a heavy sigh that seemed to be all the tension in the world bottled in to one hanyou, "Your girlfriend"

         "Kagome?"

"No friggin' Kagura! Of course Kagome." he answered testily.

"Oh." another long silence passed between the brothers. "I wonder if that was what Kagome was so upset about before. Maybe she wishes she hadn't saved me." Inuyasha joked.

"I highly doubt that. Knowing her it is the guilt of not saving Kikyou." Sesshomaru analyzed.

"Feh." Inuyasha rolled his eyes; trying not to let Sesshomaru see him upset.

"You should go tell her she is wrong." Sesshomaru suggested.

"Look, my girlfriend is dead, and one of the people I really don't like saved my ass. Why couldn't she let me die? I don't know. But I don't feel like comforting her. Thank you very much." with that Inuyasha stood up and stormed out of the room up to his. Sesshomaru shook his head.

He debated calling Kagome and tell her he knew and that he thanked her from the bottom of his heart. Then he reconsidered. If she wants me to know . . . she'll tell me.
§¤*~ Two Months Later -

Inuyasha dropped Sesshomaru off at the train station and watched him depart for Chicago. He called to Sesshomaru just before the train left.

"Hey! Call me when you get there!" Inuyasha walked back to his car and began the drive home.

He still had a lot of packing to do before he drove up to Ithaca for the fall semester. Miroku and him were going together, and knowing Miroku, Sango was tagging along. Sango and Miroku had been dating since a few weeks after she gave him her number. It was a big mistake for her to give him her number because Miroku was not the type to give up easily. In this case, he found one he could actually keep.

Inuyasha ran up to his room, ignoring his Fathers questions on Sesshomarus trip. He hurriedly stuffed clothes into a suitcase and made sure all his possessions (that he was bringing) were well packed and there would be nothing left behind. Finally deciding he was done with packing he called Miroku.

         ~ "Hey,"~

"Hey Miroku. Is Sango coming to Ithaca with us?"

~"Yep. But if you don't want her to than she can just ride up alone."~ Miroku's tone was sad, he obviously didn't want his 'precious' Sango driving to New York alone.

"Nah. She can come." Inuyasha resigned.

~ "Good. She is bringing Kagome too."~

         "WHAT!?" Inuyasha growled.

Kagome and Inuyasha hadn't spoken since that night at the park. Avoiding each other all summer was easy, but having to spend eight hours in a car with her . . . then avoiding becomes difficult.

Inuyasha could hear Mirokus audible 'gulp' and he pulled his temper in a few notches. "It's okay. Don't worry about it. It's all set." Inuyasha tried his hardest to sound sincere.

         ~"You rock!"~ Miroku answered.

"Yeah, yeah. They packed? Cause we're leaving tomorrow." Inuyasha noted.

~ "Yep. They're all set. Pick the three of us up here tomorrow at seven."~

"Kay. Bye." Inuyasha hung up the phone and went downstairs to talk to his Mother.
§¤*~

& nbsp;  "Sango . . . maybe I should just drive up myself. I mean, I really don't think Inuyasha's up to driving with me for so long. I'll follow you guys." Kagome began unpacking her stuff from Miroku's car (which they were going to use to bring it all to Miroku's.)

"No Kags. Come on, you are going to school with him. You'll have to see him sometime. Come on, in we go." Sango tossed the suitcase back into the trunk and closed it. She then proceeded to push Kagome around the car and into the backseat. "Sit." Sango ordered as she closed the door and got into the passengers side front seat. Miroku turned on the car and began driving to his house.

By the time the three got there; Miroku had a lump on his head the size of a small country, Kagome was fidgeting nervously worrying about seeing Inuyasha, and Sango was staring out the window with a satisfied look on her face. Miroku pulled into his drive way to see a very distempered male leaning against the hood of his new jeep. Miroku parked the car next to his Moms mini-van and got out.

"Sorry Yash. The girls packed enough stuff to last thirty years." Miroku explained, walking up to Inuyasha.

"Feh. Whatever. Get the shit in the car and lets go." He opened the back hatch and tossed the girls suitcases and boxes in the back. How he managed to fit all four of their stuff into the back of his jeep was beyond him. He did have to work at slamming the back closed however. He got in the drivers seat and waited for the rest to get in. Sango got in the back, wanting to sit and talk with Kagome, however, Miroku beat Kagome to it so he could spend the ride next to his 'lovely Sango'. Kagome bit her bottom lip and very reluctantly got in the front seat next to Inuyasha.

He started the car without another word and drove toward the highway. The ride was very silent, not even the radio was on. The only real sound was the muffled conversation coming from Miroku and Sango, but they weren't talking loud enough for everyone to hear. Inuyasha couldn't take the silence, and tossed Kagome his CD case.

"Pick out a CD." he ordered.

Kagome flipped through his CD collection, which was actually quite good, until she found one she wanted to listen to. She placed the CD in the player and turned the volume up a few notches. The familiar song rang through Inuyashas ears and he was shocked that she would pick that CD. It was from the Bad Boys II soundtrack and the first song was "Shake ya Tailfeathers." (AN I don't own the CD so I don't really know which song is first, but I know that one is on there ^_-).

Inuyasha began to loosen up around her and even began rapping Nellys part. Kagome took over when P. Diddy came on and Miroku chimed in for Murphy Lee. The three had a great time while Sango tried to block out the music. She hated rap. The song ended and another one started. Kagome didn't know this song as well, she had only put the CD in for that one song. Deciding to get over her fear of ever talking to Inuyasha again she looked over to him.

"Mind if I change the CD again?"

         "Keh. Whatever." he responded.

Kagome put in a burned CD that wasn't labeled, and hoped it was good. The first song that played was Garth Brooks "Rodeo".

"I love this song!" Kagome and Sango screamed together. As the song rounded the chorus they began singing.

"She knows his love's in Tulsa, she knows he's gonna go Well it Ain't no woman flesh and blood it's that damned ol rodeo! Well it's bulls and blood, it's dust and mud, it's the roar of a Sunday crowd, It's the white in his knuckles the gold in the buckle, he'll win the next go round. It's boots and chaps, it's cowboy hats, it's spurs and latigo. It's the ropes and the reins and the joy of the pain and they call the thing rodeo! She does her best to hold him, when his love comes to call, but his need for it controls the man, her backs against the wall. And it's so long girl, I'll see you when it's time for him to go. you know the woman wants her cowboy, like he wants his rodeo!"

As the women continued singing Inuyasha couldn't help but smile. This ride wouldn't be so bad after all.
§¤*~ Eight Hours and one pit stop later -

"That was fun!" Sango declared as she stepped out of the car for the second time in eight hours - once was merely to make a pit stop. Everyone looked at her before they nodded in agreement.

"This is a really gorgeous campus." Kagome said in amazement.

"Oh, that is right! You haven't been here! Lets go look around!" Sango jumped up and down and then ran over to her friend, grabbing her arm and tugging her along.

"Uh, girls? We still have all your junk to unpack. You can look around later." Inuyasha declared.

Sango and Kagome looked pouty before Miroku added, "If you unpack now I'll go with you later." hoping Sango would give in.

"Okay!" she let go of Kagome and made her way to her luggage. Kagome followed and soon all of them were lugging luggage into the dorms.

"I am going out for a bit Kagome." Sango announced, as the girls went through another box.

"'Kay." Kagome continued looking at her old photo albums. She didn't have many pictures in them, but the ones she did have she treasured.

There were five pictures of her, Miroku, Sango, Inuyasha and Sesshomaru. They had taken a day off this summer, before Sesshomaru left for school, and let Miroku practice his photography. She took out two of her favorites and set them aside, to tape up on her mirror. The rest she decided to properly place in the album, since they had been haphazardly tossed in there. Flipping towards the back she noticed that many of the photos were of her little brother. He was playing with his favorite ball in one picture. Another picture was when he was first home from the hospital. Kagome turned to the last picture in the book. Souta playing on his new bike. Kagome shut the book harshly. That was the day he died. She remembered.

"Miroku you in here?" Inuyasha knocked once on the door, but walked in before getting a response.

Kagome had tears in her eyes and worked hard to rid herself of them before Inuyasha saw.

"Uh . . . no, he and Sango went off together I think." she explained, looking away from Inuyasha.

"Oh, alright." he turned to leave, thinking she wanted to be sad alone. Damn. He turned around and looked down to her.

"Something else?" Kagome asked cheerfully, now free of tears.

         "What's wrong?" He asked.

         "Nothing. Why would you think-"

"Don't lie to me. I saw you crying." he sat down next to her on the floor and waited.

"I told you nothing is wrong." she placed the album she had been looking at under a stack of books and looked at him determinedly.

"It must be in this album." he deducted as he snatched the photos from their 'hiding' place. Kagome made to grab them back but Inuyasha was far too quick. She gave up and let him look.

"Who are these of? He is young. Little brother?" he asked. Kagome nodded, the small action catching Inuyashas eyes. "So why does it just stop?"

"My brother died. When he was five. He got hit by a car. Can I have the album back please?" she asked her question heatedly; determined not to cry anymore.

"Sure." Inuyasha handed it to her.

"I guess I felt guilty about the whole thing." Kagome explained, looking down at the album.

"Guilty?" he asked, not sure what she meant.

;       "Yes. Guilty that I couldn't stop it, that I couldn't save him." she looked away from his piercing gaze.

"I highly doubt it was your fault. I mean, how old were you?"

         "Eight."

"Eight? Jesus! Stop beating yourself up then. If you were only eight there was nothing you could have done! I can't believe you have guilt over that."

;       "Well I can't believe you still think you killed Kikyou!! It was an accident!" Inuyasha looked very taken aback at her outburst.

&n bsp;       "Why did you save me?" He asked, after a long and awkward silence.

 &nb sp;       "I didn't want you to die. I don't want anyone to die. Ever. I guess it is the deep sadness and guilt I feel towards not saving my little brother. But, no matter what the reason, I still would have saved you, no one deserves to die because of an accident." Kagome wasn't sure what she was talking about made sense. She just hoped Inuyasha gathered her point. He then did something she never would have suspected. He hugged her and whispered;

& nbsp;       "I understand." after a time he pulled away and said, "I would have saved me too." he then smirked. "Then again, who wouldn't save someone as awesome as me?" Kagome rolled her eyes but smiled. She was glad they were coming to some sort of an understanding.

"Hey guys. We are going exploring now. Wanna come?" Miroku asked from the doorway, his arm casually draped around Sango.

"Sure." they said in unison, standing and walking out the door.
