It was the day before Kyoko's birthday and she was walking into a deli shop when she bumped into Haru. “Hi Kyoko!” said Haru. `Oh, of all people, you?' she thought. But, she put on a smile and replied, “Hi Haru, nice to see you. What have you been up to since graduation?”
“Oh, nothing much. I am just saving up money so I can travel the world. Oh, it would be nice to see America. There are a lot of things that I want to see like The Statue of Liberty and Disneyworld!”
Kyoko laughed, “Wow, seems that you have a lot on your plate.” Haru made a sheepish smile.
“But, its great that you have plans. You can talk to your friends about it and your grandchildren, if you ever get married,” said Kyoko. “Yeah, I guess you're right,” agreed Haru.
When her number was called, Kyoko told the person that she wanted a garden salad without tomatoes. When it was being made, she continued her conversation with Haru.
“Hey, I heard that you're birthday is tomorrow. What are you planning?” Haru asked. Kyoko was thinking a little and replied, “Oh, I don't know. I think I am just going to stay home with my brother and father.”
“Gee, that stinks. You should have had a party. I mean, it's your eighteenth birthday,” said Haru. `Well, aren't you bold!' snipped Kyoko. But, she knew that he was true, but she didn't feel like celebrating.
When the person told her that her salad was done, Kyoko went to pay for it. Before she left, she was held back by Haru's hand on her shoulder. She turned around and was met by a small package. “It's your birthday present. I hope you'll like it,” explained Haru. “Thanks,” said Kyoko.
Kyoko arrived at a park and sat down on a bench. She opened the package and she gasped. It was a silver chain with a diamond snowdrop. “Oh Haru,” she gasped. She clasped the necklace around her neck.
