Soul Survivor - Chapter 4

Disclaimer: No, I certainly do not own any of the characters in InuYasha.

Kagome lay awake for quite a while after InuYasha was snoring again. It wasn't the noise that kept her awake. InuYasha didn't really snore that loudly, and she had always found it reassuring, anyway. What kept her awake was the thought that she was apparently doing things she didn't remember.

People walked in their sleep all the time (she rubbed her butt, which was a little sore), but this was ridiculous.

Was she developing a split personality? There was no history of that in her family. What was going on?

Kagome thought back and the first thing that came to mind was when she had fainted after coming out of the well house. She remembered her weird impression og seeing things for the first time…sort of like when she had been pulled through the well by Mistress Centipede.

Kagome frowned. Then there were the dreams.

She remembered dreaming about saving a boy's life using miko abilities she didn't know she had.

Wait. That had actually happened.

But you didn't suddenly pick up abilities you didn't have just because you needed them. That meant there was a second person involved, and a knowledgeable one at that.

Kikyo?

No. It couldn't be. Kagome thought about Kikyo's death and how, at the last, she had taken back the missing piece of her own soul. After its return, she felt like she was seeing InuYasha with new eyes.

She had put it down to nerves.

But she couldn't dismiss the episode with the village boy. It had been very stressful. Could stress be what triggered these episodes? So why was returning to her time through the well suddenly stressful?

It would only be stressful…to someone new…who had never experienced traveling through the well.

“No.”

It had to be some sort of leftover effect from taking back that bit of her soul from Kikyo. Yes, that was it! A part of her soul had been tainted with the undead Miko's memories!

The next time she visited the feudal era, she would ask Miroku and Kaede about how memories attach to souls and how this might have affected her. Onigumo's heart had troubled Naraku for years. Perhaps some of Kikyo's memories were now haunting her.

But why would a remnant of Kikyo's memories ask InuYasha to do that? Kagome rubbed her butt again.

As she drifted back into sleep, Kagome thought, “it's almost like Kikyo couldn't resist playing a joke on me.”

But that was ridiculous. Kikyo never had a sense of humor.

******************

Kikyo awoke to see InuYasha putting on his familiar red haori.

“You're awake, huh?”

“I am…awake.” Kikyo smirked at the irony.

“Are you feeling better?”

“What do you mean?”

“Last night you said you didn't remember asking to sleep that way.”

Her butt was a little sore. Obviously her counterpart had gotten it “in the end,” as she had planned. “I remember now.” She smiled.

“Oi. I'm glad you're feeling better.”

Kikyo smiled at the hanyou. “We must do that again.”

“Are you sure?”

“I insist.”

“If you say so, but until last night I didn't think you liked it.”

“On the contrary. You must be more…vigorous…next time.”

“Okay.” InuYasha looked at the clock. “I'm going back to see Miroku, Sango, Shippo and Kaede. Any messages?”

“Just that I am well and wish them well, too.”

“I'm on it.” InuYasha looked back from his perch on the windowsill. Say, don'tcha have to get ready for school?”

“School?” She had forgotten about that. “Oh yes. School.”

“Well, you'd better get your uniform on.” InuYasha looked at his mate with concern. “Maybe I should let you sleep through the night once in a while.” The hanyou then bounded off to the well house.

Kikyo noted the blue light with interest, then thought about “school.” What would she have to do to bluff her way through this one?

She looked around the room and found another one of those chest restraints. Then she found a drawer holding more generous versions of that thong she had worn the other day. Maybe her reincarnation wasn't as daring as she thought. She put on the outfit she had seen Kagome wear so many times in her time.

Souta knocked on the door. “Come on, sis! You're gonna be late!”

“Brother, could I walk to school with you?”

Souta looked at his sister strangely. “You know our schools are blocks apart. Besides, your friends are coming this morning.”

“I see. I guess I forgot.”

“Forget it. InuYasha said you hadn't been getting enough sleep lately.” Souta waved to his sister to follow him. “We have just enough time for breakfast.”

After a quick breakfast, there was a knock on the door. Kikyo found herself faced with Kagome's friends Eri, Ayumi and Yuka.

“Where are your books, Kagome?” asked Ayumi.

“Here they are,” said Souta, handing his sister her backpack. “Please help my sister today. She's been having trouble sleeping and can't seem to concentrate.”

“More health problems?” asked Eri.

“Let's hope you're not relapsing to when you stayed home from school for days at a time,” chimed in Yuka.

“Perhaps you could help me with…school…today. I do seem to be having trouble concentrating, as my brother says.”

The three girls stared at Kagome for a moment.

“Of course we will.”

“Yes, of course.”

“You can count on us.”

******************

The three girls managed to get Kikyo safely to school, although they wondered why she kept staring at things like tall buildings and seemed wary of cars and buses.

Fortunately, there were no tests for Kagome that day, save one, and that was in gym class. It was fortunate, also, that the few times Kikyo was called upon to answer questions, the teachers accepted her friends' explanation that she had been sick. This was Kagome, after all, and all the teachers knew about her health problems.

There were only two incidents in school and one after.

In gym class they had a test in, of all things, archery. When it was Kikyo's time to shoot, she hit the target dead center, which brought a round of applause from her classmates. On the other hand, when the bale of hay the target was mounted on burst into flame, there was a great deal of consternation.

The sensei finally determined that there must have been a piece of flint inside the bale…and that the arrow point striking the flint had set it on fire.

It was the only logical explanation.

The second incident occurred at lunch when someone started a food fight. A number of students had to be examined by the school nurse when they insisted that food thrown at Kagome seemed to hit some kind of barrier and slid down to the floor.

The third incident happened after school. The girls had decided to walk Kagome home. They were just starting out when a young man approached them. “That's Hojo,” said one of the girls.

The young and very earnest man hurried up to Kikyo. “I heard you were feeling sick again, Kagome,” said Hojo. “I know that you said you were staying with that hotheaded boyfriend of yours, but if he's mistreating you, I want you to come to me.”

“Thank you for your concern,” said Kikyo coolly as she turned to rejoin the other girls.

Hojo grabbed Kikyo and spun her around. “No, you don't under…”

There was a sudden blue flash…quick enough that nobody could be sure they saw it…and Hojo found himself on the ground, looking up.

“I'm sorry…Hojo. You must have fallen,” said Kikyo.

“I…I guess I did.” Hojo looked at Kagome suspiciously.

Kikyo turned and walked back to the other girls. “So it is not common knowledge that InuYasha and Kagome are mates. Interesting.”

On the way home, the girls dragged Kagome into WacDonald's.

Kikyo stared at the fries the girls had poured into their tray to share until she saw Ayumi dip one in a red sauce in a little paper cup and eat it. She followed suit. Not bad.

“So you're still with that two-timing boyfriend of yours?” asked Eri.

“Two-timing?” said Kikyo.

“He played you for so long…always going between you and that other girl! You never told us her name,” said Yuka.

“Kikyo,” said Kikyo.

“Has he really given her up for you?” asked Ayumi.

“I guess you could say that.”

“I still think you should give him up for Hojo,” said Yuka.

Kikyo winced at the memory of the boy. “I prefer InuYasha.”

All three girls spoke. “Really?”

“In fact, I wanted to ask you something.”

“We're your friends, Kagome.”

“What would happen if I stopped taking these pills Mama gives me?”

All three spoke again. “What?”

“You mean you've had sex?”

“With InuYasha?”

“Every night. Sometimes several times a night.”

“What?”

Yuka almost fainted. Fortunately, Eri caught her. Ayumi stared at Kagome for a moment and sputtered, “You'd get p-pregnant.”

“I see.” Kikyo looked thoughtful.

“You mean…you want to get pregnant?”

“That would be bad?”

“Uh…”

“Well…”

“The last time we made love, InuYasha whispered in my ear that I should imagine we were making pup…a baby.”

All three girls gasped. “Kagome!” All three were hyperventilating.

Kikyo smiled. That should give Kagome something to explain.

Kikyo frowned briefly, not that any of the girls saw it. Since when did she get this sloppy? Even Kagome might figure out what was going on if she wasn't careful.

******************

Back at home, Kikyo ran into Kagome's mother in the kitchen. “Are you feeling okay, Kagome? InuYasha says he doesn't think you're getting enough sleep lately.”

“I am…o-kay.”

“You do sound tired. Would you like a bath?”

“A bath? Is there a hot spring nearby?”

“A hot spring? You are tired. I'll draw a bath for you.”

A minute later, Kikyo heard the sound of running water coming from upstairs and followed Kagome's mother to investigate. She found the woman leaning over a large, floor level basin that was filling with water…hot water, judging from the steam. There was a pleasant scent and the water seemed to be topped with a host of bubbles.

“I hope you don't mind. I added your favorite bubble bath. Take off your clothes and get in.”

Kikyo stripped down and stepped into the tub. The water was hotter than she expected, but not unbearable. She sat, and then slid down into the tub. She smiled. Yes, she could get used to this.

“Feeling better?”

“Yes, Mama.”

“Would you like me to wash your hair?”

“Yes, Mama.”

Mama Higurashi was just done with the final rinse when her daughter asked her a rather strange question.

“Mama?”

“Yes?”

“If I were to stop taking the birth control pills, I would get pregnant. Is that correct?”

“Pretty much.”

“I see.”

“So you're seriously considering it?

Kikyo smiled at Kagome's mother. “Yes, I believe I am.”

******************

InuYasha didn't return until long after dinner as he had been helping Shippo learn about hunting at night. Consequently, it was bedtime when he jumped up to Kagome's window.

“Miss me?”

“Ahhh!” Kikyo knocked the book she had been reading onto the floor.

“What?”

“You startled me.”

“Feh. Done with your homework?”

“Yes, InuYasha, I am.”

“Coming to bed?” InuYasha stripped down in record time and jumped under the covers.

Kikyo smiled at him. “Of course.” She took off her clothes, too, and got into bed, snuggling into the hanyou. “I've missed you.” She pulled him down for a deep kiss…which led to so much more.

After an hour or so, InuYasha looked at his mate and said, “Kagome, you have been acting a little strangely, lately. I think I should let you get some extra sleep tonight.”

“But InuYasha…”

“No buts.”

Kikyo smiled wickedly. “Speaking of butts…”

“I think I know what you're going to ask.”

“But…I like it,” cooed Kikyo, as she pushed back against InuYasha.

InuYasha smiled and mock-sighed. “If you insist.”

The two lovers worked together until InuYasha was all the way inside.

“Now, remember what I told you about more vigor.”

“I'm on it.”

“Good.”

******************

A few hours later Kagome woke up, only to find…

“InuYasha?”

“Mm-hmm?”

“InuYasha.”

“Yes?”

“You're doing it again.”

“I am? Oh. Right. I am!”

InuYasha held Kagome tight as he began thrusting into her…shallow and slow at first…then faster and deeper.

“In…Inu-Ya-shaaaa?”

******************

Kagome was gasping as she waited for her heart to settle down. She could swear she felt InuYasha's heart pounding against her back…he was holding her so tight.

She was definitely going to have to talk with Miroku and Kaede. It would be as embarrassing as all hell, but she'd have to.

“This just isn't me,” she thought.

A/N: Looks like Kagome is about to figure it out…although she may still think she has psychological problems. Even InuYasha is worried that she has problems…although he's not even close to the truth.

Will Kagome figures it out and what might she do about it?

Just a reminder: this is a rewrite.

As always, please read and review. And thanks!
