Soul Survivor - Epilogue
By Majicman55
Disclaimer: No, I certainly do not own any of the characters in InuYasha.
Kagome looked into the nursery at the two girls and two boys sleeping peacefully, and smiled.
Somewhere, deep within Kagome's consciousness, Kikyo slept too. The two mikos had discovered surprisingly few problems working out a mutually beneficial arrangement for sharing one body…especially when they discovered the benefits when it came to child care. When Kagome got mentally tired, Kikyo took over…and vice versa.
It also helped that the re-fusion performed by Kaede and Miroku, together with her mating with InuYasha had given her additional stamina, which made raising four rambunctious pups easier than it might have been…although…
Living with Kikyo had other benefits as well. It turned out that Kikyo was a disciplined and determined student who also had, of all things, an aptitude for mathematics. So when Kagome did go to college (she graduated from high school prior to delivering), she breezed through with top marks, earning scholarships that paid for both college and now graduate school.
A couple more years and she'd…they'd…be a doctor. Guess all those times she patched up InuYasha and friends paid off.
“They look like angels when they're asleep,” said Mama Higurashi.
“Yes, they do.”
“Tea?”
“That would be wonderful.”
The two walked into the kitchen and Mama put water on. “You're going to have to enroll them in school soon, you know.”
“I know.”
“What about their…”
“Their ears?”
“Yes.”
“Kikyo and I have been working on that. Just a second.” Kagome's nose scrunched up for a moment and the look of her eyes changed. Within her own mind, she apologized for waking Kikyo and explained that Mama was concerned about the kids' first day at school. Kagome turned to the right. “Kikyo's awake now, Mama.”
Oddly enough, the two mikos had adopted Sango's suggestion for turning to the left when Kikyo spoke and to the right for Kagome.
Mama looked at her daughter. “I don't know if I'll ever get used to this.”
“Think what it's like for me,” said Kikyo, facing left.
Mama laughed.
“Think what it's like for InuYasha,” said Kagome.
“You talking about me?” asked the hanyou as he came in the back door from helping Kagome's ji-chan with the shrine.
“About the kids, actually. Mama's worried about their first day at school. Their ears, you know, and their fangs…and their claws.”
“Feh.”
“We've been working on that, though,” said Kikyo.
“Hold on a second,” said InuYasha as he moved to sit beside Mama Higurashi. “Again. This turn left turn/right turn stuff gets confusing if we're not both on the same side of ya.”
“We have a concealment spell that will work for both you and the kids,” said Kikyo. “We're adding InuYasha's to his kotadama.”
“The kids will each get their own kotadama which, like InuYasha's, won't be removable unless you know the right spell,” continued Kagome. “You don't know how much I wanted to include a subduing spell for each of those little angels.”
Again Mama Higurashi laughed. “Not so angelic when they're awake, Kagome?”
“You don't know the half of it.”
“Yes,” agreed Kikyo. “We didn't produce one-quarter hanyous. Rather, something new…”
“…something that's just now starting to manifest itself.”
InuYasha shuddered. “You know…it's scary when you two start completing each other's sentences.”
Kagome glowered at her mate. “Get used to it.”
Kikyo continued, “The spell will conceal their appearance, but will not seal their powers.”
“Powers?” asked Mama.
“Untrained, of course, but each child has both miko and youkai characteristics. There's no telling what they might become.”
“Oh my,” said Mama. “And they're going to school…”
“Don't worry, Mama,” said Kagome. “Their powers shouldn't show unless they're threatened.”
A teddy bear that had been on the sofa blinked its eyes, stood up, hopped down to the floor and wandered into the nursery.
“Or asleep.”
Kagome went into the nursery to check on the children.
******************
“This has to have been hard on you, InuYasha,” said Mama.
“Keh.”
“It's confusing for me. For you, on the other hand…”
InuYasha sighed. “One time, not long after I knew Kagome and after Kikyo's return, I wondered out loud to Miroku if I could have both girls.” Mama Higurashi looked shocked. “It was a stupid thing to say and Kagome sat me big time for it.” The hanyou grinned. “She was in the well and I didn't know it.”
Mama giggled. “I bet she was mad.”
“That's just it. Now I can't understand how she takes this so easily.”
“I heard that, you know,” said Kagome, pointing to her ears. “Picked up some of your hanyou hearing, remember?”
“Oi.”
“I don't know if I can answer that, InuYasha, except now that all the pressure's off Kikyo, living with her has been like discovering a new side of me.” Kagome mused, “I think I'm rather used to it now.”
“Feh. I'm not.” InuYasha scowled.
“Are you complaining, InuYasha? You didn't seem to be complaining last night.”
“Uhh.”
“I think he likes having both of us,” giggled Kikyo.
“Keh! It's confusing!” said InuYasha as he blushed a deep red.
“What's confusing, InuYasha?” asked Mama.
“I never know whose name to call out!”
“Whose name to?” Mama spluttered. “Whose name to call…oh!” Mama was quickly turning her own version of red.
Kagome was giggling. “Last night he yelled out something like `Kikyome.' Something like that, anyway.”
InuYasha was blushing again, too. “Well if you two weren't playing games like `guess who you're with now,” it wouldn't happen!”
Mama Higurashi was staring at her daughter. “Kagome!”
“We can't help it. It's fun.”
“Feh!”
“Besides, sharing one body helps us keep up with dog-boy, here.”
Mama looked at InuYasha who was smirking, but remained silent.
“I see. You're going to have to grow up sometime, though.”
“No. Don't think I will.”
“Don't think we will,” echoed Kikyo.
“What are they talking about, InuYasha?” asked Mama.
“We were gonna tell you sooner or later, anyway. When Kagome and I mated, she took on my lifespan.”
“And how long do hanyous live?”
“Don't really know.”
Mama's hands were shaking. “What do you mean?”
“None of us has ever died of natural causes.” InuYasha paused. “Youkai live till someone kills `em in battle, though.”
“S-So Kagome will live…”
“…forever? Yeah. Pretty much.”
A/N: Thank you to anyone who had the patience to go all the way through this.
As I've noted, it was a massive rewrite…spurred on, somewhat, by a reader named inuhanyounikkie. She was right. This had much to much graphic prose in it. I wonder what she'll think if she reads it.
I suppose I should thank her for causing me hours of work. lol
So let me know what you think of the rewritten story. Any better?
As always, please read and review. And thanks!
