Chapter Ten
Seven years later...
Kagome walked sowly down the long driveway. Takeru would be home any minute now. She met her silver headed son at the begining of the drive every day. He was still very young, no matter what Sesshomaru tried to tell her. Takeru would always be stronger than the normal person. She knew that. She knew he didn't really need protection, but her mothering instincts still held. So she walked to the end of the drive everyday to watch as her son's tiny ears appeared, then his silver head, and finally those golden eyes that reminded his mother so much of what she had lost.
Stopping and looking in the direction of the local school Kagome was suprised to find that Takeru was slowly scuffing his feet along. Usually running and bouncing around, it was really unusual for him to be walking. The scuffing feet where enough to scare Kagome to death. Something had happened. Something that must have been very bad if it made happy little Takeru so sad looking. Kagome told herself to breathe over and over as she waited calmly for the boy to reach her. When he finally did she resisted the urge to squeeze him tight. Doing that would probably terrify him. He was oddly perceptive when it came to her emotions. So she knelt down to his level and hugged him like usual and grabbed his tiny hand in her own. Walking slowly back up the drive together, Kagome forced herself to wait. Knowing Takeru he wouldn't wait long before he started to talk about what was bothering him.
"Momma? Is being a half-breed bad?" Kagome slowed to a stop as the question sunk in. "No sweetheart. Being a half-breed means you are not only part of one people, but also part of another. Why do you ask?" The small shoulders shrugged as a heavy sigh escaped. "One of the teachers is new and Mr. Nagasaki was telling him everyone's names while we played on the playground. I heard him say that I was an inu half-breed. When he said it he sounded really angry. Then the new teacher asked who my mother was. Mr.Nagasaki told him your name, but then Mr.Nagasaki called you a name and it didn't sound nice. I know it's not a nice word from the way he said it so I....." Takeru's head dropped as his animated words drifted off. Kagome could only imagine what Mr.Nagasaki had called her, but she needed to know what exactly her son had done that was so horrible that he couldn't tell her. "Takeru? What did you do honey?" Those golden eyes filled with tears as he looked up at his mother through the thick fringe of bangs. "Then I bit him in the leg." The last word turned into a sob as he launched his tiny body into her arms. He trembled as tears slid down his chubby cheeks.
"Did you hurt him Takeru?"
"Yeah. He had to go to the doctor."
"What did the other teacher do?"
"Oh yeah! I think he's like me. He actually pulled me off of Mr.Nagasaki's leg. None of the other teachers could do it."
"Did you go to the principal and tell him what happened?"
"Yeah. He gave me a note and told me to give it to you. I'm in trouble huh Mommy?" Takeru leaned away enough to look her in the eye. She nodded slowly. "You shouldn't hurt other people just because they say mean things Takeru. It will get you in trouble, not them." She made sure he understood before she hugged him close. Sometimes Takeru was a little too much like his father.
Later, after Takeru was in bed, Kagome took the note to Sesshomaru. She sat in the huge chair opposite his desk as he read through it. Lifting his head slightly to peer over at her he spoke very softly. "So the child became angry and attcked a teacher. Am I correct?" She flinched before nodding. "So they want to discuss it tomorrow. I cannot be there. I have a meeting. It cannot be canceled. The Principal will just have to deal with you alone."
"I see. Another meeting hmmm?" her soft brown eyes laughed back at him as he sat completely still. She was sure that if he hadn't been the tai youkai he would have growled outright. He had been meeting Dr. Aso for a couple years now. He didn't nesessarily try to hide it. He just didn't like having others point it out. So she found it her personal job and joy to do so as much as possible.
But tonight wasn't a good night to bug her brother-in-law. She had more important things to think about.
"Alright Sesshomaru. Tell the good doctor I said hello!"
With that she flounced out of the room as the great and terrible tai youkai grumbled to himself.

"Takeru, are you ready to go?"
"Yeah, Momma. I have my lunch and everything!"
Kagome smiled at him as his silver head bounced around her. His little ears were perked and kept twitching from side to side like miniature sattelite beacons. She absently patted his head when he sped by. Her sole attention was on her closet. The only thing she could find that seemed suitable was a sensible jeans, red t-shirt, and jean jacket. She sighed to herself before she pulled the closed otu adn put them on quickly. She really needed to get some clothing that didn't just scream MOTHER at whoever saw her.
After pulling a brush through her hair one more time she studied herself in the mirror, catching Takeru's watchful gaze in the glass. His amber colored eyes studied her. His tiny feet dangled from the end of her bed, his laces swinging with the movement. He knew how to tie his own shoes by now, he just chose not to most of the time.
"Come on kiddo. Tie those shoes up. Then we can leave."
The tiny hanyou did as he was told. He spoke softly through the curtain of silver hair, making it hard for his mother to hear.
"Did you smile alot when Daddy was alive?"
Kagome stilled instantly. She had told him not long ago about his father. What he was like. How they met. What had happened to him. Takeru had just nodded solemnly through it all. Then when she had finished he had crawled into her lap and cuddled with her. Somehow, through all the pain of remembering, she had realised that her son was truly like his father. Comforting her when she needed it without even asking.
She walked carefully over ot the bed, ignoring the fact that his shoes had been tied very quickly but he still hadn't raised his head.
"Yes. I did smle alot. Your Daddy was always trying to get me to smile. Kinda like you do."
"Ohhhh...."
"Why do you ask sweetheart?"
"You just...." His tiny ears flattened to his head as he struggled to say what was on his mind. "You just look so sad sometimes. Like you have a hurt or somethin'. I just wanted to know if Daddy was what made you so sad."
He finally lifted his tiny head and looked directly into her eyes.
"You look really pretty when you smile. I bet Daddy loved to see you smile too."
"You like to see me smile?"
A small nod was her only answer.
"Well, whenever you want, you just look at me and I'll be smiling for you. Ok honey?" He nodded his head again. She carefully took his small hand and headed to the kitchen to grab his lunch. Why did she have the feeling that today was just going to be one of those days that just wouldn't quit trying to kill her?
