Chapter Eightteen
How? It was a simple question. So why couldn't the answer be just as simple?
How had he lost his memory? Why did he leave his mate alone, with a pup coming? Why couldn't he remember anything even after he knew who he was? Weren't people supposed to remember everything once they knew their identity?
All these thoughts flew through his mind as Inuyasha stood by the door. His eyes hadn't left the picture above Kagomes bed. He could still hear Sesshomaru and his human talking. Kagome had fallen asleep with Takeru tucked neatly against her side. Her arm was wrapped protectively around the little hanyou. Takeru's clawed fingers clutched Kagome's shirt. His head nuzzled under her chin, ears twitching as the conversation got louder. His nose scrunched up in distaste, before sniffing Kagome. He smiled contentedly in his sleep.
There was no way he was going to get any answers by just standing there staring at a picture and if the argument got any louder than it already was it was going to wake up Kagome and Takeru. Something he was not going to allow right then.
"Kagome and Takeru are asleep."
Sesshomaru and Rin both stopped to look over at him. His voice hadn't been raised a single octave, but still its command held. He was standing very still by the doorway. He had not moved for quite some time. What caught their interest though, was how steady his gaze stayed trained on the bed where Kagome and Takeru lay. It was not the look of an unconcerned guardian and they both knew it.
"We will have someone come and check on her regularly throughout the night. You may go."
Go? How could he just go? The one person who could tell him who he used to be was within his reach. The mate he had been searching for since he woke from his coma was right there! He could see her...smell her. She was alive and whole, cuddling with their child not ten feet from him. His youkai was howling inside his head. His hands started to clench and unclench as he resisted the urge to walk over and sniff her delicate skin. Everything in him was shouting to move towards her.
He didn't want someone else to check on her. That was his job. At least it used to be. That thought provoked another horde of questions.
Had she recognized him that night at the party? Had Sesshomaru? He knew he didn't look exactly like he had, but surely he hadn't changed that drastically. Is that why they gave him this job? They knew who he was and wanted to keep him near? They had to have recognized him. If Takeru could from pictures alone, then could Kagome would have immediately recognized him. Wouldn't she? Sesshomaru should have been able to recognize his scent.
He looked up at the quiet couple. How long had he been standing there staring? Sesshomaru stood watching him, although he looked slightly bored. Rin looked happy. Really really happy.
"I can stay and watch over them. Checking her every two hours wouldn't be a problem."
Rin smiled at the hesitant look he shot her. He stood very stiffly, obviously waiting for Sesshomaru to shoot his plan down.
"I think that's a brilliant idea! This way they have protection and since you'll already be awake you can check on her." Rin nodded her head for emphasis. It sounded good to her. And this way she would get some real sleep before going to work in the morning. Sleep was always a good thing. Always.
Sesshomaru looked down at the top of her head for a second, before turning to consider Inuyasha once more. He found nothing wrong with the idea, other than the fact that Kagome might not like it. She was hesitant around Inuyasha still. Even after months of having him around on a day to day besis, she still got quiet and sad when he was around. It wasn't that hard to figure out why. How would he act around Rin after living the last seven years as if she were dead?
He had to keep himself from outwardly cringing at the thought.
"If anything seems remotely out of the ordinary you will come to me." With that Sesshomaru left the room, taking Rin with him.
Inuyasha stood very still as he tried to calm his thoughts. He wasn't going to get any answers tonight and he had a job to do. A job he should have been doing for the last seven years. Although with a very different title.
He was concerned about one thing though. Kagome had never indicated that she wanted anything to do with him. Most of the time she just made sure Takeru wasn't being a nuisance and then left them to whatever mischief they had been up to. She was very quiet when he was around, but he knew she could be alot of fun. He had heard her joke around with Sesshomaru's woman...Rin. Rin was always talking to Kagome about her job and funny things that had happened throughout the day. He could hear her humming songs to herself while she cooked. She was generaly a happy person, but it seemed like every time he entered the room she turned her whole personality off. Why? She had to know who he was. So why had she never said anything? Why had she never showed any interest in him? Was there someone else? Had his reappearance put a stop to a relationship she had? That thought was enough to put his youkai blood screaming again. No one would have what was his. NO ONE.
He wasn't sure what to do. On the one hand he wanted to demand answers to his questions. He wanted to get his memory back immediately so that he could enjoy the family he had been without for seven years. On the other hand his training and instincts told him to be very cautious...and if there was one thing he would trust in it was his instincts.
Takeru had told him that Inuyashas plane had gone down and that no one had been found alive. Someone had put a bomb on his plane. So somehow he had survived. He had been found and placed in a hospital for months until he woke from his coma. He knew how he came into this situation. Now he wanted to know who he was before it had happened. He wanted to know what kind of person Kagome had fallen in love with and he wanted to know if he could ever be that person again.
He checked the time on the small clock beside her bed. He was shocked to find that two hours had already gone by while he had been arguing with himself. He stretched his taunt muscles before walking over to wake her. Standing in the same position for hours on end was not a good idea. She looked so peaceful that he hated to do it, but he reminded himself that it was for her own safety.
Inuyasha was careful to shake her just enough to wake her up. He didn't want to disturb Takeru's sleep anymore than he did hers. It took a second, but he finally got her to open her beautiful eyes. She looked very groggy. Maybe a bit too groggy? No, it was just the sleep she was waiting to fall back into hiding behind her heavily lidded eyes.
"Inuyasha? I thought I unlocked my window?" The comment confused him. What did a window have to do with him being there?
"How are you feeling? Does your head hurt?" Kagome gave him a weird look, before mumbling under her breath. It sounded suspiciously like 'should have locked it'.
"I'm fine. Now will you be quiet and let me get back to sleep? Why did you wake me up anyway? Never have before...." He could tell from her scent that she was asleep. Her body curled tightly around Takeru. His little ears twitched in response.
Now what had she been talking about? What window?

Sesshomaru sat in his office chair watching as Rin walked along his bookshelf. One slender finger trailed along the spines until she found the one she wanted. He could tell from where she stood that it was one that had to do with medicine.
With her gaze trained on the pages, he took his time following the lines and curves of her body. She was very short and hadn't changed much in the years he had known her. Her body had finally reached it's full maturity, blossoming under his guarded gaze. He knew that most of the humans she worked with had begun to wonder about her. She was young, extremely young to be a doctor, and yet she was unmarried. She specialized in a field almost all humans disapproved of.
He knew that even now many of the men who she worked around wanted her. He could smell it when she entered the house. He could smell every person she had been in contact with throughout the day. Even as she cracked the door open to his office and quietly stepped in. He knew how many were youkai, hanyou, and human. The moment she walked through the front door he knew everything about her day simply by her scent. At first it had been quite annoying to know that information, but after the first few years it had been a comfort.
"Sesshomaru?" Taking a final glance over her figure, Sesshomaru looked up into her questioning eyes.
"Why did you ask me? I'm human." He didn't even try to misinterpret her question.
"I know you are human. It has not escaped my notice. This Sesshomaru has decided that you will be my mate."
Rin looked perturbed. "That doesn't answer my question Sesshomaru. Why would you pick a human? Your children will be hanyou. You despise hanyou as much, if not more than, you despise humans." Her beautiful features immediately went from confusion to complete sorrow.
"Or did you never plan on having children with me? What did you expect to do? Outlive your little human plaything and then take a full blood youkai to mate after I'm gone?" Her voice shook as each word left her lips. The book she had been holding hit the floor. Full fledged panic entered her eyes. Sesshomaru scowled. He would not have his future mate panicking and doubting him like this. It was not acceptable.
"You know the laws. Inu youkai mate for life. No matter the mates origins. This Sesshomaru knows that his pups will be hanyou. It is no matter." He hadn't meant to comfort her, but still he found himself walking steadily closer to her as he spoke. Her hands stopped shaking and her eyes once again focused on his own. She reached out for him-wrapping her arms around him as tightly as she could.
"Tell me Sesshomaru. Please?"
"You are different. You are much like Kagome. Strong in what you believe. This Sessho- I. I was wrong to think that all humans were useless. You do not see the differences in us that others see, and because of that you are stonger. Our pups will be hanyou, but they will be strong like their mother and fierce. They will see the world through your eyes as you have taught me to."
Sesshomaru felt his mate snuggle closer to him as tears soaked his shirt. He ignored the scent of saltwater as he held her tighter. His chin rested on the top of her head as he waited for her to stop crying.
Silly humans. They always showed far too much emotion.
