Chapter Twenty-One
He hated being right. His being right always meant that something was going to go all to hell.
She didn't want anything to do with him. Nothing whatsoever. She had moved on with her life; left her past behind her, while he searched hopefully for it.
He shouldn't have been searching. He never should have gotten so close. Number one rule. Never let a client overrule your judgement. But he'd broken that rule and now there was no help for it. Now he knew the truth and it was bitting him in the ass.
He had to protect her, watch her, from a distance. She probably never thought she'd see him again. She thought she no longer had to deal with him and then boom! He'd shown up and changed all her plans. And he couldn't even remember anything!
He wanted to though. Oh how he wanted to remember. The days spent with Kagome, the conversations, the simple joy of looking at her smiling face and knowing that she was his. So why couldn't he? Why was there a block there? He could remember everything from waking up so clearly, but before that is nothing. Complete blackness. A void where his history should be.
Inuyasha rubbed a weary hand across his eyes. He'd been given a room beside Takeru's so that he could watch both Kagome and the pup. He sat at the deep mahogony desk staring at a pile of paperwork. The exact same pile of papers he'd been staring at for the last hour.
He'd almost convinced himself to actually start on the load of paperwork when he heard the door open. He couldn't see who entered the room from his desk. All he could see was a pair of tiny silver ears headed to his chair.
Takeru stopped beside him and stood quietly for a moment. His little ears were perked up and moving around, listening to the noises of the fan and the whirl of the laptop that sat on the desk. Inuyasha noticed the tiny covered feet shuffling nervously. What was going on the kids head?
Takeru crawled up into Inuyashas lap then crawled onto the desk in front of him. Standing there with his ears going a mile a minute, feet shuffling, and small hands grasped into fists made Takeru look as nervous as a man trying to propose.
"What's wrong runt?" Takeru's ears flattened before springing back up again.
"I don't like it."
Inuyashas eyebrows rose with that declaration. "Don't like what?" Takeru looked him straight in the eye with dead seriousness.
"My stomach feels funny around her. She giggles alot and tugs on my ears.....and I LET HER!" The last piece of that statement trailed off on a wail of misery.
And he had no clue what to do about it. Really. How was he supposed to know how to deal with four year old females?
"Who are you talking about Takeru? Shinju?" At his sons hesitant nod Inuyasha tucked in a small smile. "Girls tend to giggle alot and they do love to play with the ears. What do you mean your stomach hurts?"
"It feels like I've drunk too much soda and then ran really fast. It bubbles and wobbles when she's around. I don't like it. We should get rid of her."
"Takeru, she's a little girl. She's not doing anything to hurt you. Other than maybe tugging on your ears and you said you let her right? So she's not being mean or anything. She just likes the ears. As for the stomach issue? Maybe if you talked and played with her a little that would go away."
Takeru looked at him with such complete misery Inuyasha had a hard time not bursting into laughter.
"Did you ever have the wobbling feeling in your stomach?"
"Yeah, pup I did. Still do sometimes. It just means I'm nervous." The little hanyous eyes got large at that admission.
"YOU get nervous? Really? How do you make it go away?"
"Of course. Everybody gets nervous. I just deal with whatever is making me nervous and it goes away on it's own. Maybe since Shinju is the one making you feel that way you should talk to her. That way you'll get comfortable with her and the feeling will go away." Takeru gave him an unsure look but nodded his head anyway.
Takeru jumped from the desk, making a large thump as he landed. Both sets of hanyou ears flicked to the left as they heard a distinct warning growl. Takeru grinned with a joy only rambunctious little boys get. Inuyasha grinned right back.
"Uh...Mr. Ito? Could we....um...can you not tell mama bout it? She'd worry and I don't like it when she worries."
Inuyasha nodded as he watched a relieved look pass over Takeru's face.
"Just remember what I said Takeru. Everyone gets nervous. Just face it and it'll go away eventually."
"I'll remember." Takeru smiled before he ran out of the room, his nails clicking against the hardwood floors as he went.

Miroku sat in the backyard listening to his young daughter sing one of her random songs. Shinju loved to make up songs about her day or who she had spoken to and then sing it to herself. She'd done it since she learned how to speak and Miroku doubted that she would ever quit.
This song though was fascinating him.
"Golden golden halo eyes
silver silver silky hair
doggy ears I want to play withhhhhh!!!!!!
Alllllllllll
make up my Takie!!!!"
So far he was pretty sure she was describing Takeru. She'd become very attached to the little boy. The instant she had walked into the house and seen him she'd decided that he was hers.
Everyone was hugging and smiling in the foyer of the large house. Although Miroku would hardly call it a 'house'...more along the lines of mansion. Takeru had been standing off to the side watching his mother squeel and laugh with the woman he'd seen only pictures of. His ears were swiveling everywhere, trying to locate every sound and catalogue it for later reference. He looked so much like the man standing next to him that Miroku was starting to doubt that Inuyasha didn't know what was going on. That and the fact that the older hanyou was having trouble keeping his eyes away from Kagome's smiling face.
Shinju had been asleep on his shoulder when they'd walked in, but Miroku felt her start to squirm in his arms. He carefully sat her on her own feet and held her until he was sure she wouldn't topple over. Balance was not something Shinju was good at. She was fine as long as she wasn't sleepy. She had a bad tendency to tilt when she was tired.
He'd watched in suprise as his quiet shy little girl had zeroed in on Takeru's ears and latched onto them. Literally. Takeru had stood stock still as the little girl had rubbed on ear with both of her chubby hands and then gone to do the same to the second.
"My puppy!" All the adults in the room looked like they were desperately trying not to laugh. Takeru had pulled his head slightly away, trying to break the contact, but it was no use.
His declared "Leech!" made Shinju giggle as she patted the older boys head before grabbing his hand and dragging him over to show off her new suitcase.
Miroku watched her dance around in the grass as she sang, the entire time wondering how in the world he was going to seperate his little girl from her 'puppy' when they had to go back home.

Sorry I haven't been back in sooo long. 6 months is far too long to leave a story and I apologise to all my faithful readers out there. Hopefully these two new chapters will help jumpstart me back into the system.
Always,
