Chapter Twenty-Three

Shinju trembled against the chill air that filled the room. She scrunched up closer to the warm body in front of her. Small trembling arms wrapped around her, trying in vain to keep her warm. Takeru's hanyou blood would keep him alive, but he was getting worried about Shinju. She was just a human after all and it was so cold. The room they were in was icy. There was a single blanket they used. It was the only thing keeping them from the iced over floor.

Takeru couldn't smell anything in there either. He'd tried to claw his way through the ice but it was no use. It had drained alot of his energy and had made his wound bust open again. He could feel the warm blood freezing into his hair. It made his head feel heavier on one side. He didn't like it. He'd tried to yell for help too, but whoever was on the other side of the door would just bang on the walls to shut them up. It had scared Shinju enough to make Takeru quiet down.

Shinju hadn't said much since she'd been dropped in there. Crying in her sleep and calling for her parents was about all the noise she made. She would have nightmares everytime she fell asleep, then wake up and cry again. Her cheeks were chapped really badly from the tears freezing onto her face.

He stared at the door for a long time, wondering how he could get out with Shinju. The door would open every few hours for a split second while someone threw in some bread and a thermos. The bread was cold and sliced pretty thin, but the hot chocolate kept them from completely freezing. Takeru's only problem was getting Shinju to drink and eat. She never wanted to move and it was getting harder and harder to get her to come out of her daze.

Takeru shifted carefully as the door opened. And opened. And then finally creaked as it hit the wall. The bright lights from the other room blinded both of the children. A rough hand grabbed Takeru and jerked him into the other room before slamming the door shut.

Shinju jumped to her feet when she realised her friend had been taken. She ran to the door and started to beat on it with her small cold fists. She opened her mouth to scream, but something stopped her.

It was a pained howl that reached even beyond the frozen room she occupied. Tears slid down her cheeks as the howls rose and fell time and time again. A rough laugh could be heard as the howls cut off abruptly, only to start once again. It had sounded like Takeru. She hadn't ever heard him make a noise like that before, but she knew it was him and she knew he was in pain. An enraged yell echoed around her, mixing with the howls into something the little girl would never forget.

Every noise abruptly stopped. Shinju learned at that very young age that the only thing worse than hearing your friend scream in pain was not knowing why he had stopped.

"Dumb defensless little hanyou brat. You can't even see me can you?" Takeru kept quiet as he waited for his eyes to adjust to the brightness of the room. His ears were swiveling like mad to catch every sound this person made. He knew the man was standing in front of him and that he was wearing some very thick collogne to disguise his smell. Otherwise his senses weren't helping him out. He hands were tied to the bottom of the chair, keeping his claws far from any rope.

"I can't believe someone would willingly sleep with, let alone give birth to, a hanyou. It's disgusting. A sick perversion of the soul. You never should have been born. Never should have been given the chance to grow in your mothers belly. She was nothing more than a whore for that dog. I will fix her problems for her though. I'll get rid of you first and then kill that bastard Inuyasha."

A blindfold was tied tightly around his head to keep him from seeing once again. Takeru listened carefully as the man paced around his chair. With each sentence he could feel the man getting closer and closer. There was a slight whistle in the air that he coudn't figure out. It sounded almost like a bird swooping down to land, but sharper.

"She went around acting like such a sweet girl when in reality she was probably fucking that twisted hanyou trash all along. Everyone knew he slept in her room. Even kept some clothes in there so he could change. I would have been so good for her. So perfect. We could have had a life together. She chose to slum instead. Refused me. ME! That bitch is going to pay. Dearly."

Takeru couldn't hold back his howl of pain as he felt the blade slice into his sensitive ear. Another howl slipped out as the top of his left ear was sliced in a jagged line until the small black tip was cut completely off. His nails raked the wooden bottom of his chair as he struggled to escape the pain. He let out howl after howl as his tiny ears were cut into. The man was laughing as he jerked and sliced through his tough skin.

"Her hanyou. Her baby boy that looks so much like his bastard father. I'll kill you both and make sure you feel as much pain as possible so that she will know how true pain feels."

Takeru growled low in his throat at the threats to his momma. The growl was cut of as that sharp blade dug into his hair and in a simple destructive swipe hacked off his right ear. Takeru passed out cold as he felt the blows to his body start.

Takeru grunted as he was thrown back into the icy room. His whole body ached, but it was his ears that were the worst. Shinju crawled over to him in the dark and grabbed onto his shirt. Her blind hands found his arms and followed them up until she reached his face. Her tiny hands were ice against his fevered skin. He groaned and slid to his side, pulling Shinju with him. He curled his body around her, sniffing hard to catch her scent. He tried to catch every sound she made, but his ears weren't cooperating. He knew why, but he didn't want to think about it.

"Takie? Are you ok? What happened?"

"I'm ok Shinju. I'm tired. Let's sleep."

She wiggled around until she was facing him in the dark. His eyes had adjusted once more so he could see the chapped skin on her cheeks from crying again.

"What happened? Why...why were you...howling like that? It scared me Takie. What did the mean man do?"

Takeru shook his head and tried to turn her back around, but she was being stubborn about it.

"TAKIE! Say somethin to me!" She lifted her short arm and patted him on the head. He flinched and made a snorting growling noise in the back of his throat. When she pulled her hand back she felt strands of his wet hair stick to her fingers. Flashes of what had happened to her daddy slid through her mind as she felt the blood cool and dry on her hands.

"Takeru.....?"
