Chapter Twenty-Four
Inuyasha lay curled against the woman he knew was his mate. His body knew it, even his mind did in it's own warped way, but it was the way he felt Kagome react to him that let him know he could trust himself. He wasn't wishing or in another dream. This was true. This was reality and now that he had it he had no clue what to do with it. He had searched for her. Begged the gods for some sign that he was headed in the right direction. In the end it had been a child, his child, that had brought him that final step forward.
His child that he was ashamed to say he could not find. Takeru and Shinju had been missing for four days. They had received only the one note. No word to let them know that their children were at least alive.
“What would you do if you were him? The kidnapper I mean. What would be your reasoning for taking two small children?”
Kagome tried to keep her voice steady as she asked, but she knew Inuyasha would hear the slight tremor in her voice. His arms tightened around her before he answered.
“I don’t know his reasoning. He wants to hurt you, which means that whatever he does he will do to make sure you hurt as much as he hurts.”
He really didn’t want to ask this question but he knew he wasn’t the only one thinking it.
“Kagome? What if... What if it really is Hojo?”
He could feel her body tighten in his arms. She sat up carefully and slowly turned to face him. Her chin was tucked down against her chest so that she spoke to her feet.
“When I lost you I lost everything. My world broke into so many tiny shards. The only thing that kept me going was the knowledge that I carried a little bit of you with me. Something to remind me of what you would have wanted for us. Takeru is my life now and when you came back to us I was so afraid of what you would think of me and our child. But you aren’t the man I loved. You look the same, act the same, even have the same mannerisms, but you don’t remember me. You don’t remember us or what we had. So I may be able to look at your face once again and smile, but I know that my Inuyasha will never come back. Takeru a piece of my life I refuse to lose. I will not let anyone take my son from me. I will pull hell back into this world to have my son back. If it is Hojo? He needs to be ready. I will kill anyone who harms my child.”
Kagome lifted her face to his, tears trailed down past her cheeks to drip off her chin. Her heart broke a little at the hurt in his eyes, but she would not go back on her words. It was the truth and no amount of heartbreak would change it. She learned that lesson a long time ago.

Shinju was sleeping again. Takeru didn’t mind. The less she remembered the better off she would be.
His back hurt again. Even with the iced up sides of the cooler against his burns he could still feel the skin blister. Bastard had used a brand on him again. He was learning very quickly how to calm himself during the pain. It always made Bastard angry when he didn’t cry or howl, but he wasn’t going to make Bastard happy. That was one thing he was never ever going to do.
Takeru curled himself around Shinju to lend her some body heat. He knew now that Bastard wasn’t planning on keeping Shinju. He hadn’t once tried to talk to her or bring her out to hurt her. That was fine with him though. He would take it all as long as she didn’t get hurt. She was too precious to let something bad happen to her.
He was still worried about her though. She wouldn’t talk anymore. She had stopped talking a couple days ago. Now she just blinked up at him, but he knew what she was feeling and thinking. Her eyes told him how sad she was, how badly she wanted to go home.
It was the same thing he knew was in his own sad eyes.

Sooooo…. I’ve been gone a grand total of 3 years now. Getting back into the story is a touch difficult, but I will prevail! I want to say a very heartfelt thank you to everyone who has encouraged me to finish this story. I will continue on.
