I Am Happy
Silence.
I don't mind it much, because even when I can't hear my mother breathing, I know she is there. I can feel her heartbeat, sense the expansion and contraction of her chest. It all reverberates through my body, starting up at my feet. And I draw comfort from it. She is my mother, and my home.
I don't know how long I've been in here, and even if I did, I would have no idea how to quantify that time period. It doesn't seem like very long. Was it always so cramped in here? But it doesn't matter; this is my home and I want no other.
I feel a slight pressure on the outside of my home. Quiet conversation follows between my mother and a man. I recognize his voice; it belongs to the one I instinctively know as my father. It is his hand resting on the outside of my home. With a little movement I tap the inner wall, and I can tell from his small jolt that he feels it. I'm glad mother and father are here; they make me feel safe. I am happy.
Suddenly my mother makes a noise that I don't like, and a strange ripple goes through her body. This isn't like anything I've ever felt before. Something is happening to my home. Mama, I'm scared.
I think she is scared too. It only gets worse, the pulses coming closer and closer together. Why? Why is my Mama in so much pain? I'm moving now, though I try to stop myself. But Mama's body keeps pushing me little by little, and I can't resist. Stop! I don't want to leave my home! Mama, please can I stay with you? Please?!
Then I am no longer inside Mama. My chest expands for the first time, and I let out a frightened wail. I continue crying. There are strange hands on me now, rubbing something wet over my skin. It doesn't hurt, but I'm scared. Where are my mother and father?
Then a new set of hands takes me and a familiar voice speaks to me. I stop crying; I recognize that voice. That's my father! Finally, I open my eyes. Gold and white. My vision is blurry, but I see those two colors. I sniff and memorize his scent. Then an uncomfortable feeling wells inside my tummy, and I start to fuss again.
Feed me! Feed me! Can't you see that I'm starving here?
My father hands me off to someone else, and I instantly know who this person is. I feel something soft poking me in the cheek, and I latch onto it with my lips. Nothing happens, and I get frustrated, but then something comes out. It tastes good! I start sucking with vigor. Mama is feeding me. I am happy.
Silence descends on my world again. I open my eyes to see mother and father gazing down at me in awe. Good. I find that I like being the center of attention.
