Blue Sky

“See ya, Kagome!” Kouga called as he departed, the winds swirling around his body in a miniature twister.

Kagome sighed gratefully, glad the customary awkward moment had passed. He really was like a tornado, she mused, appearing out of nowhere and vanishing after only a few minutes, leaving a few unhappy individuals in his wake. A surly, jealous hanyou, to name one. Shippou didn't much care for Kouga either, having never quite forgiven the ookami for nearly feeding him to his wolves. Not liking Kouga was one of the few things the Inu-hanyou and kitsune agreed on.

Inuyasha was in an especially bad mood today, maybe because Kouga had kissed her hand. She didn't understand what his problem was; it wasn't like such a gesture really mattered to her. Kouga was a tornado, and the last thing she wanted was to get carried off in one of those. No, what she wanted was more like a… Hmm, what kind of storm was Inuyasha like?

A hurricane? No, those left nothing but devastation and death in their wake, which was a more apt description of Naraku than anyone else. A thunderstorm? Loud and menacing; that described Inuyasha at least some of the time. A blizzard fit Kikyou or Sesshoumaru because they were both so cold. In battle Inuyasha was like a firestorm, but so were Sango and Miroku. Shippou was like an afternoon drizzle with a beautiful rainbow panning across the sky.

The more she thought about it, the more she realized that Inuyasha could not be described by any one storm. He was like the weather itself, capable of both terrifying power and unmatched tranquility. Sometimes his actions placed her in her own private torrential downpour, and other times he made the sun shine brighter than she ever thought possible. Clouds from the past moved in and out, sometimes hovering ominously overhead, sometimes moving so far away that she could almost forget about them. She cherished those times, basking in the blue sky and bright sunlight for as long as she could before the storm clouds rolled back in.

Inuyasha had not spoken more than a few words since Kouga's departure. At camp that night, Kagome made him ramen and sat down next to him, leaning gingerly into his side. He didn't do anything romantic, like wrap his arm around her, but neither did he pull away. For the first time all day, he relaxed, slowly eating his meal as much of the tension eased from his body. He tossed the empty container into the fire and stared into the flames for awhile before finally speaking, just one word.

“Thanks.”

Kagome nodded and smiled. She could already see blue sky on the horizon.
