Unknowing Comfort
The hanyou stared hatefully at the full moon. He felt the blood pounding in his temples, rushing quickly through his body. His heart thundered, the beat rapid and deafening.
He glanced over at the only one of his companions still awake, the young miko studying by the fire. She was so oblivious, so naïve. She did not know how the full moon struck him, how it called out to the beast within him just as its absence brought his humanity to the surface. She did not know that all the blood pulsing through his veins, all the heat welling in his body…was for her.
He snarled, forcefully suppressing his desires. He would never let the lustful animal living within him take control, no matter how difficult it was to hold back.
“Is something wrong, Inuyasha?”
Her voice nearly caused him to jump out of his own skin, the shock seeming to jolt his resolve to the point of collapse. There she was, kneeling beside him, gazing at him in concern. He wanted to run, but his feet would not move. He wanted to warn her, but his tongue had dissolved into sand. Go away, Kagome. Please, go away!
Frantically he met her eyes, seeking to convey that desperate sentiment. His heart stopped, his head cleared by the absolute trust shining in her chocolate orbs. And suddenly, it was not so hard to resist the lustful animal.
He managed a shake of the head. Apparently satisfied, Kagome leaned tentatively into his side, resting her head on his shoulder. Every muscle in Inuyasha’s body tensed.
“The full moon is beautiful, isn’t it?” she asked, the serene quality of her voice casting a soothing wave of tranquility over him. Finally, after several long moments, he felt relaxed enough to respond.
“Yeah, it is.”
