A Small Privilege
“Dammit! Would you quit splashing me, wench?!”
“Aw, come on, Inuyasha. Don’t be such a wet blanket.”
“Keh.”
Rolling her eyes, Kagome gave up and returned to her game with Shippou. Inuyasha briefly considered simply moving away, but this dumb girl was a magnet for danger. Besides, seeing her play in the river with the young fox was affecting him in a number of ways.
The physical stirring was not all that surprising. He had told Kagome when they first met that Kikyou was far prettier than she, but that was an outright lie. He still thought Kikyou was more beautiful, but Kagome’s body was young and attractive, if not fully matured. And she was showing it off in such an innocently indecent manner, frolicking in that thing—it could not reasonably be termed ‘clothing’—she called a swimsuit.
So it didn’t surprise him that his gaze was drawn to her, and if that had been the only abnormality, he would have simply brushed it off. But there was something else, something far deeper than physical attraction. It was the fact that she was playing so easily with Shippou. That was something he had certainly never expected to see in his lifetime—a human and youkai cavorting together. No mistrust, no inherent suspicion, just a teenage girl and a young boy having a great time.
He caught himself wishing he’d known someone like Kagome when he was a child, but shook that thought away. It would do no good to dwell on the past; he had survived this long by pushing forward. Still, he saw no reason to deny himself the small privilege of watching them, his gaze now focused on both the miko and the kitsune. He did not smile, but he did at least stop frowning.
