Protectiveness

Sesshoumaru stopped in his tracks, turning his head to the side.  Jaken followed his master’s stare, his mouth dropping open at the unexpected sight.  There, coming toward them through the trees, was a large, rotund, completely hairless creature with enormous eyes squinted almost completely shut.

“Sesshoumaru-sama, it’s the soul piper!”

It didn’t take a genius to figure out what the youkai was doing here.  Sesshoumaru had just revived the little human girl, the one currently gazing up at him in adoration.  Jaken frowned.  Hmph!  I should be the only one to look at him in such a manner.  Why did Sesshoumaru-sama bring that girl back to life anyhow?  Perhaps it had just been to test Tenseiga’s power.  Hopefully they would just drop the girl off at the next human village and be done with her.

The soul piper advanced slowly, glaring at the girl in obvious confusion.  It’s probably wondering why she isn’t dead, Jaken thought.  Although it could see she was alive, it began to play its soft, soothing melody.  Far from being comforted, however, the girl shrank back and hid herself behind Sesshoumaru’s leg.  Jaken felt a vein pop in his forehead.  She shouldn’t be touching him either!  Why the audacity of that little—

“Be gone,” Sesshoumaru declared suddenly, his voice soft but authoritative.  “She will not be going with you.”

The soul piper stopped playing, its eyes widening slightly at the challenge.  Sesshoumaru’s hand drifted toward Tenseiga’s hilt, aware of the danger should the youkai fully reveal its malevolent crimson orbs.  If the sword could cut the imps of the underworld, he wagered it would be effective against this youkai as well.  But the soul piper seemed to hesitate, hovering motionless and staring at Sesshoumaru for several long moments.  Finally, its eyelids lowered once more, and it turned and went on its way.  Without a word, Sesshoumaru resumed walking through the trees, the young girl following closely at his heels.

Jaken remained frozen in shock, as he had been since his master spoke.  There had been something unusual in Sesshoumaru’s tone, a protectiveness Jaken had never heard before.  With a grimace, he realized the girl was likely with them to stay.

“Jaken-sama, you’re being left behind,” came a gentle, feminine voice, startling Jaken from his stupor.  He hurried to catch up with his master, casting a sidelong glance at the little girl once he did.  Those were the first words she had spoken since her revival; even when he had prestigiously introduced himself and Sesshoumaru, she had only nodded solemnly in response.  He had thought her rude, and his dislike of her had intensified.  But she apparently cared enough about him to call after him, something his master would never do.

Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad having this girl around.  He did enjoy being called “Jaken-sama.”
