Together

Kagome sighed blissfully, leaning against the side of the hut.  She gazed out over the landscape, taking in the majestic beauty of the sunset.  The sky, tinged a stunning shade of pink, seemed to glow in the fading light.

“What’s wrong, wench?” Inuyasha called from his spot on the roof, having misinterpreted her soft exhale.

“Nothing’s wrong,” she replied.  “I just think the sunset is so beautiful tonight.  You never get to see it like this in the city.”

“Keh,” he scoffed, “the sky just turned pink.  What’s so great about that?”

Kagome frowned, sensing something deep within his gruff response.  She could guess what was bothering him, having herself been overcome with that same sense of foreboding.  All of them had experienced it recently, the feeling that something important was about to happen.  Naraku had almost all of the Shikon no Tama in his possession, and with Kikyou’s demise, no one expected him to wait too much longer before making a major move.  Especially when Inuyasha and Tetsusaiga only continued to grow in strength every day.  Now, to see this great pink sky, the color too close to blood red for comfort, Kagome understood why it made Inuyasha feel uncomfortable.  If it was an omen, it could easily be one of pain and death.

But Kagome was not too worried.  She had witnessed the extent of her friends’ strength, how tenaciously they fought for one another, and the might of their hearts.  Whatever happened, they would prevail over the soulless evil that was Naraku.  They had to.  No omen could control their fate.

“Don’t worry, Inuyasha,” she said softly.  “We’ll make our own destiny.”

He made no reply, and for a few moments silence settled between the pair.  Then he suddenly dropped down in front of her, his golden eyes shining with the same intensity as the sky.  He scooped her up in his arms and leapt back up to the roof, depositing her next to him.

“You can see better from up here,” he mumbled, looking embarrassedly away.  Kagome reached over and grasped his hand in her own, squeezing gently.  He did not look at her, but he did tentatively return the pressure.

Smiling, Kagome returned her gaze to the sunset.  Whatever lay ahead of them, they would persevere, together.
