Chapter #1 - Deep in Thought

"Kagome, hey are you listening to me?"
"Huh? Oh sorry Ayumi." Kagome's lame response was unconvincing to her friend. She was mulling over a mental checklist trying to remember everything she needed to take back with her through the well.
'My school books, first aid kit mom bought for me... gotta remember to thank her for that…'
"Kagome..."
'Hmm, InuYasha's ramen, I swear he gets more upset with me when I forget the stuff than when I say I am going home...'
"Hey Kagome...hello? What do you think she is thinking about Eri?" Ayumi huffed.
"I dunno, probably that two-timing bad-boy she's dating" Eri replied looking less than interested. 'Socks, underwear, tooth-brush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner...'
"Hi there, how are you all today?" The three coherent girls jumped at the sound of Hojo who had come up behind them.
"Oh hi Hojo" they said together, relaxing a bit.
"Is everything alright with Kagome? She looks in pain"
"She's fine" Yuka laughed "Her mind is just somewhere else at the moment"
"Kagome has amnesia?" He asked, shocked as to why she would have been at school with such an ailment.
"Eh? Oh, no no... I just mean that she is lost in thought"
"We have been trying to get her attention for a while but she can't stay focused for longer then a few seconds" Ayumi put in.
"Oh I see. She must really be thinking hard about something then" Hojo smiled thoughtfully. Kagome had remained completely oblivious to the conversation her friends were having about her. She was certain that she was forgetting something on her list.
'Hmm, what could it be...' "Oh! Treats! Of course" Not realizing her audible burst had shocked her friends, Kagome now had a new thought. What to get for Miroku, Sango, Shippo, Kirara and Kaede. "Do you guys mind if we stop by the market... Oh, hi Hojo. When did you get here?" Kagome asked. Smiling, he replied
"Hello Kagome. About five minutes ago but you were deep in thought so I figured I'd wait till you finished."
"So Kagome, why the need to go to the market?" Eri asked finally showing some sign of interest. "I have to buy some treats for Sh... Souta" 'Man that was close' She thought to herself.
"You? Buying treats for your kid brother?" Eri and Yuka said together. Kagome laughed nervously before saying something about rewarding him for getting her homework for her.
"May I come with you Kagome?" Hojo asked.
"Uh, sure" She replied dumbly.

As the small group of friends walked up and down the isles, Kagome seemed to be deep in thought again as she picked things off of the shelves to place in her basket. Her friends were watching the amount of items she had grabbed and wondered amongst themselves if they were all for Souta.
"Uh... Kagome?"
'Hmm, potato chips for Miroku, pocki for Sango...'
"Hmm, Kagome's taking a vacation again" Eri joked, unfortunately Hojo misunderstood. "Vacation?" Yuka sighed as Ayumi explained that had meant Kagome was back to thinking hard. "Of course," he laughed. "She shouldn't be thinking so hard though. Such a strain can't be good for her health!" Kagome placed another couple of snacks in her basket and then went to the next isle. She grabbed some tea, and then moved onto the next. When Kagome reached for some catnip, her friends jolted her from her vacant state.
"Um, Kagome... why are you getting your little brother catnip?" Hojo pointed out that he didn't think that would be the kind of treat her brother would like.
"It's not for Souta, it's for my cat Buyo" When they got to the counter to pay, Kagome realized that she had forgotten to grab something for Shippo. She looked around for a chupa-pop, but only saw some sugar-stix. She grabbed a large handful and plunked them down with the rest of her purchases. On their way home, Kagome slumped and grumbled about all that stuff never fitting in her bag, along with everything else she had already to put in it.
"I guess I'll just have to leave my books behind again", She sighed aloud. Hojo looked at her with concern.
"Kagome, I must stress that going camping in this cool whether is not good for your health at all" "Eh? What are you talking about Hojo... I'm not going camping" She stated rather confused. "Well..." He droned out, "You seem to be packing your bag with enough stuff to last you the weekend"
'Eeep!' She thought, 'Did I say that out loud?' Her friends stood there waiting for an answer from her, when she spied the shrine steps. "Sorry guys, gotta run,” She hollered back to them as she bolted for the steps, "Bye" Her friends just watched the retreating Kagome before turning to continue on their way.

Kagome didn't stop running till she was inside with the door closed behind her. Heaving a heavy sigh of relief, Kagome took off her shoes and headed up to her room. She put down her bags momentarily so she could empty her school things. Kagome examined all the items she had on her bed ready to be relocated into her bag. Along with all the groceries... there really wouldn't be any room for her books after all. Kagome's education had really been suffering, but somehow it just didn't compare to everything else that had happened to her over the recent year. When had the Sengoku Jidai pushed school out of her number one priority spot? She smiled as she remembered; it was the moment she laid eyes on those fuzzy ears. She came down stairs and into the kitchen to be greeted by her mother.
"Hello dear how was school today?" She asked her daughter with a cheerful smile.
"Just fine mom. Oh! Thank you for the first aid kit. The other one is running low on everything" She didn't like her mother to know that the past was in fact more dangerous then she let on. "You're welcome, just be careful alright Kagome? I worry about you, all of you."
"Thanks mom" She smiled. Kagome threw a bag of chips on the table, saying they were for Souta before heading upstairs for a shower. As Kagome let the warm water run over her, she recalled the close calls she had while with her friends. She thanked the Kami, she didn't let slip her double life. Kagome turned off the shower, wrapped a towel around her self and went into her room. When she was dried and dressed, she looked at the mass of junk on her bed that needed to fit into her bag somehow. After packing and un-packing several times, Kagome finally managed to get everything to fit. Satisfied with her efforts, she went downstairs. She popped her head into the kitchen to let her mother know she was leaving.
"Be back in a couple days mom, bye"
"Bye Kagome, Be careful" She called to her daughter. She assured her mother she would be, before closing the door and taking off for the well house. Once inside she set her things down on the ledge of the well, swung her legs over, grabbed her bags and disappeared into a warm blue light that sped her away from this world and into the past.
