InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Synthetic Twilight ❯ VI ( Chapter 6 )

Kagome had been on the road for a few hours, when she noticed a demonic aura coming towards her. She dismounted and rubbed Umakuroi absently, "Easy, girl" she said while looking off in the direction that the aura was from. She supposed that it was a little too much to hope that it was another tiny fox demon as she watched a large path being created in the field on the other side of the road. Umakuroi whinnied nervously, Kagome could sympathize, she was feeling pretty nervous herself.
The large minotaur type demon stepped onto the road, paused and reguarded her with a snort. "I'm hungry, give me the horse, girl, and I might spare you" he growled.
Kagome gulped and tightened her grip on her bow. So much for oxes to drive away evil spirits. "I will not." she said with a steadier voice than she felt at the moment.
"Then I'll eat well tonight!" he called before charging at her.
Kagome pulled a slightly crumpled ofuda from her jacket pocket and threw it at the demon. Please work, please work, she chanted in her head as the piece of paper seemed to fly at the minotaur in slow motion. The demon stopped and fingered the piece of paper stuck on his forehead and laughed. Kagome felt her heart drop, Shit, I'm doomed!
"Little girl, you have spirit, but this paper isn't going to stop me!" he yelled. He then tried to take a step forward and screamed in pain as sparks shot from his body. "Witch! What have you done to me?!" Kagome let out a relieved sigh and pointed her bow at the demon.
The minotaur eyed the woman nervously, out of all the people he could've eaten, he had to choose a priestess! "H-hey I, uh, was just kidding about the-" he didn't get to finish his sentence as Kagome let her arrow fly and his body exploded with a pink light.
The adrenaline rush left Kagome feeling weak as she slumped to the ground laughing. I'm alive! "I'm alive!" she shouted, standing up and looking at her clothes. "... Alive and covered in demon guts" she whined. She turned Umakuroi back towards a stream she had passed a mile ago. Well, even with this setback, I'll still make it to Sango's village before nightfall.
A crow circled around the minotaur's remains and cawed happily at the meal that had just been prepared for him. "Ugh! I understand if you're hungry, but for the love of Kami at least drop us off in a tree first!" The bird seemed reluctant to leave his newfound prize until the tugging on his feathers became more insistant. Hopping over to a tree nearby the bird ruffled his feathers and shook his two occupants off and hopped back to his waiting feast.
"Well I never! Shoga-chan that bird of yours is as insolent as- Are you listening to me?"
Shoga stared at the girl riding the horse off into the distance. Why does that girl look so familiar? "That girl... Hmm?" she asked absent-mindedly.
Natsuki took her dear friend's hand into hers and patted it, "Thinking about Myoga again? We'll find him and bring him home, don't worry!"
That snapped Shoga from her thoughts, "Of course we will!"
Natsuki perked up, "Brilliant plan! We could take that girl to lure out Myoga!" she exclaimed.
"Myoga..." Shoga's eyebrows furrowed. She shot up, "I knew I knew that girl from somewhere! The priestess!" she cried.
Her friend gave her a confused look, "The priestess? Shoga-chan, you're not making sense."
"Of course I am! I told you about her, the girl that traveled with Inuyasha, that was her!"
"I thought she was dead, you know, really dead this time."
"No, no, no, no," Shoga shook her head furiously, "not that one. The one that was at our wedding when the louse ran away again!"
"Ooooh," her friend nodded, "I remember you telling me about her." She paused, "Didn't she disappear?"
Shoga shrugged her shoulders, "That's what they said, but there she was!" She clapped her hands happily, "Natsuki-chan, we'll just have to drop hints that she's here and to leave instructions that if anyone wants to know more to contact me! Myoga will be sure to come then!"
Natsuki gave her friend a bright smile and started jumping towards the poor crow, "Well? What are we waiting for?"
Myoga lounged under a shade tree digesting his lunch, when he felt the hairs on the back of his neck rise. He looked around, but nothing especially dangerous was nearby. I wonder what that was about...
WHACK! Daimasaru struck Shippo across the rear and pouted. "How am I supposed to practice if you're not gonna pay attention to me!" the little boy whined and leaned on his jo. Shippo turned around and put his hands on his hips, "I told you to give me a minute! I thought I smelled something strange... but it can't be her..."
The little boys eyes grew large, "Is a bad demon coming? I'll go tell mommy!" Daimasaru scrambled towards their hut calling out for his mother before Shippo could answer.
"What? No! Come back here!" Shippo called out as the boy disappeared inside, he sighed. There it is again! The scent is getting stronger! Momentarily forgetting about the little boy and his mother's wrath if there wasn't really something coming, he tore off to the gate to look down the winding road leading up to the village and stopped.
The sun setting in the west set the sky behind the woman ablaze in orange. She led a black horse behind her, the breeze blowing her short black hair gently.
"What are those funny pants called?" The young miko tousled his hair affectionately, "Jeans, Shippo. They're really comfortable!" He felt his eyes fill with tears, "It can't be..." he whispered.
He vaguely noted the scream Kilala gave before transforming into her full size.
"Stupid! You could've protected her! She was safe with us!" "Goddammit, Shippo! I did what I thought was best for her!"
Sango looked down at Shippo and put her hand on his shoulder, "Are you okay?"
The scent was coming from her! It had to be her! He broke away from Sango and yelled, "Mama!", before running down the road to the woman.
Sango looked shocked and reached for Miroku, holding on to his arm. When Shippo reached the woman, she kneeled down and hugged him tightly.
"How-"
Daimasaru reached up and tugged on Miroku's robes, "Is she a fox demon too, daddy? She's not going to be mad that he's been living here, is she?"
Miroku placed his free hand on his son's head, "No, son. She's a friend."
A: Inuyasha, at this point, doesn't know that Kagome is in his time again. He isn't anywhere near Kaede's village, so he wouldn't be able to smell her. I'll be getting to him soon!
I do not own any of the characters from the manga/anime Inuyasha.
