Royal Pain

“Kagome, you ain't going!” Inuyasha yelled.

Kagome huffed in aggravation. As soon as she got back last night, all she heard was Inuyasha's loud mouth. It was exceedingly understandable that he would have nothing to do with Kagome's agreement, but as much as she cherished his concern, he really needed to shut up!
She continued to pack up her possessions into her bulky yellow pack, realizing that she should have been done sooner. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was adamant on being ready when Sesshoumaru arrived. The thought of him being disappointed with her didn't sit well.
Kagome mused as she packed her items. It seemed like a totally ridiculous reason now why she had kissed Sesshoumaru. At the time, she had done it on impulse, and nothing more. The more she tried to come up with a deeper reason she came up empty. Maybe it was because in kissing him, there was no real attachment as on the other hand with Inuyasha, complications would be inevitable. She just wanted everything to go her way for once.

“Kagome-chan…are you sure?” Sango knelt by her and watched anxiously.

“Don't worry, He just wants a friend for Rin.” Kagome reassured her.

“Sure, and when she leaves, he'll hack you to tiny pieces with Toukujin and feed you to his dragon thingy” Inuyasha bit out.

“Thank you, Inuyasha, for such a graphic description of my future, but I don't think Sesshoumaru would go so low as to use Rin as an excuse to exact revenge.”

“Lady Kagome has a point Inuyasha…” Miroku said as a hand inched slowly to…

“Let me-*thud*-make a point hentai houshi.” Sango growled, hitting Miroku after being the target of his roaming hand.

“Look you guys…” Kagome stood up, finished packing. “ I know you are all worried, but trust me ok, I know what I'm doing.”

Inuyasha hid his face behind his bags and stood to the side silently. Kagome walked up to him and tugged at the front of his hakama.

“Inu…are you ok?”

Inuyasha looked up and stared at Kagome with such and intense look in his eyes that Kagome almost gasped in surprise.

“Kagome, you better come back to us in one piece. Got it?”

Kagome smiled at the desperate attempt at bravery Inuyasha put up. He was as worried about her as everyone else; he just had a hard time expressing it.

She grabbed his hand and squeezed it reassuringly.

“I'll come back, don't worry.”

They stayed like that for a few seconds longer before Inuyasha looked off behind her and growled low in his throat.
Kagome looked in the same direction to find Sesshoumaru walking slowly toward them. She sighed and, picking up her pack, walked off to join the yokai lord.

“Are you situated?” Sesshoumaru questioned, staring at her friends with a slightly visible amused look.

“Yes.” Kagome took one last look at her friends and waved goodbye.

She walked up to Sesshoumaru and nodded. Suddenly the ground below her began to soften. She looked down to find a cloud slowly forming under her, and soon enough the cloud was floating a few feet above the ground.

'Oh my god.....' Kagome didn't take into consideration thier mode of transportation, but she honestly never expected to fly to the Western Lands.
The cloud gave a great lurch as it began to ascend and Kagome squealed, jumping over to Sesshoumaru and latching onto his sleeve. Sesshoumaru looked down at her in question.
"I'm no coward!" Kagome bit out at him. She felt as if she would be repeating this a lot.
"Of course not."

Inuyasha watched as Kagome spoke with Sesshoumaru while they climbed into the air and just before they were out of sight, he could of sworn he saw his brother put his arm around Kagome.

Once they were high in the sky, Kagome took a quick glance over the side of the cloud. The ground below was almost non-existant, and Kagome recoiled at the thought of going 'splat'. She borrowed into Sesshoumaru's side as fear overtook her. The yokai wrapped an arm around her and whispered into her ear.

"I will not let you fall."

He was so sure, and confident in what he said, that Kagome began to feel safe almost instantly. Then again...

"Wait a minute..." Kagome whispered suspiciously. "What are you playing at fluffly?"

Unfortunately for her, the statement was not lost on him.

"If I can remember correctly, you are the one who played that human game last night." kagome blushed at this. "And as for fluffly, i would sooner let you fall than allow you to continue to address me as such."

Kagome stared at him wide eyed and tightened her grip on his arm.

“H-Hey…you wouldn't really…would you?” she asked fearfully.

The only reaction she got was an arched eyebrow, which did nothing to calm her fears. She took another fleeting look at the almost non-existent ground, and then looked back at him.

“But you were the one who started the game in the first place…” she started a little calmer than before. “…And if it's such a human game than a high ranking yokai such as yourself should not have any knowledge of it.”

“ Any high ranking yokai should know even the slightest of details.” He stated emotionlessly.

“Not one's that do not pertain to politics, I'm sure.” Kagome bit out ruffled. “ Just admit it, you played tag with Rin!”

“This Sesshoumaru does not play such ridiculous games with any humans.”

“But I'm sure `This Sesshoumaru' would play tag with his ward.” She grinned. “C'mon, she's the closest thing you have to family right now, since you obviously don't consider Inuyasha as any relation to you.”

“You are trying my patience miko”

“That's only because I'm hitting a sore spot…you shouldn't hide the fact that you care for her, she obviously doesn't.”

Kagome looked out to the castle that was coming into view. She was a little sad...she never had a father of her own, and thinking hard on it, Kagome was a little jealous of the girl. A least she had a father figure now. Then again she felt a little guiltly considering the state in which the yokai and orphan found one another.

“Besides…your all she's got.”

Once touching down at the foot of the castle, Rin and Jaken immediately surrounded them.

“Lord Sesshoumaru, You must see what Rin has done with the flowers we picked on the way home yesterday-”
“Lord Sesshoumaru, this lowly servant feared that you would be delayed, are you unharmed? OH but of course you are-”

Kagome watched as Sesshoumaru took in all the information they were throwing at him with more patience then she could ever have given him credit for. Though once she considered the facts, being a lord would require an overabundance of patients, so it would be only natural for him to be thus.
She had expected him to be callous or petulant in his own surroundings, but here he was almost…human. She watched the slight tilt of his head as he listened to the wards, and the light pat of his hand to Rin's brow. In this type of light, were she not a witness to his much darker side, she would have guessed him to be a benevolent lord. To say he wasn't would have been excessive, but he did have his…days.

“Oh, Lady Kagome, how are you?” Rin chirped, noticing her for the first time

“Genki desu!” she smiled. “ How are you Rin?”

“Rin is good, are you really going to stay with us” her curiosity was adorable, and Kagome felt her grin widen and her antics.

“For a while, yes.” She nodded.

“Now Rin can make flower necklaces with you…” she went up to whisper into Kagome's ear, but failed terribly and said it loudly enough for everyone to hear.
“Jaken isn't very good at it!”

Kagome laughed with Rin as Jaken huffed in aggravation.

“Now listen here you insolent little brat! You are here because-“

Jaken continued to babble at Rin, who in turn laughed and poked fun at the little toad, but Kagome didn't hear. She had made the mistake of looking up to catch the eyes of the yokai lord, who at the moment had such intensity about his features, that Kagome felt distraught. The emotions playing in his eyes were so mixed up that they were indistinguishable. A frown marred his features as if he was concentrating hard: trying to look straight into her soul.

“Lord Sesshoumaru! Come see what Rin has made!” Rin tugged at his sleeve, breaking whatever spell he had been under. Now, with his emotionless mask in place, he walked to the castle, Rin leading the way.

Kagome sighed. She would never truly understand this puzzle of a yokai, but at least she knew a little more than she did before. With that, she slowly made her way up the stone path leading to the towering castle Thus began her first day in the home of the western lord.
