Chapter 20: Explanations
Inuyasha swallowed nervously, and looked down at the floor before he began his explanation. "The thing with Koga wasn't my fault, really. He was the one that came to me and started everything."
"He came one night after you had gone back to your home." Inuyasha swallowed again and continued. "You had been in heat before you left, and that's what had brought Koga to the well. Your scent had been affecting me as well, and that's why I had actually let you go home. I didn't want to do anything to you." he said, ducking his head sadly and flattening his ears back against his head.
"At first, I didn't want to, but your scent was still all over the place and I couldn't think straight. And then Koga started saying things and they really made sense to me, or whatever part of me that was thinking at the time. He said that it would be okay for us to," he stopped and blushed, "to do what we did. I guess he was affected by your scent too."
Inuyasha stopped for a minute, and took deep breaths and looked like he was upset about something. "The next thing I knew, he had grabbed me and we were kissing. The rest is really hazy." Inuyasha said, not bothering to look at the other beings in the room. "I woke up the next morning, lying next to Koga and we were only covered with my shirt. I got up and got dressed, and left as quick as I could."
"He found me the next time you left. I think he purposely waited until you left. Koga came back and said that he had run into a female that had been in heat and that if I didn't let him do what he wanted, he would tell you what had happen, only change who I had been with and that you would believe him and not a half-breed like me." Inuyasha flattened his already flat ears down on his head even more and his voice conveyed his sorrow and selfloathing.
"I didn't think there was anything else that I could do, so I just let him do what he wanted. I had thought that he would just use me and leave, but he said that it wasn't fair for him to have all the fun." Inuyasha, paused, obviously disturbed by what happened.
Kagome noticed the look on his face and instantly had an idea of what Koga had done. "It's okay, Inuyasha. You don't have to tell me everything." she said, her voice calm and soothing. "Besides, I have an idea of what he did." she told the quivering hanyou.
Inuyasha nodded, still not looking at her, but relieved that he did not have to tell her all the details. He then continued his explanation. "Then after that, he would come whenever he would run into a female that was in heat and each time he showed up, he wouldn't leave until I came too." Inuyasha said the last part very quietly. "He even started coming while you were still around. He was showing up so often, I began to think he would come just because he felt like it. And no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't help but enjoy it a little." Inuyasha paused for a bit. "After a while, it turned into what you saw that night."
Kagome looked worried when Inuyasha stopped talking and huddled in on himself. She got really worried about him when she heard a faint whimper escape from his huddled form. She gave Sesshomaru's hand a quick squeeze before she released it and went over to comfort Inuyasha. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and soothingly petted his hair.
Inuyasha turned away from her. "Don't." he said in a depressed voice. "I don't deserve to be touched by you." he said with a whimper.
"Don't be silly. You shouldn't feel guilty about it. It wasn't something you could control." Kagome said, still running her fingers soothingly through his hair.
Inuyasha looked at her. "I could have stopped him." he said, angry at his weakness. He moved out of her reach and dropped his head again, his shoulders shaking with a silent sob. "And then I didn't stop him, and I started to like it." he said, his voice strained.
Kagome looked back at Sesshomaru, concern shining brightly in her eyes. She turned back to Inuyasha. "That's still not your fault. He could have picked anyone, you were just the closest person to him. I don't blame you for it. I forgive you, Inuyasha. Don't worry about it." Kagome told him. She reached out a hand to his shaking shoulder and let it rest there for a minute. She watched as his shoulders slowly stopped shaking and squared up. That was her cue that he had relaxed and she should move back to Sesshomaru's side.
Kagome quickly moved back to her mate's side and set her hand on his knee. She had seen the slight look of jealousy cross his face when she had looked to him. She smiled when he placed his hand over her own and intertwined their fingers together. Kagome glanced at Sesshomaru out of the corner of her eye and resolved to talk to him later. She looked back to Inuyasha and waited for him to continue his explanation.
"After you saw us, we switched position and sometime Kikyo showed up. Neither of us expected her, but we were too wrapped up in what we were doing and she just joined in." Inuyasha explained to them further. He then looked up at Kagome. "I'm guessing you know about Naraku, too." he said, looking her in the eye for the first time since he had shown up. He saw Kagome nod and then looked down again. "I kind of figured. I haven't sensed him in a while. He joined us later, but we didn't know it was him. He had disguised himself as you. He even masked his scent. It didn't help any that your scent lingered from when you saw us, only we didn't know that you had been there." Inuyasha glared at the floor, looking very guilty.
Kagome understood now, or at least as well as she could. It hadn't been anything that he had done by choice. She just couldn't stay mad at him anymore. She looked to Sesshomaru, question in her eyes, and saw him nod almost imperceptively. Kagome's eyes slid back over to Inuyasha.
"You can stay here for a while, if you want." Kagome told him, her voice quiet.
Inuyasha looked up and stared at the pair, completely amazed. He looked to Sesshomaru, disbelieving that he would agree with what Kagome had said.
Sesshomaru had to fight the urge to sigh, exasperated. "You may stay here if you so wish." the demon lord said, his voice sounding bored. He saw Inuyasha agree to stay with a nod. "You may remain here and continue eating and I will send a servant later to show you to a room that you may rest in." Sesshomaru told him while standing to leave.
Kagome stood alongside Sesshomaru and looked at Inuyasha. "I'll see you at dinner, Inuyasha." Kagome told him. She waited long enough to see him nod and then followed Sesshomaru out of the room. She silently followed him down the hall for a while. She followed him down several hallways and eventually into a room that resemble the library, only smaller. Kagome watched him sit down on one side of a low table and she sat herself down opposite of him.
"Are you mad at me?" Kagome asked after sitting in silence for several minutes.
Sesshomaru looked up from the parchment that he had been reading from. He was surprised that she would think that, even though he had been slightly jealous of her attention to the hanyou. He stood up and walked around the table, his eyes never leaving hers, and sat down right in front of her. "Why would I be mad at you?" he asked, his voice as cold and calm as ever.
"Because I was being so nice to Inuyasha." Kagome said, her voice trembling a bit. "I know you don't like him, and haven't for a long time, for things that I don't even know about, but I do know that it can't just be because he has human blood in him." Kagome said quietly as she lowered her eyes to her hands fiddling in her lap.
Sesshomaru looked at her, once again reassured that he had most definately made the right choice for his mate. "You are right about one thing. I don't like Inuyasha, and it is more than just the human blood. But I am not mad at you in anyway." Sesshomaru said as he brought her into his lap. He put her head on his shoulder and ran his fingers through her hair until he felt her relax against his body. Sesshomaru wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his head against hers, nuzzling his nose into her hair, loving the way that it felt against his skin.
"Can I ask you a question?" Kagome asked, her voice quiet and calm.
Sesshomaru smirked into her hair. "You just asked me a question." he said, smiling when Kagome elbowed him the stomach. "What is your question?" he asked.
"Why have you allowed Raven to stay here after she attacked and injured you and Jaken?" she inquired.
"She had a very good reason." Sesshomaru said.
Kagome lifted her head and looked him in the eye. "She had a good reason to attack you two for no reason and then leave you for dead.?" she asked, disbelief apparent in her vioce.
"That is not what I mean. She had a good reason for her actions and she did not leave me for dead. When she attacked us, Jaken and myself were no where near the castle. Yet when you found us, we were nearby. She brought us so that we would be found easily. If you wish for more information, you will have to speak with her yourself." Sesshomaru explained to her.
Kagome just sat in his lap, taking in what he had said. "I guess so." she said. She released a contented sigh and snuggled deeper into Sesshomaru's embrace. They remained like that for a long time and appeared to be sleeping, except that occasionally one or the other would mummer an endearment to the other.
A soft knock from the doorway interrupted them. Kagome blushed and got off of Sesshomaru's lap and sat at his side.
"Come in." Sesshomaru said, his voice commanding.
"Sesshomaru-sama, forgive my intrusion, please." Raven said as she entered the study and bowed from the waist. "Rosuto-san wished me to inform you that she would be giving the children a bath and then putting them down for a nap since they were tired." she said, standing up and looking at the couple sitting together on the floor.
Sesshomaru nodded and Raven turned to leave, but Kagome stood up and followed her.
"Raven-san, could we talk?" Kagome asked as she caught up with the female youkai.
Raven stopped and turned to look at Kagome and immediately bowed low on the floor. "Milady, I'm sorry for my behavior when we first met. I should not have acted that way, but I have not had many good experiences with humans." Raven explained, still on the floor.
Kagome stared at her, shocked by her change in attitude. Then Kagome reached down and helped her up. "Consider it forgotten." Kagome said with a smile. "I still wish to speak to you about a few things though." she told Raven once she was back on her feet.
Raven looked at her, a little shocked at how easily the miko would forgive her. She nodded, dumbfounded. "Okay." she agreed.
Kagome grinned. "Good. Let's go talk in the hot springs." she said, grabbing her hand and heading towards their destination. Kagome stopped by each of their rooms, getting them each a clean kimono to wear after their bath.
After they had settled into the hot water, Raven looked to Kagome. "What did you want to talk to me about, Milady?" she asked, her eyes downcast.
Kagome looked at her and smiled. "First of all, you don't have to call me 'milady.' In fact, I would prefer it if you didn't. Just call me Kagome." she said, shaking her head when Raven looked at her shocked. "I mainly wanted to talk to you about why you attacked Sesshomaru and Jaken." Kagome told her.
Raven looked down. "I'm sorry about that, too. I knew I wouldn't be able to defeat him in a fair fight." Raven said, intently watching her hands beneath the water.
Kagome looked at her confused. "What does that have to do with anything?" she asked.
"When I was young my parents were murdered in front of me. As I grew up, I had to take care of myself. Then, when I came of age, men of all types would try to court me, but they were all weaker than myself, and I didn't want to be mated to someone that was weak. I didn't want what happened to my parents to happen to me. So I swore I would never mate with a male unless he could defeat me in a fight." Raven explained. "But I didn't want to mate with Sesshomaru-sama even though the other lords were pressuring me to do so." she said, her voice low and sad.
"So you were the one that the lords were talking about." Kagome said, sounding thoughtful. Raven looked up at her, confused and she saw the look. "When the lords were here, they said that if Sesshomaru didn't choose a mate, they would pick one for him. It was you." Kagome told her.
Raven nodded and then went back to watching her hands. "I didn't want to mate with him and I knew I would never have a chance at defeating him, so that is why I attacked him in the manner that I did." Raven said, her voice sounding a little depressed.
Kagome moved over closer and put a hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry about it. He understands it or else he wouldn't have let you stay here." Kagome reassured her. "And now that I know, you are welcome to stay here as long as you like." she told her. They spoke for a while longer of their past's, beginning to understand the other a little better as time past.
After their talk had quieted, Raven moved to get out, but stopped just before she completely exited the water. "You are not going to get out?" she asked, confused at the girls desire to stay in the water longer.
Kagome shook her head. "No, I'm going to stay in here for a while longer." she said, sinking further into the water.
Raven shrugged as she got out and quickly dried off and got dressed. "As you wish." she said as she left.
Kagome relaxed, thinking about the weird twist that her life had taken. She had completed the Shikon no Tama, mated with Sesshomaru, and felt closer to some of her youkai friends than she was to most of her human friends from what was suppose to be her time. Kagome quickly crossed her arms over her chest when she heard the door to the springs open and then close. She looked up and gasped when she saw Sesshomaru taking off his kimono through the steam that the hot water was creating. She watched him walk to the spring she was in, but looked away with a blush staining her cheeks as he got in.
