The meadow Kagome had been training in was dead silent after Sango's proclamation. Nothing moved, even the wind had stopped. Inuyasha painfully got into a sitting position, barely able to tell who had saved him while Kagome reached out to stop his ascent staring at Sango in confusion.

Ransetsu began to chuckle, the chuckle turning into raucous laughter. “You actually think you can kill me?!” He roared, all laughter gone. Sango glared at him.

“I will kill you. You abandoned the village and killed many. You should've died when we caught you. I will rectify that mistake!” She took a step forward spinning and released her weapon. It spun viciously as it zeroed in on Ransetsu.

He grinned and leapt up in the air to avoid it, but instead the weapon's path curved and followed him up. “Shit!” He cursed and slammed his spear into it, barely diverting it away.

He landed on his back having been thrown off-balance when he deflected the boomerang. He leapt up and turned angry eyes on Sango who now stood in front of Inuyasha and Kagome, back to him.

“Here.” She said holding out a vial of bluish liquid. “This'll counter the poison on his blade.” Kagome took it nodding and handed it to Inuyasha.

Furious at his opponent arrogantly turning her back on him, Ransetsu charged spear point leveled at her. The boomerang whizzed by him to return to Sango. She raised her hand and caught it without turning around..

Sango spun around and hurled it. He was barely able to avoid it by jumping to the side and took a small leg wound from the weapon's edge.

“I'll take him down.” Sango said angrily. “He has betrayed my village numerous times and therefore it is my duty to slay him. Please stay out of it.” Inuyasha grunted as he uncorked the bottle and drained it.

“Have it your way.” He said, finishing the antidote. “Just kill him, don't get fancy.” Sango nodded and caught her returning weapon before facing Ransetsu again.

`She…Who is she?' Ransetsu thought madly. `To foresee my movements and control a throwing weapon flawlessly…how?'

“Prepare to die!” Sango roared drawing her sword into her right hand while using her left to brandish her boomerang like a shield. The two charged.

“My lord, all has been done as you requested.” The king of the south nodded grimly at his vassal's words. “The populace has been evacuated to the west along with what's left of the army. It is time for you to leave.”

“No, I can not do that.” He said looking off over his kingdom. “If I did, all that you see here would be lost forever…”

“My lord? What are you saying?” The vassal asked worriedly.

“Those bastards want me. If I flee with the others they will follow and kill everyone and destroy the south forever. I will remain here to face them.” He said solemnly walking away from the veranda of his room to his war closet.

The vassal opened his mouth to object but was interrupted by a loud explosion off in the distance. “The main gate! Has it fallen!?”

“Yes…”He said slowly. “Go now, I shall stand with my kingdom…” He opened the closet to reveal a giant battle axe and armour. “…to the bitter end.” Seeing the vassal's hesitation he added, “That is an order!”

The vassal nodded sadly. “I'm sorry we could not defend from the east my lord.”
“No, we never had a chance. That east brat has the evil sword… this war was over with his appearance.” He said thinking back to the scenes of yesterday's battle.

They had taken up a defensive position a couple miles from the main gate. The battle had been going in the South's favour until Kouga showed up. He tore through their ranks like a razorblade and turned the whole battle around. The south was decimated.

They had retreated behind their walls but the king knew it was only a matter of time before the gate fell and they were overrun. He had decided to send all the surviving citizens and military out secretly towards the west.

“But sir…If we didn't have a chance then what chance does the west have?” The king laughed softly.

“You forget who sits on the throne…I have complete faith in him.” He said with a smile. “Plus there is the prince.”

“But sir…The prince disappeared a long time ago…he's probably dead.”

He shook his head. “The sons of the great dog demon do not die easily. If he hears of his country's plight, he will return. Now go, you have stayed long enough.” The vassal nodded, close to tears, and turned to go. “Wait…”

“Yes my lord?” The vassal asked turning back around.

“Please… Tell my Rin what I have done and tell her…that I'm sorry. It will be the last thing that I ask of you.” The lord said looking down. Out of all the people who would mourn and miss him, his daughter would do so the most. The vassal nodded before turning and leaving.

Sango cleanly dodged a spear thrust and stabbed with her sword. Ransetsu crouched, the sword passing just over his shoulder and rammed her. She fell to the ground winded and barely managed to roll out of the way of a downward killing strike.

“Heh, you're fast. I'll give you that much.” He said as he tugged his spear out of the ground. “But you're still weak. Just like your village.” Sango let out what sounded like one of Inuyasha's snarls and got back into a fighting stance, boomerang-shield forward.

“Silence! You're the one who's weak! Or did you forget it was my village that caught you and defeated your pathetic bandit brigade?” She smirked at the visible twitch on his face.

“I'll shut you up for good!” He roared and charged swinging his spear around. She rolled to the side out of the way before launching at him sword aimed at his throat. He moved out of the sword's path and grabbed her arm.

“Die!” He roared and threw her with all his might against a tree. There was a sickening crunch as she hit it and fell to the ground.

“Shit…” She breathed as pain overtook her. By the feel of it she had a few cracked ribs and some bleeding. Her vision began to blur and she lost sight of him. He lunged forward, grabbed her by the throat and lifted her up. Her sword fell uselessly into the ground below her.

“Sango!” Kagome called out. She moved to help but Inuyasha grabbed her and yanked her back.

“Stop Kagome, let her finish this.” He said gruffly, still a little off from the toxin's effects.

“What are you talking about?!” She screeched and turned to look back at her friend as she struggled to breathe. “She's going to…”

“Enough!” He barked and she jumped. “She'll be fine. She's stronger than most pathetic humans.” Kagome couldn't speak. Sango was dying and he told her to just watch?!

She was about to scream at him some more but stopped when she saw him look back at Sango his eyes showing something very odd. `He's worried about her?' She looked back at the battle deciding on a whim to both trust him and have faith in her.

“Heh! Looks like your friends are content to see you die!” Ransetsu said grinning. Sango smiled weakly.

“No…” She got out. “They…know…I'll…win …” Ransetsu snorted.

“Just hurry up and die!” He squeezed and she wheezed as darkness began to fill her head.

“No…” A voice inside her head said. Images came back to her. Of her friends, of her brother, of her parents, of her enemy… “I can't…die yet…”

Her eyes shot open full of determination. She brought her feet together around the sword and pulled it out of the ground. In one last-ditch effort, she swung her feet backwards and with all her remaining strength, rammed it up underneath and behind Ransetsu's ribs.

His expression went from smug to pained in two seconds flat. He coughed and blood splattered against Sango's face as his grip loosened. She fell to her hands and knees, greedily gulping in air. After a few more seconds, he went rigid and fell to the ground beside her, dead.

“Sango!” She looked up to see Kagome scream her name and run over to her. As soon as she got to her she fell to her knees and hugged her friend, crying her eyes out.

“Ka…gome…”Sango said slowly.

“You're alright, thank god.” She said crying into her shoulder. Sango patted her back.

“I won't be…if you keep…squeezing me…” She said grinning slightly. Kagome gasped and pulled back.

“Sorry.” She apologized. Inuyasha walked over.

“Geez, you sure cry over nothing. She's alright isn't she?” He said scowling.

“Hey! I was worried!” She glared at the half-demon. “You were too…”

“Keh! Sure, whatever…” He said crouching to the ground and picking Sango up to put her on his back. “Come on! Let's go back before she really does die.”
