Chapter 27

Erupting Tides/Alternate Ending

"Kagome?" Sango opened her front door hoping to find her best friend. Instead, she found the man she had been avoiding for a few days. "Miroku, what are you doing here?"

Holding a daisy out to her, he gave her a sheepish smile before answering, "I heard you went home early…I just wanted to make sure you were feeling alright."

"I was just worried about Kagome…she went to pick up her test results from the doctor during lunch, and she never came back." Sango explained, stepping aside, so that Miroku could come inside. She accepted the daisy as Miroku moved into the living room. He smiled when he saw a two tailed kitten napping on the couch.

"I see you two are getting along."

"She's really docile…hard not to." Sango smiled. "Thank you."

"What did you name her?"

"Kirara."

"That's a good name."

"I thought so."

There was a brief moment of silence as the two were unsure how to proceed.

"Kagome went to the doctor?" Miroku finally broke the silence too scared to move into dangerous territory.

"I finally convinced her to get something for the nausea, and the doctor decided to run some tests. She was supposed to pick them up and come right back, but she never did." Sango replied worriedly. "I was hoping she came back here."

"Isn't Kagome's doctor near Tokyo Park?"

"Not too far, why?"

"Inu Yasha and I met there for lunch today…there is the possibility the two ran into each other."

"There is also the possibility that she was run over by a truck!" Sango protested as she crossed her arms defensively in front of her. Instinctively, her boyfriend took a step forward and held her tight.

"Like a truck could knock out our Kagome." Sango couldn't help but laugh and relax into his embrace. "I've missed you." Miroku spoke after some time.

"I've missed you too." Sango confessed.

"I don't like being apart from you."

"You only have yourself to blame." Sango spoke as she stepped away from him.

"I know…I screwed up. And, I can't guarantee that I'll never screw up again, but, I can promise to try not to. I can also promise not to listen to any more of Higurashi-sama's crazy ideas or to meddle in anyone's love life." Miroku raised his right hand as he spoke.

"That's all I ask." Sango smiled. Miroku lowered his hand and put them in his pockets.

"I know that I'm not perfect, but I do love you. If there's something this time apart has taught me is that my life without you, isn't worth living. I love you and…and…" Miroku kept searching his pockets as his girlfriend looked on with a sly smile on her face.

"And?" She pressed.

"And…and…" He tried the inside pockets of his suit.

"Miroku, don't tell me you lost something!" The mirth in her voice caused him to look up. She held a black velvet box in her hand. He smiled. This was just like her.

"Can't you ever let me surprise you?"

"Is it my fault you're so predictable? You always beg forgiveness in the same manner: first flowers followed by something unpredictable, and when that fails, jewelry. And you always give it with a big over the top speech. So what did you get me?" Sango asked as Miroku took the box from her.

"This isn't an apology. This is proof of my love." Sango gave him a confused look as he got down on one knee. "Sango Kizu, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?" Sango's jaw dropped as Miroku slipped the platinum emerald and diamond band on her finger. "No other woman will do. I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you."

"Miroku…" She gasped recognizing the ring. "Your grandmother's engagement ring?"

"I wanted to give you something that was a part of me…a traditional engagement ring didn't seem right."

"Oh, Miroku…" He smiled as her eyes became glassy. Standing up, he asked,

"So, will you become my wife?"

"Yes." She said nodding, unable to stop the tears from falling. "Yes." She pulled him down for a loving desperate kiss, as they tried to recover the lost time. Kirara purred happily as she concluded she would have more people around the house to pamper her.

The ground under his feet was frozen, but he didn't

care. This had been the spot where Kagome had shared

the stars with him. It was a special place. He could

still remember the sweetness of her scent, the pull of

his blood, her soft hands tracing her name on his

body…Heaven had given him an angel, and he had failed

to see it.

Miroku's words kept ringing in the back of his head.

It was true he didn't want to lose his inheritance; he had been a rich boy all his life, and he wasn't

sure he would know how to live his life worrying about

his income. But, then

again, he wasn't sure he could

live his life without Kagome. He smiled. They had

talked about children that day…what would their children

look like? Would they ever have children?

The way things were going… he didn't want to think

about that. No, he wanted to think about that night.

They had been chased away by a cop,

while Inu Yasha's

demon blood fluctuated. They had raced into the

woods, where he held her, and she promise he could

have her. Now, she wasn't letting him anywhere near

her.

"Who would keep my bed warmer at night?" Inu Yasha

wondered as a teenage couple walked by giggling. The

boy stopped near a tree and began to carve two sets of

initials. Inu Yasha pulled out his cell phone and

dialed a familiar number.

"I need to talk to you immediately."

.

"Kagome?" Kagura insisted as she tried to get the

young miko to talk. "Did you two have a

disagreement?" Kagome nodded because her tears were

too strong for her to formulate words. "Sweetheart,

everyone has disagreements. I'm sure the two of you

can work things out." Kagome shook her head and

managed to choke out,

"He-he lied." Kagura hugged the young girl tightly as

Sesshomaru's anger increased. He was reminded of a

conversation he and his brother had had earlier that

morning.

"You've been distracted lately. Problems at home?"

Sesshomaru inquired.

"I don't want to talk about it." Inu Yasha responded

without much energy. He had dark circles under his

eyes and mussed hair. Even his suit was wrinkled.

"I know Kagome hasn't been staying with you. What's

wrong?

I might be able to help."

"You can't! Look, this is something Kagome and I need

to resolve privately."

"Fine." Sesshomaru returned to his paperwork.

"Sesshomaru," he waited until his brother looked up

again, "thanks."

Sesshomaru shrugged before returning

to the morning reports.

It was no wonder that the idiot didn't want any help;

he had screwed up royally. "Kagome," Sesshomaru spoke

quietly as to not startle her, "did he…how did he

react to this?" Sesshomaru pointed to the papers she

was clutching tightly.

"He doesn't know…" She confessed. "We haven't been

talking."

Sesshomaru wanted to add to it, but decided not to

upset her anymore. At least the idiot of his brother

hadn't done what he thought he did. The only other

thing Sesshomaru could fathom she was crying over…

"Kagome, did you

two fight over what happened at your

engagement dinner?"

"It was nothing…" Kagome ended, realizing who she was talking to. "I'm sorry." She finished as she stood up to leave. Sesshomaru and Kagura tried to persuade her to stay and talk, but she was adamant about leaving.

"Do you think they will be alright?" Kagura asked after Kagome had retreated.

"I don't know." Sesshomaru confessed as he recognized the number on his caller ID.

It didn't take long for Kagome to wonder back to her secret place in the park. Her father had shared it with her, and she, in turn, had shared it with Inu Yasha. She smiled as she remembered that night. It had felt so good to lie on the ground with his head resting on her belly. The moon had been almost full and the sky shone with an

ethereal beauty. How she loved the way he would growl softy…almost purring! She loved it almost as much as she enjoyed his smile or his face when he was sleeping. He looked so young and helpless when he slept.

Then, there was the way he smirked. God, he was sexy when he smirked, and he knew it. Anytime he tried to seduce her, he had given her his classic smirk, and she would melt. It was a very dangerous power he had over her…

Kagome gasped, as a sudden realization came over her. He hadn't smirked on their wedding night…not after they declared their love. She closed her eyes as she remembered how soft and loving he had been, until his demon side had taken over. Marking was serious business…He marked her instinctively…He wanted her more than just a bedmate.

"I've been such an idiot." Kagome sighed as she sat where she and Inu Yasha had laid together a few months back. She wiped away her tears and took a

deep breath. "Sango was right…If I had just talked to him..."

She smiled as she felt hope for the first time, and before she had a chance to change her mind or coward out, she picked up her phone and dialed Inu Yasha's office. After the secretary told her he was still out on lunch with Miroku, she tried his cell phone.

"Inu Yasha…it's Kagome. We need to talk. Call me." As an afterthought she added, "I miss you."

She thought it was strange for her husband to have his phone turned off, but then again, Inu Yasha wasn't the most normal of people. She smiled. That was why she loved him. Feeling better than she had for the last week or so, she decided that waiting just wasn't for her.

"Hey Miroku."

"Kagome, where are you? Sango's been worried sick about you." Kagome smiled as she heard the said woman

in the background. They had made up.

"I went for a walk…listen, is Inu Yasha with you?"

"No, I haven't seen him since lunch." Kagome's heart skipped a beat.

"He hasn't gotten back to the office…do you have any idea where he might be?" There was a brief pause before he answered,

"Yeah, but you're not going to like it?"

"Miroku," Kagome warned.

"He believes that

by giving up the inheritance, you will forgive him."

"What? Why?"

"So that way he can prove to you that he married you for love and the money was just an added bonus."

"That idiot! Who gave him that idea."

"I-I don't know." Miroku swallowed hard, unsure what had caused the change in his friend. She said goodbye and started to race out of the park.

"Inu Yasha you baka!" Kagome screamed. "That idiot…That loving, perfect, wonderful man of an idiot." The guilt felt heavy in her heart as she tried to flag down a cab.

"What's wrong ma'am?" The driver dared to ask when she begged him to hurry. She felt weird, but somehow, the older ma'am ushered her a feeling of confidence and familiarity. When she caught a glimpse of his blue eyes in the review mirror she realized it was because they looked so much like her father's.

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you."

"Try me." Kagome smiled and told the driver the entire story as he maneuvered his way around the city.

"So, now you're mad he's going to give up the money that caused the problem between the two of you?" Kagome held on tight as they took another sharp turn, gaining the curses and horns screeches of a few other cars.

"You make it sound so bad! I just don't want him to give up anything because of me…I don't want him to have any regrets about us."

"I think it's a little too late, ma'am. I'm sure he's regretting not telling you about your grandfather. BAKA! Watch where you're going!" The cabdriver screamed as Kagome came crashing against his seat. She frantically searched for a seatbelt and bolted herself in. "Though, that argument was partly your fault."

"Excuse me?" Kagome looked up in surprise.

"Your husband is a hanyou, correct?"

"Yes."

"Well, any demon with the sense of smell could have told you the truth, and if you married a demon, that means you must hang out with a few of them."

"Yes, but…"

"No one told you because it wasn't there place, child. Your jii-chan had to tell you himself. Don't get me wrong. He should have been more persuasive, but he wasn't the only one that didn't tell you either."

"But it hurt more coming from him."

"I'm sure you not trusting him hurt him. Ma'am, you have to realize the marriage is based on trust, not lust or love."

"Nani?"

"Everyone says love is the basis for everything, it's not. I've been married 35 years, and in that time I have learned that loving my wife isn't enough to make our marriage work. It takes trust, and to trust, you have to put your heart at risk. You also have to work on it. You can't scream divorce every time he pushes the envelope because as a man he is going to make mistakes, and so will you. If my wife had reacted like you did the first time I lied about going to the bar with my friends, we wouldn't have our daughters today. When I look at them, I realize it was worth every sacrifice we made, which by the way miss, it isn't avoidable. Life demands sacrifices, and you and your husband will have to make them. You can't have a successful marriage with them."

"So love doesn't matter?" She smiled realizing they had made it

out of the city in one piece.

"It does, it makes the sacrifices worth while. If trust is the basis of a good marriage then, love is the fuel. It makes you keep working…If he loves you, he will never resent you for any sacrifice he makes, even giving up his inheritance. How much are we talking about here, a million or two?"

"Try a few billion, several properties around the world and forty-something percent of all the shares to Takahashi Incorporated."

"Damn, that's pushing it!" The man replied as he hit the gas again.

Inu Yasha arrived at his brother's estate in a foul

mood: A crazed cab driver had nearly run him off the road.

He didn't bother with formalities as he made his way

to his brother's office. As he touched the cold knob,

the severity of the situation hit him, but he wasn't

backing out now. He knew what he had to do.

"Don't you ever knock?" Sesshomaru asked without looking away from Kagura, who was sitting on his desk.

"This is important." Inu Yasha began. "When I'm done

talking, the part of you that is my brother will hate

me, but the part of you that is my rival will love

me."

Sesshomaru sat back, his brother having successfully

caught his attention.

Kagome rushed out of the cab and raced up the steps of the Western Lord's mansion. "Where's the idiot of my husband?" Kagome asked as she raced passed Jaken.

"With the Lord in the office." He replied, not surprised by the young girl's anxiety. Her scent told everything.

Kagome didn't

stop until after the door to the office was opened, and the three occupants turned to stare at her. She was at a loss of words. All the rushing and she hadn't prepared what she wanted to say.

"Kagome?" Inu Yasha looked at her confused.

"I've been trying to reach you for forty-five minutes!" She complained. Inu Yasha took in her scent, dumbstruck. It had changed. Was it another man? No…she smelled like her, only different. He stepped closer, relieved that she followed suit.

"I turned off my cell phone…I didn't want to be interrupted."

"This was an emergency." Kagome complained as she sensed the eyes of her in-laws upon them. She looked at their unreadable faces and turned to her husband. He looked

tired, worn and scared.

"Are you alright? Your scent is off." Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow at his mate, who shrugged in response.

"I'm fine." Kagome replied. The silence that followed was the picture of awkwardness. Neither knew how to proceed, so instinctively, Inu Yasha pulled her in for a tight hug. Kagome gasped, but soon melted into his embrace. He relaxed and inhaled her scent. He had smelled that change before, in a few women at the office, but he never questioned it. His youki stirred trying to ascertain the change in his would-be mate.

"We need to talk…in private." She whispered. He swallowed hard, not liking those words.

"I'm sorry." He whispered

back. "I know I screwed up."

"I know…that's why I came. You don't have to do this."

"You're a little too late for that, Kagome." Sesshomaru spoke up. "My brother just finished confessing everything." As the blow of his words hit her, Kagome's shut her eyes.

"Kagome?" Inu Yasha asked worriedly as his wife struggled to maintain her balance. It was too much for her to handle as her heart began to beat erratically. She didn't notice when Inu Yasha picked her up or when he moved her to a nearby couch. She did notice when he kissed her temple and nursed his mark. His lips pressed so innocently against the flesh of her neck made the nausea and pain dissipate immediately. She moaned in relief, as he rubbed her back. "Love, are you alright?" He asked again, getting annoyed by not being able to indentify the difference in her scent.

"Yes…the doctor said it was normal."

"Doctor? Are you sick?"

"No…" Kagome shook her head and looked into her husband's worried eyes.

"You're an idiot!" Sesshomaru grumbled from his spot by the couch. Kagura had also

moved to their side, concern showing in her eyes.

"Keh." Inu Yasha turned to his wife, and examined her carefully. Her eyes had some of their old sparkle, and even though worn, she did have a glow to her. Deciding that she didn't smell sick, he ventured to talk. With witnesses around, she wouldn't kill him. "I had to show you one way or another that I loved you. I don't care about the money or the stock or anything else, but you."

"But, you have…I was too mad to realize it then. It took some time, a lot of tears, but I came to the conclusion that even though you were an idiot…you are my idiot."

"At least one of them gets it!" Sesshomaru mumbled as his brother shot him an angry glare.

"Can we get some privacy here?"

"This is my office, but if you prefer, you can take it into one of the

guestrooms." Sesshomaru shot back.

Kagome blushed at the insinuation, while Inu Yasha rolled his eyes. "Get your head out of the gutter. Your woman needs rest." Sesshomaru replied, though his aggravation did not show. Taking a look at his watch, he continued, "And you should check back with the office. Having both of us out of sight could lead to negative workflow."

"What

for? I lost the inheritance, remember? The business is no longer any of my responsibility."

"I hate to break it to you, brother, but you truly are an idiot."

Inu Yasha's eyes bled red as he was very tempted to rip his brother's throat, but the woman resting on his lap was much more tempting. Sesshomaru never lost his stoic façade, as he continued,

"From what you told me, the two of you started dating for the wrong reasons, but you fell in love by the time you married; therefore, fulfilling the stipulation set forth in father's will. You are still the co-primary shareholder, and therefore have responsibilities to fulfill."

Kagome and Inu Yasha stared at him in disbelief. "Do you really think I would risk my nephew's future on a technicality?"

"I can't believe you don't think Inu Yasha could survive in a different company!" Kagura complained. "And what makes you think it's a boy?"

"Instinct and scent."

"It's too soon to tell!" Both Kagome and Kagura complained.

"What are you all rambling about? What nephew? We don't have a nephew!"

Inu Yasha complained as he held tightly to his wife.

"You don't, but…" Kagome took her husband's hand and placed it over her lower abdomen. "Sesshomaru is a different story."

"You-you're pregnant?" Inu Yasha asked in disbelief, finally making sense of the change in her scent. Kagome nodded as Kagura led Sesshomaru out of the office.

"We-we're going to be parents?"

"Yes." Inu Yasha looked down at his large hand over her small belly. There was a little life there, a little part of him and her united for all eternity…like the atoms of two stars that exploded billions of years ago and came together to form this planet. Inu Yasha looked up at his wife in pure amazement. What a mysteriously wonderful thing this woman was! She looked small and fragile, but she was strong and determine and able to bare him a child. His child. He smiled with male pride. He had planted his seed in her, and…

"Wait a minute! How? I thought you were taking care of yourself!" The sudden fear that the news might be wrong enveloped him.

"I wasn't very good about taking the pill everyday. Add that to your stamina and the mark…"

"We're having a baby!" As the idea sunk in, Inu Yasha was filled with a mixture of joy, fear and awe.

"Inu Yasha, I still want to take things one step at a time…"

"Anything you want." He kissed his wife slowly enjoying the feel of her small body against his. Kagome yawned lightly before she smiled to her husband and said,

"Let's go home. I'm dying to get into bed."

"I'm dying to bed you, too." Inu Yasha joked as he helped her up. As he stood, he smiled gently at her before kissing her lips lovingly. The kiss grew as they both realized they would be able to share a lifetime together.
