InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Black Forest ❯ The Gray Shore ( Chapter 1 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Disclaimer: The characters belong to Rumiko Takahashi. The setting belongs to history. The overly-dramatic camera angle I am seeing in my head probably belongs to Ingmar Bergman.

The day was growing late and dark as Kagome wandered the gray shores of her cold homeland. The seas churned treacherously as always, but the turmoil had brought these lands great riches. She combed the sands looking for the pieces of precious stone that the waves continuously brought forth. She had found many good pieces today, but none of the color or clarity her grandfather wanted as a prize for the Templars.

It should not be so light as the golden sun, Kagome,” Grandfather warned. “Nor should it be as dark as the maple sap in winter.”

What color should I be looking for?”

You will know it when you see it.”

Kagome was pulled from her reminiscence by a sudden movement. A man, a Templar perhaps, was pulling himself out of the sea. He was battered, but beautiful. Long white hair nearly obscured the image of a blue crescent moon on his armor. In her shock, Kagome stood idly by as the man's eyes rolled into his head and he collapsed. It was not his appearance that had shocked her she realized as she ran to his side. It was his eyes.

His eyes were the color of Amber.

A/N: Hi all, and welcome to the Black Forest. This is a story told through a series of drabbles and one shots. While I have an over reaching plot line in mind, much of the inspiration for the individual “chapters” is coming from the weekly prompts at the Live Journal community dokuga(underscore)contest. This particular prompt was week #34 - Amber.

Amber, while only a semi-precious stone, helped in part to form the great economics that made the Knights Templar a force to be reckoned with.  While it was less esteemed than diamonds, it was certainly as desired, and much more available.  The Knights Templar, in addition to their activities in the Holy Land during the Crusades also established a strong foot hold in the former Soviet countries once known as Prussia.  Occurring naturally along the shores of the Baltic Sea, peasants spent generations just gathering the gems from the sand.  An occupation Kagome could have easily found herself employed in if the well traveled distance, as well as time.

As with any other author, I appreciate your reviews. Let me know how I am doing! Please! :D
