Chapter 3: Part 2

The ground began to shake, causing the group to go on full-alert. They could sense a demonic aura coming. Just then, a large snake youkai appeared from beneath them.

“This is my territory!” the youkai cried, hissing his “S's. “You are trespassing! You shall become my dinner! Miko with the shards, I shall both grow in strength and have a fine meal.” The youkai lunged for Kagome, and she barely dodged it as the snake tried to wrap her in its coils.

Well, I guess I'd better get back on my hard schedule tomorrow.

“Hey, what are you doing?” asked Souta.

“I'm just…thinking how hard it's going to be getting back on track with my other courses like Tai Kwan Do and archery. I have to get used to the schedule again. I mean, sure Marina and the others kept me on a tight one, but still, that was a bit different, you know.” These talents should come in handy whereever I might end up.

“You're thinking about going through the well, aren't you?” he asked with his arms crossed, directing the conversation himself.

“What makes you say that?” she asked back.

“Well, I don't know; let's make a list. One: your bag's packed with stuff that Kagome takes on her trips, plus more.” He took a quick peek into her gym bag. “Sheesh! What are you doing with your sword and stuff? You can't take that! It'll only slow you down!

“Uh, hello!” Baraku scowled. “Ever heard of protection? I know it'll slow me down, but they sometimes work much better than arrows, baka!”

“Whatever,” Souta rolled his eyes. “Anyways, number two: you've been going to the Westside Gym every day ever since Kagome left, which, I might add, is kind of a give-away, considering you have no fat to lose. You've been working three times as hard as you usually do with all your classes, too.

“And three: Every time you pass by the well, you stop whatever you're doing and just stare at it.” Souta finished, , his voice filled with sarcasm and his eyes thin.

“I--Inuyasha!” Kagome half-choked, half-cried out in pain as the snake tightened its coils around her while sinking its fangs into her side, injecting its toxic venom into her.

“Kagome!” the group shouted.

“Inuyasha,” a wicked voice drawled, “what will you do? If you don't do anything soon, she's going to become fodder for the youkai.”

“Who's there?” shouted Inuyasha. “Show yourself!”

The figure came closer and closer until the moonlight revealed who it was: it was Naraku and Kagura, casting their evil smirks on the gang.

“Well, Inuyasha,” Naraku chuckled, “are you just to let her die by suffocation, or will you try to save her and die from the barrier's flames?”

“Damn you to hell!” growled Inuyasha as he moved slowly towards Naraku.

“Snake,” he ordered, “release the girl.” The snake, fearing for its life, obeyed and went underground once more.

“Kagura!” he commanded. She took a step forward with an evil smile upon her face. Kagome was lying there, helpless to do anything; she was still recovering from the snake's poison.

“Kagome!” her friends shouted as they watched helplessly outside the barrier.

Kouga was sitting alongside a fire that his friends had built, cooking a boar he had caught earlier. They had decided to try meat cooked, just as their mate and sister suggested to them once before. Kouga was looking at the stars, once again thinking of Kagome.

Kagome, I love you so much! The stars remind me of your eyes. I miss you… I worry about you everyday. Kagome, I long to hold you in my arms. Everytime I think of you, my heart aches at the thought of being apart from your side, and my soul yearns to be with you once more. You'll forever be in my heart, Koi. No matter what happens, I'll always love and protect you as long as I'm alive. I swear it.

“Kouga? Kouga!” shouted Ginta, trying to get Kouga to snap out of his thoughts.

“What?” Kouga snapped back.

“What's wrong, Kouga?” he asked. “Worried about Kagome-nee again?”

“I'm always worrying about her,” he replied softly. Where are you, Koi? I'm here without you.

“Hey, don't worry,” Hakkaku said, sitting down. “Sister Kagome's strong. She can handle herself well enough. Besides, Inuyasha's there to protect her. He won't let anything happen to her.”

“Are you suggesting that everything's fine,” growled Kouga, glaring sharply at the two ookami youkai, “and that she's better off with the mutt?”

“No!” they quickly replied.

“I'm tired,” Kouga yawned, tired of the conversation and lying down to close his eyes. “I'm going to take a rest. Let me know when the food's ready.”

The sky got dark as the air became filled with the smell of toxic miasma. Out of nowhere, the sound of wind blades could be heard as the they hit flesh. Kouga was scouting nearby when he smelled Kagome's scent, delighted to be able to see her once again. He began to run to her. Just then, he heard something he never wanted to hear ever again: Kagome's pain-filled screams. He was by her side instantly.

“Kagome! Kagome, my love, can you hear me?” Kouga's cries filled the air at the sight of his love being bathed in her own blood as it seeped out of the numerous wounds on her body. “Kagome, please, say something…anything!” He pleaded, his voice filled with sadness and pain.

“Kou…Kouga.” Kagome whispered.

“Kagome! Koi, who did this to you?”

“Kouga, run!” she muttered. “Get…away. Kagura did…this, but I'll be fine.”

Just then, the sounds of evil laughter could be heard filling the air as Naraku and Kagura stepped from the shadows. Kouga's hate for them grew more, for they had injured his treasure, the one he loved with all his soul. He would make them pay for hurting his beloved.

“Get…away, Kouga!” she said.

“No! I won't leave you!” He wouldn't leave her behind, not now or ever. He loved her too much to let her be in pain. “Naraku, how dare you hurt her!” Kouga snarled, standing in front of her in order to shield her if need be.

“I just wanted to give her a gift: the gift of death.” Naraku cackled, signaling the demons to kill Kagome. I'll never let them hurt her!

Out of instinct to protect his mate, he ran to her, scooped her up, and ran to find Kagome help. “Do you want me to go after them?” asked Kagura.

“No need. I know where they're going: straight into my trap. It's about time that I rid myself of that miko.”

Kouga continued to run, trying to find help for his mortal love. He couldn't find anything that even remotely resembled a village, but still he ran to save her. He couldn't lose her! She was his will to live, and without her, he would soon die to be with her in the afterlife.

He spotted a cave and decided, against his better judgment, to rest there. He didn't like this cave, as it made him uneasy, but he didn't have much of a choice; Kagome's life was on the line. He walked inside with his precious cargo held tightly to him.

“Kouga…” she managed to ask in a weak voice, “where…are we?”

“A cave,” he replied softly. “Save your strength, Koi. You'll need it.”

“Kouga, you should've ran…and…left me behind.” She turned her head towards him.

“I'd rather die protecting you than leave you behind,” he answered sincerely.

“I'm only a mortal,” she said, smiling sadly. “We're born, grow old and then we die. It's a part of life, Kouga. Naraku's poison is getting stronger, and I'm not going to make it through the night.”

“Kagome, please!” he shouted through his tears. “Hold on just a bit longer! I won't let you die!”

“Isn't that sweet?” chuckled a sudden voice.

“Kagura!” Kouga snarled as he readied himself to act as his love's shield once more.

“Why don't you come out and play with me?” taunted Kagura. “Or do I have to come in there after you?” She began walking towards the mouth of the cave slowly, laughing an evil laugh. ”How the mighty have fallen! You'd rather protect that pathetic mortal than save yourself?” she taunted. “There's nowhere to run, and you're both going to die here! Dance of Blades!”

The cave was suddenly filled with wind blades coming quickly towards them. Kouga blocked the attack from harming Kagome with his body and was brought to his knees in the process.

“Kouga,” Kagome asked weakly, “are you alright?”

“My love,” he replied softly, “I'm going to protect you, no matter what. I'd die for you. I love you, my tenshi.”

“Kagura, this ends now!” he shouted as he turned from his love to face and charge at his enemy.

Now's my chance! they both mentally thought.

Kouga reached towards her and clawed at her form, tearing her apart.

“Youkai, now's the time!” she yelled. “Kill the mortal!” The youkai obeyed and began to make their advances toward the cave.

“No!” Kouga screamed in horror, racing to aid his precious tenshi. “Kagome!”

“You're not going anywhere, Ookami!” Kagura shouted. “Dance of the Dragon!” The twisters came head-on, blocking him from protecting her. He could only watch in horror as the youkai made their way towards the cave.

“Kouga! Kouga! KOUGA!” Kagome screamed as the youkai began devouring her alive.

“No!” he screamed in agony, watching the body of his love being ripped apart.

“Kouga, wake up!” shouted Ginta.

Kouga shot up from his resting place, dripping in sweat and gasping for air.

“Kouga, are you alright?” asked Hakkaku.

“Hai, I'll be fine,” he lied.

Kagome, that dream seemed too real. Are you in danger? That nightmare scared me… He began to sniff the air, hoping to pick up Kagome's scent, like always. Whenever he'd have a nightmare about her, he'd search for her calming scent.

He did pick up her smell, but that wasn't the only thing he picked up. He started to panic; he picked up the worst scents ever: Kagome's blood and Naraku. He shot up from his spot and turned to his two comrades.

“Stay here!” he ordered. They nodded as he took off towards his Kagome's scent, hoping the nightmare hadn't come true.
