Chapter 6: The plan:

Shippou thought it better to leave anything having to do with Inuyasha alone for the rest of the walk home. So instead, he chatted away about his friends and the little girl in the village he had a crush on. Though Shippou wouldn’t admit it, and blushed furiously while talking about her.

As they neared the village, right where bushes covered the view of Kaede and Kagome’s hut’s, Inuyasha stopped. “I have a surprise for you.”

“Oh, do you?” Kagome answered and smiled as if she never heard Shippou let it slip.

“You ready?” he asked with a rather goofy grin on his face.

Kagome smiled and nodded, as Shippou eagerly wiggled in her arms.

Slowly he walked, leading her, as Kaede’s hut came into view. Kagome spotted a piece of a hut that she had never seen before. Gradually the entire hut came into view. Inuyasha’s mate gasped as tears threatened to spill out of her eyes. There appeared to be rooms added on to what was once a one room hut. The new rooms made the hut T-shaped.

“Oh, Inuyasha! This is the best present anyone has ever given me,” Kagome said as she dropped the kit and threw her arms around a beaming Inuyasha’s neck. Kagome kissed him as tears fell from her eyes and down her cheeks.

“I’ll keep giving you gifts like this more often if that’s the thanks I’ll get,” Inuyasha said with a smile and a raised eye brow.

“Hey, I helped too!” Shippou yelled, jumping up and down, and pouting. Kagome picked him up and hugged him and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

“Thank you, Shippou.”

Shippou blushed and gave her a sheepish, “You’re welcome.”

In the main room of the hut things didn’t look too much different than before. The counters and cabinets, were still on the back wall. And the sitting cushions were still placed around the fire pit. In the left corner where Kagome’s “room” was, her futon was propped up against the wall, making it take on the appearance of a couch. The “couch” had a small hand carved red wood end table on either side of it.

The right side that used to be Shippou’s room, now held a small dinning table against the wall. Three new sitting cushions where placed around it. And on either side of the counters was a door.

Shippou jumped up and down, pulling on the hem of Kagome’s skirt. “Let me show you my room.” The boy’s “mother” followed him through the door on the right. Inside the room there was Shippou’s small futon on the right wall. On the opposite wall were the two chest, for his clothes and toys. On the back wall was a low desk with Shippou’s crayons and drawing paper. A small rug was placed in the middle of the floor.

“Oh Shippou! It’s very nice,” Kagome said as she patted the boy on the head. Shippou gave her very proud smile.

“I saved the best for last,” Inuyasha whispered with a smile and a twinkle in his eyes. Kagome walked out of Shippou’s new room and followed Inuyasha through the door on the left. On the left wall was a rather large new futon. On the back wall was a vanity with a small mirror. A small vase, with wild flowers in it, was placed on top of the vanity. On the right wall was Kagome’s chest and a small narrow table next to it, holding her soap baskets. On the same wall as the door was a low empty shelf.

“Inuyasha…” Kagome sniffled. “How did you get…?” She couldn’t speak past the lump in her throat from the joy that she felt.

Inuyasha finally set down the bags and box, and wrapped his arms around his miko’s waist. He kissed the top of her head as silent tears ran down her cheek.

“I had the villagers help me build it and I also helped the next village with getting rid of youkai, and did odd job’s to get the stuff.”

“Okaasan! I’m hungry! Did you bring me some Ramen?” came Shippou’s voice from the door.

“Keh! That’s mine, kit!” Inuyasha teased.

Inuyasha pretended to sleep as he held a deeply sleeping Kagome in his arms. The new futon was comfortable and warm enough that it could have been the reason for her deep sleep. But Inuyasha knew better. All the packing and unpacking, on top of other things, was the cause of the her exhaustion. Inuyasha wanted to, as the monk would say, ‘sanctify’ the new bed, but Kagome was just too tired. So many thoughts plagued his mind as he lay in the still darkness. Almost silently the door slid open. Inuyasha growled at the intruder.

“I can’t sleep, Inuyasha. I had another bad dream. Can I come in here?” came the hushed voice of Shippou.

“Keh. Common, runt. But don’t wake up Kagome.”

The kit tip toed to the futon and climbed in curling up to his ’mother’.

“Hey, Inuyasha. Why does Kagome smell…”

“She just does,” snapped Inuyasha quietly.

“Does that mean she’s going to…?”

“Yes.”

“Does she know?”

“No.”

“Are you going to tell her?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“It’s better this way. Trust me.”

“But…”

“She’ll like it better if she finds out herself. Now go to sleep.”

The kit snuggled closer to his mother and pondered the conversation he just had with his “father” till he fell sound asleep. When Inuyasha was content all the living things he cared about were at peace, he let himself drift off as well.

The next morning, Sango and Kagome decided to have some ’girl time’ with Kaede in her hut, after breakfast. Inuyasha opted to take Shipppou out for a hunting lesson as he didn‘t want to listen to the women chatter about “nothing.” The girls spent the day talking about the wedding that was sure to take place soon.

“So it’s settled then?” Kaede asked the bride to be.

“Yeah. We’ll have the ceremony here and then, like mamma said, we’ll have a private ceremony in my time. Conducted by Jii-chan of course,” Kagome replied.

“Are you sure you want to have the wedding in only one week?” Sango asked.

“Inuyasha sure seems to want to have it done as soon as possible.”

“I think that would be a wise decision,” Kaede remarked. Kagome looked a bit confused for a minute before Sango pulled her out of her curiosity.

“Oh, Kagome, I don’t know how I can thank you enough for the silk sheets. They’re beautiful,” Sango said as she touched the wood box that held the silk.

“You’re welcome,” Kagome said. She perked up as an ‘oh yeah’ look lit up her face. “I have to think of something to give to Inuyasha for a wedding gift.”

“I think you have already given him a priceless gift,” Kaede said.

Kagome was then a little embarrassed. Does she know I’ve ’given’ myself to Inuyasha? she thought but the old woman didn’t say a thing as she sipped her tea.

“What about a new haori and hakama?” Sango suggested.

“Oh that would be great! Oh wait, the cloth was made from a fire rat pelt. It’s like armor. I don’t think he would give it up for something that was less than that,” Kagome said.

“There is a legend,” Kaede began, gaining the girls attention. “There is a rat youkai that sleeps for a hundred years and then wakes to feed on spiritual powers for one year before hibernating again. He kills all that gets in his way. He is the black rat Ikinezumi. His name literally means ’spirit rat’. His hide possess the same principals as the fire rat, although this pelt would also reflect spiritual attacks. I believe he was sealed in the town that’s a day’s travel east from here. If my memory serves me right, he should be awakening soon.”

“That’s perfect! Sango, you and I could kill it and get the pelt and make a new haori and hakama for Inuyasha,” Kagome said with hopeful eyes.

“I think we could do it. After Naraku this should be nothing,” Sango replied.

“I should warn you. He is very fierce. Almost no attack will work on him,” Kaede warned.

“We’ll be okay, Kaede. Will you cover for me and Sango while we go?” Kagome asked.

“Aye, Child. I’ll do my best,” Kaede replied. “You two don’t get in over your heads.”

“We won‘t,” Sango said as she was dragged out of Kaede’s hut.

The girls made quick work of getting together some supplies and readying their weapons. Sango called Kirara and they were off to the neighboring village before Inuyasha nor Miroku suspected a thing.

Inuyasha and Shippou had been home since lunch time and were getting a little worried. Inuyasha lost the scent of Kagome at the front porch of their hut. Probably because they flew away on Kirara, and had been gone for hours before he got there. It was getting dark, and the lower the sun went the more pissed he got. Finally, with Shippou on his shoulder, Inuyasha stormed over to Kaede’s hut.

“Babaa!! You know some thing don’t you? Where the hell is my mate!”

“Inuyahsa. It’s so nice to see you too,” Kaede remarked.

“Cut the shit. Where did she go?” he demanded.

“She and lady Sango went to the village a day’s east to exterminate a youkai.” Kaede had no more desire to cover for the girls as she thought they were being reckless.

“SHE WHAT?! Stupid! Fuck! Shippou, stay here I’m going to get that stupid woman.” Inuyasha fumed.

“I want to go too,” Shippou said but it was too late as Inuyasha had dropped the kitsune and was gone.

“Aye, Shippou, It’s best you stay here,” Kaede told the boy, who hung his head in defeat.

As Kagome and Sango neared the village, they began to see red filling the night sky. “Come on, Kirara!” Sango told her fire cat youkai pet, urging the cat to move faster. Kirara roared in response and picked up speed.

As the burning huts of the village came into view, they could hear the villagers screaming. Kirara landed, and Kagome and Sango jumped off the back of the cat. They ran to face off with the Black Rat, bow and arrows and Hiraikotsu in hand.

That fucking, stupid wench! The youkai in him drove Inuyasha faster than he thought was possible. The overpowering instinct to protect, clouded the hanyou’s mind. The faster his feet pounded the ground, the more his youkai pushed its way out. Logical thinking was becoming obscure. Inuyasha’s eyes flashed red then back to gold. The only thing his youkai repeated in his mind was ‘protect mate’ and ‘punish mate.’

Gradually Inuyahsa, came back to himself as he pushed his youkai down. The smell of fire suddenly struck his nose, causing him to growl. As he continued to run, he could smell blood and the vile stench of rat. A hint of Kagome and Sango’s scents mixed in with the rat stink. Don’t get yourself killed, Kagome. Be safe.

**********

The giant rat directly in front of Kagome and Sango stood at least twelve feet tall on its hind legs. His fur was as black as the depths of hell. Blood red eyes cut deep in their souls. Ikinezumi’s enormous teeth chattered in anticipation of eating the two that stood before him. The women both took a fighting stance. “You’ll never hurt another village again!” Kagome yelled.

“Ku ku ku ku ku. You little girls wish to challenge this Ikinezumi? You are no match for I, the great spirit rat.” The rat hissed in a dark scratchy voice, that would have made even Naraku’s blood curdle.

“We’ll see about that,” argued Sango as she tightened her grip on her weapon.

Ikinezumi tilted his head and twitched his nose. “You…” he said looking at Kagome. “You are a miko, and a powerful one, are you not?”

“What’s it to you, vermin?” Kagome asked as she pulled the arrow back making the tension a little tighter.

“Ku ku ku ku. I shall eat you first for you power.” With that he began to charge. Kagome let her arrow fly, landing a lucky shot, right between the eyes, in a blinding flash of light. As the light faded, the rat was still stalking slowly toward them, completely untouched.

“Silly human. My hide it too strong for your pathetic spiritual arrows,” the rat said as he lunged at the girls. They dodged just as a clawed arm hit the ground between them.

“Hiraikotsu!” Sango threw her giant boomerang at the rat, who swiped at it with his tail and knocked it out of the sky. He spit a fire ball at the taijiya. Sango was scooped up just in time by Kirara. The fire cat landed next to Kagome and let her master off. Kagome drew another arrow and fired. The arrow hit in Ikinezumi’s side. The sprit rat looked over his shoulder and swiped his tail again and hit the two girls, throwing them across the ground. They landed a few yards away from each other. Ikinezumi turned and began to stalk at Kagome.

“Weak miko. You are finished now.”

“Get away from my mate, you fucking bastard!”

The rat lifted his head in the direction of the voice.

“Kaze no kizu!”
