Chapter Four:

Kagome's senses piqued long before her conscious mind became aware of her surroundings. Her ears picking up on the faint, sweet song of the birds. Her skin prickling with goose bumps as the cool ground of the well touched her bare arms. Her nose drinking in the nectar of life teeming in the forest. And when awareness finally took her and her mahogany eyes opened from their slumber, she saw a dream flicker before them. A dream of intense crimson, and shining silver, that paralyzed her with fear. Suddenly awake, Kagome scooted back until the wall stopped her escape. Panic rose, threatening to consume her. The figure clad in crimson walked two short steps towards her, then dropped to his haunches in bewildered annoyance.

“What the hell happened to you?” he asked with minor irritation.

Kagome's breathing became erratic as she saw the bare feet step closer to her. Then the voice carried to her, and Kagome looked up. Golden eyes greeted her. Terror overwhelming her, Kagome screamed before falling once again into the darkness.

The boy she once loved, the demon of her nightmares…how was he alive? She killed him by her own hand. Yet she saw him, very much alive, and sitting in the well next to her. The well! Why was she in the well? The well was a dark reminder of that last nightmarish day in the Sengoku Jidai. She's avoided it, only giving the slightest passing glance at the well house as she walked by outside. Yet she was here, not only in the well, but in the past. How did this happen? Kagome wracked her brain, trying to recall how she ended up here. All that she could remember was the gut wrenching agony and despair she felt over her lost friends and how her fatal choice brought about their demise. Then it all had gone black.

Taking a deep breath, Kagome opened her eyes. She could see the fiery clouds uf sunset or sunrise from beyond the mouth of the well. Turning her head to the side, she head to fight down the shudder she felt as she saw the Fire Rat robe beneath her. She was lying in Inuyasha's arms. He must have held her when she'd passed out. Kagome wanted to run from him, but forced herself to remain calm. Slowly extracting herself from Inuyasha's embrace she crept to the side of the well. Huddling in the opposite corner, she watched him sleeping. There was no sign of the monster he ahd become. This for all appearances was the Inuyasha she'd known, and loved. Gathering up her courage, she turned to climb from the well.

“Where do you think you're going wench?” Came the grumble behind her.

Kagome almost jumped out of her skin at the sound of his voice. Taking a deep breath, she slowly turned to face the hanyou. Inuyasha, still sitting on the well floor, looked up at her with minor irritation. “Well…”, came another grumble.

Flustered, and feeling trapped, Kagome took an involuntary step back, only to hit the soft earth of the well wall. In an instant Inuyasha was up and had crossed the few feet to grab her. Kagome screamed at his touch, and Inuyasha flinched. Pulling back slightly, he looked down at her. “Kagome, what's wrong? You screamed when you came through the well, and now you scream again. What the hell happened?”

Kagome scrunched her eyes shut, willing her body to stop shaking. Did he really not know what he'd done? For that matter, did it even happen? If she was in the Sengoku Jidai, had any of her memories happened? Kagome bit her lip as she looked up into Inuyasha's golden eyes. There was only concern there, no sign of the dark monster he'd become. Not understanding what was happening, Kagome muttered a reply. “I….I don't know….what's going…on.”

Fear and concern in his heart, Inuyasha gently wiped a tear away as it slipped from Kagome's eye. Grabbing her up in his arms, he crouched down, then leapt from the well. Perhaps Keade would know how to better help.
