Chapter 3: Birthday Gifts and Secrets Revealed - Part 1

Arriving at the well, Kagome paused, unsure of what her cousins needed to do next. Releasing Koga's and Sesshomaru's hands, the twins approached the edge of the well before Shadow turned to the assembled travelers.

“Alright, what we need to happen is this: my sister and I will open the portal with a our powers and then Kagome will go through, from that point on we will continue to hold the gateway open so that the rest of you can pass through one by one. InuYasha, we need to you go last, which will effectively end our casting since you are the other person that can pass through freely. Everyone understand?” Shadow glanced around the clearing at each individual, waiting for acknowledgement from everyone before continuing. “Very well then. Sister, shall we?”

“Shadow, wait a moment,” Kagome suddenly said, “If InuYasha and I are the only ones that can travel through the well, then how did you, Death Strike, and Faele get here?”

Shadow smiled slightly, “I'll explain later, right now do you want to take your friends home with you or not?” Kagome just nodded as Sesshomaru and Koga glanced at each other confused. Sango, noting this, took the two full blooded youkai off to the side for a moment and explained that Kagome came from the future.

“NANI???” came their cry, causing the twins to chuckle as the three rejoined the rest of the group.

“Are we ready NOW?” Shadow asked again, and again everyone nodded. She sighed and turned to her sister, who stood across the well from her.

Death Strike nodded once before, moving as one, both girls stepped onto the corners of the well. Each had a foot on a different side of the well, this way the powers that they would be channeling would be dispersed evenly along the structure and back into the ground. With feet set approximately shoulder width apart, the sisters lifted their hands to the sky, palms heavenward. (For those who are Wiccan, you may recognize this as a goddess stance) Locking gazes one last time, they closed their eyes and lifted their voices in song….

“In a moment
Everything can change
Feel the wind on your shoulders…”

Shadow's voice echoed in the clearing, her voice ringing sweet and strong as the wind suddenly whistled around the group. Spinning around the clearing like it had a life of its own. It whipped Death Strikes long tresses as her own melodic tone rose to join in her sister's song….

“For a minute
All the world can wait
Let go of yesterday….”

Bright, shimmering blue light burst from the well and Kagome recognized it instantly. Smiling slightly, she looked to Shadow for her cue to go through. No sooner had she looked up then Shadow opened her now glowing silver eyes and nodded ever so slightly. No time to be afraid, and not wanting to disrupt whatever her cousins were doing, Kagome motioned for the others to follow her. As she leapt into the well, the song continued behind her…..

“Can ya hear it calling?
Can ya feel it in your soul?
Can ya trust this longing?
And take control…”

Miroku, clutching an ecstatic Shippo, leapt through the well, followed immediately by Sango, with Kirara in her arms. InuYasha turned to Koga and Sesshomaru as the wind went wild around them. The girls continued their song as all three demons looked around in shock….new voices had joined the song although there were no others present.

“Fly!
Open up the part of you
That wants to hide away
You can shine
Forget about the reasons”

Regaining himself, InuYasha motioned for Koga and Sesshomaru to jump through.

“Why you can't in life
And start to try
Cause it's your time
Time to fly!”

Sesshomaru leapt into the well, followed closely by Koga before Shadow and Death Strike turned their attention to InuYasha, their song momentarily paused. Subconsciously, he took a step back when he saw their eyes: all traces of their pupils and irises gone. They glowed like fire, one set silver…the other sapphire and InuYasha had to admit that their eyes made them the most beautiful, and the scariest, creatures he had ever seen. Smiling slightly, they completed their song as they too, leapt through the well….

“In a moment,
Everything can change….”

Their words rang through clearing as the wind suddenly died away, as if it had never been there. InuYasha shuddered as a chill ran down his spine. Why do I get the feeling they were trying to tell me something with that last line? He wondered as he finally took his turn through the well, closing the portal with his passage.

On the other side of the well, just after Sango came through; she turned to Kagome with her eyes wide.

“They sound like angels when they sing!” she gasped with awe, “But did you see their eyes?”

Kagome was about to reply when Sesshomaru and Koga suddenly leapt out of the well; effectively turning her attention to other matters. Almost immediately both youkai grimaced and covered their noses.

“Kami, what a stench!” Koga muttered through his hand, looking over at Kagome.

“Oops, should have warned them about that,” said Kagome as she shrugged and walked over to the two. Linking her arms through theirs, she hoped her own calming scent would help them adjust to the new smells in her time. Uncovering his nose, Koga leaned down to sniff Kagome's hair, managing to block out all other scents as he inhaled her soothing jasmine and sakura blossom scent. Sesshomaru growled softly, refusing to follow Koga's example. I'd rather die than sniff her...although she really does smell good. He shook his head, wondering where that thought had come from.

Kagome giggled as Koga's breath tickled her neck, but before she could shove him way, the twins leapt from the well. Stumbling, Death Strike fell into Koga, causing both of them to hit the ground. Shadow lifted an eyebrow at her sister, amusement glinting in her eyes, as Death Strike laughed.

*You did that on purpose, little sister…* smirked Shadow.

*Of course! He's hot! You'd have to be insane to pass up an opportunity to fall into his arms!* Death Strike sent back, her laughter dying some as her gaze locked with Koga's. “Oh sorry, Koga,” she said with a sweet smile. “Thank you for catching me.” Death Strike blushed and pushed herself to her feet, making sure her tail caressed his lazily as she did so. Koga was temporarily stunned as he felt his tail rubbed gently and he had to bite his cheek to suppress the purr the rose in his throat.

*And they call me a tease...* huffed Shadow indignantly. She watched Death Strike extend her hand to help Koga up before she stepping beside Kagome, inadvertently coming between her cousin and the taiyoukai. Kagome was stifling giggles as Sesshomaru accidentally removed his hand from his nose and took a deep breath. He cringed, expecting his sensitive nose to be assaulted by the numerous odors of Kagome's era, but instead he was surprised when the scent of thunderstorms and lilacs graced his senses. Closing his eyes, he tried to pinpoint where the scent was coming from…..moving subconsciously, he ended up with his nose buried in Shadow's hair, just below her ear.

Everyone stared, including InuYasha, who had recently come through the well, at Sesshomaru. Still not realizing just what he was doing, Sesshomaru was startled back to reality when a very loud, aggravated growl met his ears. His eyes flew open as he realized exactly what he was doing.

“If you don't mind….” growled Shadow, as her ears twitched in annoyance, “I catch the hint that you like my scent, but if you could please get your rather cold nose OUT of my hair!”

Kagome and Sango burst into fits of giggles as a blushing Sesshomaru stepped away from Shadow. InuYasha was still staring in shock at his brother. Holy shit…did he just??? Oh Kami! He did! InuYasha's jaw dropped in amazement as he watched the ice prince blush. Shadow lifted one delicate eyebrow inquisitively at the Demon Lord.

“Are you blushing?!” she asked with astonishment, her eyes widening slightly, not believing what she was seeing. “Well cousin, I guess you were wrong about him. Obviously he has some emotion as he is embarrassed enough to be blushing now.”

His mask slipping back into place, Sesshomaru glared from Shadow to Kagome and back again. Icy golden eyes met silver and then widened slightly in shock as the light and amusement that had been dancing in those eyes suddenly died; causing them to go hard and frosty

*Two can play at that game, oh Great Lord Sesshomaru* Shadow's icy voice rang through his mind; the force of it almost causing him to flinch. Just a swiftly as her presence had entered his mind, it was gone. Shadow turned and smiled warmly at her cousin; her eyes brightening instantly. “How about we get inside and get those gifts?”

Kagome nodded happily, and grabbing hold of a couple of her companions, left the well house and headed for her home. The rest of her friend's followed behind, all gawking at the sights around them, but none stopping in fear of being left behind.

“Mama? Sota? Ji-chan? Anyone home?” called Kagome as the group entered the house. Ji-chan wandered out of the living room, giving his granddaughter a hug before nearly having a heart attack at the sight of Koga and Sesshomaru as Sota came flying down the stairs.

“InuYasha!” he cried as he flung himself onto the hanyou, hugging him hard. Next he gave his sister a long hug before pulling back and looking at her. “Wow, you're really pretty as a hanyou sis. I'm glad the spell finally wore off. I wonder what I'll look like when it finally releases me.” Sota rambled on, his sister's eyes getting larger and larger as he spoke.

“How do you know what happened to me?!” Kagome practically yelled, cutting him off. Sota looked to Shadow and Death Strike for help and they shrugged.

“I overheard mom talking with our cousins the night before your birthday. You know, you were supposed to be home that night!” he accused before continuing, “Anyway, they caught me eavesdropping and decided I needed to know anyway.” He smiled smugly as he realized that his sister didn't even know what she was yet. He was about to say something else when their mother came through the door with her arms full of groceries.

“Oh, Kagome you're home, good!” gasped Mrs. H, “Why don't you show you're friends around while I take care of these and then we'll have lunch.” Kagome could only nod as she watched her mother walk into the kitchen, followed by Faele, in human form with her glamour in place, and another girl, both also carrying bags of groceries.

A short while later, everyone was settled in the living room, nibbling on sandwiches and sipping sodas. Kagome had given her friends from the past a tour of her home, and with her cousins' help, had managed to explain how things, like the toilet and appliances, worked.

Finishing their lunches, Shadow helped her Aunt clear away the remaining food stuffs and the dirty dishes before bringing Kagome's birthday gifts in and piling them on the coffee table. They had just settled down and Kagome was reaching for her first gift, when a deep male voice came from the doorway.

“We're not too late are we?” it asked. Kagome looked up to see Faele and the other girl from earlier standing behind a familiar looking male. “Hey, Kagsy, how about a hug?”

Suddenly Kagome squealed and launched herself into his arms. “Mikel! Oh Kami, Mikel! How have you been?”

Mikel simply smiled. Kagome looked him over quickly…he looked the same, basically, as the last time she had seen him. His shoulder length dark brown hair was shot through with blonde highlights, and his sapphire eyes danced with mischief. Atop his head were little blonde triangular ears, a crimson star graced his forehead, and he had a tail similar to Sesshomaru's wrapped around his waist. InuYasha couldn't suppress his growl as he watched Kagome embrace the other male again. Death Strike glanced at him from the corner of her eyes before speaking up.

“Well, well, what brings our older brother out to play?” Death Strike smirked at Mikel as she leaned back against the chair Koga was sitting in. Her shoulder brushed his calf and he looked down at the top of her head, entranced with watching her ears twitch.

InuYasha stopped growling and looked over at Koga and Death Strike before looking back at Mikel. So he's Kagome's cousin too. Good…Kagome went back to where she was sitting, motioning for them to join the group. Mikel set his present with the others and sat on the opposite end of the couch from Sesshomaru.

Shadow walked back into the room with the last of Kagome's gifts, shoving Faele and the other girl to sit down on the floor as she passed. Looking around, she decided to get the introductions over with. The group discovered the Faele and the other girl with her, Falcon, were full blooded youkai. Both were falcons in true form, as the wings curled closely to their backs attested to, but the amazing part was that they were mates. Jaws dropped at that little tidbit of information.

“Alright, back to those gifts!” exclaimed Shadow, drawing everyone's attention back to the pile of gifts on the table. Shadow grabbed a small one first and handed it to Kagome. Mrs. H., wiping her hands on a towel (she's been washing dishes) came to watch the first two presents be opened.

Kagome swiftly ripped the paper with her claws, exposing an 8 by 10 picture of her when she was younger. She was sitting on a man's knee as he held a baby Sota in his other arm. Tracing his face with her claw, tears sprang to her eyes. The man in the picture was her father….and a youkai. She looked up at her mother, who smiled sadly back.

“Thank you mama,” she whispered as she accepted the next gift Shadow handed her.

“This one is also from your Mother,” she said softly.

This one was a larger gift. Unwrapping it, Kagome found an assortment of clothes….all tailored to fit her new form. She smiled happily when she pulled out a pair of short shorts and a skimpy tank top.

“We know who thought of these…” she said with a wink at her American cousins. She set the clothes aside with the picture and grabbed another package. This one also very large.

“From Death Strike,” read Kagome as she looked at the tag. She ripped it open and gasped. Inside was a glossy black long bow and an empty black quiver...

“It took two of my fangs to make that bow,” said Death Strike, rubbing her jaw in remembrance, “It won't ever break on you and it will also enable you to shoot targets much farther away than the bow you currently have. The quiver is also enchanted so that once you stock it with your arrows the first time you'll never have to stock it again.” Death Strike smiled proudly as Kagome leaned over and gave her a big hug.

The bow set to one side; Kagome grabbed the next gift and hastily ripped it open before reading the tag. Kagome gasped, nearly dropping the sword she revealed for all to see. She pulled the blade from the scabbard admiring the etching on the blade, gasping again as it began to glow crimson, after a moment it dulled to a bright pulsing pink and Kagome sheathed it.

“It was you're father's blade…” Shadow's sorrow filled whisper made everyone glance at her. “He would have wanted you to have it. I….retrieved it… from the battlefield where he fell,” she said softly, a single tear coursing down her cheek unnoticed, “It was made from one of his fangs…the etching on the hilt is our family's crest...” She wiped away another tear and trailed off.

Kagome set the sword down and pulled her cousin into a heartfelt hug, tears sliding down her own cheeks. “Thank you so much...” she whispered into the other female's shoulder before pulling away.

“Ok, we need to cheer this group up!” exclaimed Faele after a few moments of silence. She pulled a gift from behind her back and handed it to Kagome. “This is from me, hun. I'm sure you'll have a blast with it!” The impish smile that graced her lips worried Kagome, but she took the gift anyway and ripped the paper off.

Author's Note: I don't own the song “Fly” which is in this chapter. Hilary Duff sings it….and it's pretty good. Side note: when I mention the twin's glowing eyes at anytime during this story, I really mean glowing….as in can't see their irises or pupils any longer. If you've ever seen the cartoon Gargoyles, the twin's eyes glow just like theirs. Sorry I had intended on getting everything into just this one chapter, but it looks like I had to split it, lol. Please don't hate me.

Review Responses:

Taeniaea: Here ya go! My goal is a chapter a day, except on weekends. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I'm glad you liked the last chapter!

Inu-Shinta: I'm glad you're enjoying this. Hopefully it will only continue to improve. Thanks for the reviews of the pix too. I hadn't even noticed their fingers, lol. I'm not good with hands. Yes, Shadow is drawn too thin….maybe I'll redo them eventually.
