The Closed Door Just Might Open

Chapter 5: the first assignment

“ ` You and you're partner are to get together and construct the posters for our “Back to School Bash” next Thursday. You need to be creative and it has to look like you put effort into it. This will count towards your Social Studies grade since I'm your Social Studies teacher'— oh, come on. This is stupid. And she's counting this as a grade? Man,” I read aloud off of the slip of paper on my way off of campus.

“Well, it won't be that hard to get together on this since we live next to each other,” Inuyasha said also looking at our paper. We are both walking side by side to the school doors.

“This is beyond stupid.”

“Well do you want to get started now at your house,” that one sentence makes me stop, “you know, to get it over with.” I don't really feel comfortable knowing he's going to come into my house. I don't really like anyone coming into my house.

He seems to have noticed I've stopped and turns back to me. I'm not looking at his face; I'm looking at a crack in the floor, contemplating this.

“Is there something wrong with that plan?” he asks. My eyes snap to his face realizing he wants an answer.

“No. Let's get started,” I hurriedly say with a fake smile as I walk ahead of him. I'm sure he has the most confused expression, but I don't look back to check. Now it's my turn to wait for him.

“Are you coming or not?” I ask in an irritated tone, not looking back at him.

“Uh, yeah. You don't have to be so rude, you know,” he says catching up. I roll my eyes. We come to the parking lot. There, I find a red mustang parked by a tree. Red. Why am I not surprised?
“Well, I'll just meet you there,” I say, assuming he's driving.

“Why don't we just walk together?” I stare at him. Why? Is the only question running repeatedly through my mind. I must be looking at him like he's grown a second head `cause he starts talking fast as if trying to recover.

“I mean, it's nice out. And we could discuss how we're going to do this,” he says, waving the paper.

“Don't you need to take your car?” I ask.

“I can leave it. I'll just get it tomorrow.”

“As tempting as that is, I think I'll pass,” I say, beginning to walk away.

“Come on. It's just a ten-minute walk. What have you got to lose?” I pause and look toward the sky, annoyed. Annoyed at him for offering and annoyed at myself for considering it. I let out a sigh and look to the ground. What do I have to lose? It really isn't that big of a deal.

I quickly turn to face him with pursed lips. “Fine, do what you want,” I exasperatingly say in his direction, then turn back to walking home.

The next second he's right beside me. I look back to where he was, then to where he is now. I am truly confused. I'm starting to stutter.

“How'd…you…just…What?” I ask, pointing between him and where he was.

He seems to get what I'm trying to say because he replies, “I'm fast.”

“Well, obviously. How else do you explain doing that?” an emotion shows on his face, but it instantly disappears before I can identify it.

The rest of the walk home was really quiet, with the few questions on the current project. During the silence, I still couldn't stop thinking of the emotion that flickered on Inuyasha's face. What was it? The closest I can think of is fear, but that makes no sense. Why would that question scare him? It's all so very confusing.

“I'm home,” I announced as we walked through the front door of my house, “you can just sit on the couch.” I tell Inuyasha as I go over to the kitchen to see my mom.

“Hi, Mom. Listen, I'm having someone over to work on a project in Student Council,” I told her as she was loading groceries into the fridge.

“That's good. Thanks for letting me know,” she said, her head still in the fridge.

“Ok. Thanks Mom.” I go back to the living room to find Inuyasha. But I also find my brother. Oh boy.

“You wait here. I gotta do something,” I tell Inuyasha, “and Souta? Don't do anything stupid.” he sticks out his tongue at me. I mimic him then head upstairs.

All right, how am I gonna do this? I find my sketchbook and hide it under my bed. I close down my pictures on my computer. What else? What else? I hide my manga books in my cabinet by my dresser. I put my how-to-draw books in my book bag and hide that in my closet. Anything else? Then I find my Rurouni Kenshin season set on the floor by my bed. Where can I put them? I would put them in my book bag, but that's full. I ended up just stuffing them under my bed.

I head back downstairs to find Inuyasha and my brother, bonding. I guess you could call it bonding; they're playing video games. It's like I'm not even there, they're so into the game.

“I got more points,” said Souta confidently.

“Oh, yeah. Well, be ready to kiss those points goodbye!” Inuyasha said, furiously punching buttons.

“I can't kiss them goodbye. You don't get deducted points in this game. They only add.” Souta got a proud smirk on his face stating this fact. Inuyasha got a reflective look on his face from this information.

“Well, I'm gonna beat you anyway.”

“In your dreams.” Inuyasha pauses the game and looks at Souta in horror.

“I don't think I want you in my dreams,” he says scooting away, being melodramatic.

“What? You just met me.”

“Well, based on your sister, I don't think I want you in them.”

“Hey!” I declare to acknowledge I'm here. Both their heads snap in my direction.

“Heeeeyyy,” Inuyasha says in a laid back, innocent way. I glare at him. I need to deflate my anger.

“So what game are you playing?” I ask as I walk over to Souta and ruffle his hair. He hates it, which makes it all the more pleasurable for me. He glares at me as he smoothes down his hair.

“Surf's Up,” Souta informs me. I cock an eyebrow.

“You're playing a surfing game…with penguins?” I ask skeptically.

“I lent my skateboarding game to Kohaku. Besides, surfing is a lot like skateboarding,” defended Souta.

“Oh yeah. How so?” I ask disbelievingly.

“Well there's…grinding and…grinding?” he says unsure.

“That's all there is?”

“Yeah,” he says slowly, “but it has a lot of cool tricks for a lotta points.” I roll my eyes.

“Whatever. Tsunaka, tear yourself away from the video game and come on.” He crosses his arms and looks at me.

“What if I don't want to?”

“It was your idea to get started on the project. If you don't want to work on it you can leave,” I tell him, pointing to the door. He seems to really be thinking about.

“I'll stay here thanks.”

“Fine, then come on,” I say, then turn around and head to my room. Soon as I get there I flop down on my bed, not caring that Inuyasha is in my room at the moment.

“Why'd you even agree to stay over?” I ask him. He seems to be looking around my room at everything. I'm glad I hid my stuff.

“Trust me. If you knew my brother you'd want to stay here, too.”

“I'm not really sure about that. I'd have to meet him to make a judgment,” I say to him, staring at the ceiling.

“So we gonna get started on this thing?”

“Yeah,” I say, flinging myself off my bed and onto the carpet. I look around in my art supplies. When I'm done looking I turn toward Inuyasha with my hand running through my bangs to find him staring intently at me from my computer chair.

“You know what it is we don't have?” I ask.

“What?”

“Poster paper.” he starts chuckling.

“Well, that was smart of us.”

“And markers. And pens.” He starts laughing.

“Well, we're very forgetful people.”

“Yes, yes we are. Well, I'll just walk you out if you want.”

“Sure,” he said getting up from my chair. Inuyasha and I walked down the stairs to find Souta absorbed in his video game. We got only as far as the front door before my mom decided to intervene.

“Oh, I didn't know Inuyasha was the person you were working on a project on,” my mother stated as she wiped her hands on a dishtowel. She held out her hand for Inuyasha to take, which he did.

“Nice to meet you Mrs. Higurashi.” My mom rolled her eyes.

“Call me Naya. Are you staying for dinner?” what? Mom, what are you doing? I quickly intrude.

“No, he has to help his brother with something,” I hurriedly say. Inuyasha gives me a look, but I don't read too much into it.

“Actually, I can hold it off for a little while,” he says with a sweet smile at my mother and a smirk at me. I look toward the ceiling. Kill me.

“Oh that's great. Dinner's almost ready,” my mom declares and then went back into the kitchen. We both just put on our fake, convincing smiles. Wow, Theatre Productions really pays off. Inuyasha leans down and whispers in my ear.

“You must really not like me, trying to get me out of your house so quickly?” He smirks and then goes over to resume playing games with Souta. This won't go well.

*********************

I was wrong. It did go well. But that's what is so bad about it. My mom just loved Inuyasha. He was perfect. Why can't he be like that all the time? He's usually just a retard. What happened?

My mom came back from the kitchen and handed Inuyasha a container of food. We still have food left? It's hard to believe. Inuyasha ate basically everything.

“This is for you to have for later. I'm sure we're not going to eat it,” said my mom as she gave the food to Inuyasha. I put a hand between them and stepped in front of my mother.

“Excuse me? What if I was gonna eat it?” Souta just happened to be walking by at that moment.

“Yeah, mom. The whale has to eat, too,” proclaimed Souta. I shift my gaze to my brother and it turns into a glare.

“You're dead meat!” then I bolted after him. I was close, but I wasn't fast enough. He already found the solace that is his bedroom.

“You're so lucky that door has a lock!” I trudge down the stairs in my fury.

“Come back any time,” says my mother happily at the doorway to Inuyasha.

“I'm sure I'm gonna.” My mother turned around to find me at the bottom of the stairway.

“Oh, Kagome. How about you say goodbye to your guest.” I plaster on a fake smile.

“Yes, Mom,” I said with a hint of sarcasm that my mom didn't pick up.

“Come on, so I can say bye to you,” I say as I shove him out the door and close it behind us. I lean against the door listening for my mom to back away from the door. She's still there, so I decide to just move away from the door and walk to the end of the front yard.

“Well, this has been interesting.” I cross my arms in a casual way.

“Yeah, my mom and brother seem to love you.” This truthful statement irritates me.

“Maybe we should get together on this when one of us has poster paper.”

“That would be convenient,” I say as if it's the most obvious thing.

“So I'll see you in school.” I've turned around and am walking toward my door.

“Later,” I say and wave a hand, not looking back. I hear his footsteps ebb away.

*****************(PoV change)

I start walking back to my house and look at the windows. As soon as I looked I saw movement in the curtains and a flash of silver. Nosy jackass of a brother. I use my key to get in the front door. I open the door to find my brother immersed in yet another book, lounging on the couch.

“What were you doing spying on me from the window?” he's in his own little world; he acts like he didn't even hear me. I walk over toward the couch and slap him upside the head. That got his attention.

“What the hell?” he ask and rubs the back of his head.

“That's what you get for ignoring me,” I tell him as I walk around the house to close the windows.

“I wasn't ignoring you. I didn't even realize you were here.” I shoot him a deadpan look.

“I saw your hair and the curtain move when I walked over here.”

“You sure eyesight isn't fading, dear brother? You know, it's not what it use to be.”

“Shut up. Are the doors locked?” I ask, going over to check the doors.

“Yes, so you don't need to check,” he said exasperatedly. He went back to his book.

“Are—”

“Yes and no to all the questions that get those answers. Enough with the questionnaire. It's really annoying how you always do this,” he says laying his book on his lap.

“Whatever. Why were you spying on me out there?” he's silent for a long time, I'm not sure he heard me.

“I saw you with that girl next door. Is she gonna be your new girlfriend?” he teases.

“I already have a girlfriend, idiot! Besides, she's the cousin of my girlfriend.”

“Oh, so there's gonna be a love triangle. Interesting,” he says, closing his book entirely and looking toward me, fascinated.

“No! You're such a retard! I'm not in a love triangle. Nothing's going on. She's just my student council partner.”

“So there's gonna be an affair. This is so exciting.” He sounds like a gossip-loving girl. What can I say to make him shut up? He hates Kikyo. Maybe I can work that in.

“You do know that my girlfriend's sister is your girlfriend.” He smile instantly disappears. He looks at me in terror.

“W-what?” he asks horrified. He starts heaving and gagging. He rolls off the couch onto the floor, looking like he's gonna throw up right then and there.

“I think I'm gonna be sick,” Sesshomaru struggles. The heaving continues.

“Are you quite done?” it scares me how much I sounded like him just now. Right now, it seems like we've switched personalities.

“No!” he keeps gagging. He finally regains composure, somewhat.

“How could someone as good and nice as Rin be sisters with someone as cold-blooded and…heat sensitive as your girlfriend.” I get a puzzled look on my face. Cold-blooded and heat sensitive? What does that describe.

“Are you saying my girlfriend is a snake?” I ask aggravated.

“Snake? I wasn't thinking of that. I was actually thinking of reptile, but you specified it for me. Snake is so much better actually. Thanks for the suggestion.” I glare at him.

“Whatever,” I say as I trek toward my room, tearing off my necklace.

“You know, you need to lighten up,” he shouts down the hall. I see him duck at the book I threw at him.

“Hey, don't throw books!” he's goes toward the hardback and picks it up, “How dare you throw this! This is a collectors edition.” I poke my head out to look at him expressionless.

“You got that at the Swap Meet.” His face falls slightly.

“Books are important!” I roll my eyes and go back into my room. My brother is such an idiot.

a/n this is the longest chapter yet. I'm so proud of myself. Now don't expect these every time. Alas, I don't own the Rurouni Kenshin boxed set. I've seen it, though. This took forever to write, and it's harder for me to run things by my co-writer since school ended. I was able to run most of this by her, though. Please tell me what you think. Review! Until next time. Soon I hope.
