InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Dark Hour ❯ Let it All Out ( Chapter 3 )
Ch. 3
Let it All Out…
He came awake with jolt. Big mistake, he realized when a sharp pain traveled the entire length of his body. He looked around, confused. His surroundings looked unfamiliar and he began to wonder if maybe Naraku had changed his mind and sent his goons back for him. No, Naraku wasn't that forgiving. When he wanted you dead, it usually happened. If that were true, then why wasn't he?
He sat up, his back against the headboard. He rubbed his temples, willing himself to remember how he'd gotten here. A face flashed through his memory. It was a bit fuzzy, but he did remember a woman by his side the night before telling him that she'd found him in the road. He also remembered pleading with her to not call the hospital or the cops, which had probably only served to scare the shit out of her.
Speaking of shit, that's exactly what he felt like. His head hurt and his body felt sore, but the pain was considerably less than it'd been last night. If he'd been left out on that road any longer, he'd be dead right now.
He couldn't help but be grateful to the woman who'd saved his life, not even knowing the danger she was putting herself in. He couldn't do that to her. Too many things were already screwed up with his life; he didn't need to do the same to someone else.
Gritting his teeth, he threw his legs over the bed and stood up. He had to grip the edge of the nightstand as his head started spinning. He forced himself to walk to the door and open it.
"Oh!" The woman before him gasped, startled to see him up. She was holding a tray with coffee, water, and toast on it. He couldn't help staring at her, she was beautiful. She was wearing a black pantsuit with a white silk blouse. The color suited her ivory complexion perfectly, making her even lovelier. He shook his head to clear his thoughts from their chosen path.
"I didn't expect you to be up so early," She said, offering him a bright smile. He felt a stirring in his chest, not used to such open friendliness. He stepped aside as she pushed past him, depositing the tray on the night stand. She gave him a disapproving look. "You really should be in bed, although," She said, "Some of your bruises and cuts seem to have disappeared." She frowned, but then the bright smile returned. "We both know that's not possible. It probably just seemed as if you were more banged up last night."
He looked away from her smiling face, not wanting her to see how uncomfortable he was. She tilted her head. "How are you feeling?" He glanced at her, once again feeling a tightening in his chest. Why was she concerned about him, a guy she didn't even know? If she knew what was good for her, she would've left him out on that road.
"I'm feeling better." He said. He made a move towards the door, knowing he had to get out of there. "Wait, where are you going?" She asked, walking to him and grabbing his arm. His head whipped around, a growl low in his throat. He realized his mistake when her hand snapped back and fear crept into her eyes. He hadn't meant to respond like that, it was habit.
She took a step away from him, her eyes continuing to look at him with a fearful expression. He sighed and buried his face in his hands. He really should just turn and walk away now, before her life was thrown into turmoil because of him. He really should, but….
"I'm sorry." He said, dropping his hands to his side. He walked to the edge of the bed and sat down. He dropped his head. "You're the last person I should be snapping at after all you've done for me." Kagome hesitated a few seconds before coming to sit beside him.
He sighed heavily. His life was so complicated and he felt so alone. Maybe all these feelings were coming to the surface because of his near death experience, but all he knew was that he needed somebody to talk to.
"I lead a very dangerous life." He said. Kagome looked at him, her eyes wide. He noticed the look but continued on.
"It's not a life I chose, just a life that I was born into. I never thought much about it, whether it was right or wrong, until yesterday." He stopped, staring off. Kagome studied him, noticing the pain and regret etched in his features. She placed a hand on his knee, letting him know she was there. He swallowed hard, deciding to press on.
"Me and my partner, Jaken, were doing business at a corner store like we did every week. The guy, though, he was giving us a hard time, demanding we give him what he was sent for before we got the money. I knew something was wrong, but I ignored it, just waiting until we could leave." He took a deep breath.
"And then the little girl came into the store. That was the moment when I knew that we were being set up. The guy and the shopkeeper were in on the whole thing. The little girl was supposed to wait for the signal from the shopkeeper so she could tell the men lying in wait for me and Jaken. They were going to kill us and take the money, but…" He didn't want to finish, didn't want to think about what happened next.
Kagome wasn't sure she wanted him to continue. The way he looked, it was so sad that she had the urge to wrap her arms around him and tell him that everything was going to be ok.
He fixed his gaze on the wall. "Jaken realized at about the same time what the little girl was sent in to do and shot her. I tried to stop him, but I was too late." Kagome looked at him in shock. "How could he shoot a little girl?" She asked, sadness and disbelief mixing in her tone. He ignored her question. "I took his gun and shot all three of them, him the man, and the shopkeeper. I took the little girl to the hospital, but there was so much blood and I left before anyone could ask any questions."
Kagome looked away from him, not believing what she was hearing. His story sounded like something right out of movie. She didn't know people who lived this kind of life. "You killed them?" She asked. He nodded stiffly, his jaw set. He wouldn't apologize for that, they deserved it. Anyone that could callously use a little girl the way the two men did and shoot her as Jaken had done didn't deserve to live. Perhaps he didn't either, but he would have to deal with that later.
"After my boss found out what I did, he sent his men after me. An act like that, shooting your own partner and disobeying direct orders, is viewed as a penalty punishable by death in the world I live in." He stated matter-of-factly. Kagome looked at him, her eyes still holding a hint of fear. "And what world is that?" She asked. He looked directly at her, for some reason needing her to know the truth.
"A world filled with violence, drugs, stealing, you name it. You learn to get used to it after working for the mob as long as I have." He said, a hint of derision in his voice. Kagome gasped, not sure she'd heard him correctly. Had this man really just sat there and told her he worked for the mob?
She hadn't realized that she'd gotten up and was backing up towards the door. He sighed. What had he expected her to do? Give him a big hug and tell him it didn't matter? That was foolish and this was not the time for foolish hopes and dreams.
"Look, I appreciate everything you've done, but-"
"Who are you?" Kagome interrupted, her voice cold. He looked away. If she knew that kind of information than her life truly would be in danger.
"Damnit, answer me!" She said more forcefully. "If I've put myself in some sort of danger by helping you, I at least have the right to know who it is that's putting my life in danger."
He rubbed his temples. He was starting to get a headache. Maybe he should've kept his mouth shut like he'd been doing all these years, but he couldn't help it. There was something about her eyes, those alluring smoke gray orbs that seemed to pull you into their depths.
"My name is Sesshomaru Iakouy." He said so softly that Kagome almost didn't hear him. Almost. "Did you say Iakouy?" She asked, wondering if she'd slipped into the twilight zone. The past couple of hours of her life had been anything but normal.
He nodded his head. He knew she'd probably heard of the name because of his cousin, Naraku, who always seemed to stay in the headlines. You'd have to be deaf and dumb not to have heard of the Iakouy family.
"So you're part of that crime family." She said this more as a statement than a question. Here before her sat a member of the very family she was supposed to investigate for her story. A member of the very family that always seemed to escape charges for illegal activities and he had just admitted something big, something that could bring the entire Iakouy family to their knee. Her mind screamed at her to take her chance. If she used what he'd just told her, she was sure the Pulitzer Prize was as good as hers.
She glanced at him, her eyes locking with his. He seemed so lost. Even though she'd just met him, something inside her ached to comfort him.
"Are you alright?" He asked. She nodded her head slowly. "I will be."
