InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The End is Only the Beginning ❯ moving away from the past ( Chapter 1 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

Walking down the streets in the middle of the night, a pair of bright blue eyes gazed up upon the stars that seemed to decorate the moonless sky. It was on nights of the new moon that Kagome seemed to be the most restless, roaming the empty streets of Tokyo thinking of her lost friends in the past.

`It's the night of the new moon tonight, Inuyasha's human night. I wonder how everyone is doing. *sigh* Did you really go to hell with Kikyo after I left? Did Sango and Miroku ever admit their love for each other and get married? I wonder how Rin is doing; she has probably driven Jakken and Fluffy-sama mad by now. Poor Shippou, he must have been devastated when I disappeared. I hope he is happy; I miss him so much. Damn this cursed jewel! Why did it take me away from my friends and my kit? Seven years! It has been seven years since that fateful day I fell into the Bone Eaters well, the day I met Inuyasha. Now, four years since it dragged me back to my time permanently, I still cannot move on with life here in the modern era. I miss the clean air and the green forest unsoiled by man. I miss fighting demons alongside with my friends, no, not just friends, my second family.'

A few blocks back a group of thugs had started to follow the young woman, who seemed oblivious to their presence. In truth, she knew they were following her, but paid them no heed. It was nothing she could not handle if they decided to get hostile. If there was one thing that she learned during her trip to the past, it was to defend herself. Thanks mostly to Sango and Sesshoumaru; she learned how to fight very well. Her ever growing miko powers helped boost her speed, strength, and agility. When pushed to her limits in battle, she could almost rival Sesshoumaru. The thugs were not the ones that had her interest at that time; it was another man - no, a hanyou of some sort that was also following her. She could definitely sense some youkai in him, less than a quarter, but he was not sending any ill intent.

The thugs that were following Kagome finally decided to make their move and surrounded her. One of the uglier thugs spoke up first; he was large built and not very tall, but compared to Kagome he seemed to tower in size.

“Hey there pretty lady, what's a sweet thing like you doing out here all alone at this time of night? How `bout me and my friends keep you company and have some fun, huh?”

Kagome was beyond annoyed by these fools that were trying to mess with her. Giving them a glare that she learned from the master of icy glares himself, she stated in an indifferent tone.

“Please step aside and leave me alone.”

It was obvious that the gang leader was not at all happy with her response. The thug attempted to grab Kagome, but right before the hand made contact the hanyou she sensed earlier ran up in a flash and grabbed a hold of the thug's arm. The hanyou was not bad looking, not very tall, but still taller than she was by a good three inches. Black hair, brown eyes that held deep longing and sorrow, dressed in a flannel button shirt and a pair of blue jeans, he looked about thirty or so.

“Hey there buddy, maybe you should leave the lady alone before you get hurt.” the gruff looking hanyou said to the thug.

“Why don't you stay out of other peoples business you basturd and stay out off my way. You will pay for interfering. Get him guys,” the thug snorted.

The other men lunged at the hanyou. They were easily taken care of with a few kicks to the stomach and punches to the jaw. In no time, all five-gang members were sprawled on the sidewalk groaning in pain. Seeing they had no chance of winning, they all scrambled to their feet and made a run for it. The leader yelled back as he was running away, “You got lucky this time, the next time I see you, you won't be so lucky!”

Dusting off his hands the hanyou looked over to the young woman, “You alright there miss? You really shouldn't be walking the streets alone at this time of night.”

Kagome graced him with a warm smile, “I'm alright, thanks for helping out there. My name is Higurashi, Kagome. Would you like some coffee? It'll be my treat for saving me from those men back there.”

“Sure kid, why not. My name is Logan by the way”

“Well Logan it's a pleasure to meet you” With that said they both continued to walk down the street in silence to the nearest coffee shop.

`Months of wandering in attempt to find out more about my past, I find myself back here roaming the streets of Japan. It is here I remember studying martial arts under my sensei. After searching for so long, I have yet to uncover anything about who I am. Perhaps it is time to go back to the institute.'

While walking, Logan noticed a group of thugs tailing a young woman. Sensing trouble brewing, he decided to follow them incase they tried anything funny. After tailing them for a few minuets, the gang made a move and surrounded the young woman. Logan moved in to get a closer look at what is happening, as he did he got a better look at the girl and noticed she was quite attractive. Long raven hair down past her waist, bright blue eyes that would put the most dazzling jewels to shame, smooth fair skin and a well toned body clad in a pair of loose jeans and a sweater, she could not have been much older than twenty.

The woman gave the man a glare that could make hell freeze over, and made Logan cringe. Then the idiot made a move to grab her. At this point, Logan dashed out to stop him before he could hurt her.

“Hey there buddy, maybe you should leave the lady alone before you get hurt.”

“Why don't you stay out of other peoples business you bastard and stay out off my way. You will pay for interfering, get him guys.”

The dumb asses all came at Logan, punching and kicking blindly like fools. He made quick work of them, and in no time, they were scrambling to run away like a bunch of cowards. The leader of the gang yelled back trying to salvage what little pride he still had left.

“You got lucky this time, the next time I see you, you won't be so lucky!”

Looking over at the girl, Logan asked her if she was ok. “You alright there miss? You know you really should not be walking the streets alone this time of night.”

She looked at me and smiled, `wow she has a pretty smile'. “I'm alright, thanks for helping out there. My name is Higurashi, Kagome. Would you like some coffee? It'll be my treat for saving me from those men back there.”

“Sure kid, why not. My name is Logan by the way.”

“Well Logan it's a pleasure to meet you.”

Three blocks away from their current location, they finally found a café that was still open, and ordered some coffee while talking about random things. As she spoke about her self, she rambled on about menial things revealing very little about herself. The only thing Logan got out of her was that she was twenty-two, finished with college and living in a shrine. It was close to three in the morning by the time they finished their coffee, and she got up to leave.

“Well it was really nice meeting you tonight, I had better head home now and get some rest before the sun rises,” she said, before walking out and paying for their coffee.

The walk home for Kagome was uneventful. Upon stepping into her apartment, she noticed a new message on her answering machine. `Who could have called at this time of night?' *beep* “Hello, Kagome Higurashi, this is Professor Xavier from the Xavier Institute for the Gifted. I am calling to see if you are still interested in the teaching position here at the institute. We would love for you to join our teaching staff. If you are still interested, give me a call back. Travel and living arrangements are already arranged if you agree to take our offer. Your plane would leave this coming Friday at noon. I strongly encourage you to consider my offer. Goodbye” *beep*

`America huh? This could be a good change in scenery. Perhaps this could help me get my mind off my past, and help me move on. Funny, I do not recall even sending an application for the position. Well, I guess it will not hurt to try it. I will call them tomorrow and start packing.'
