Chapter 12

Incriminating Evidence

 

“Kagome, what is the meaning of this? What do you think you are doing with these?” Ms. Higuarshi shouted holding out a baggie filled with syringes and the small medical guidebook. Kagome blinked away the sleep to clear the blurry figure screaming down at her.

 

“Mama?” she said groggily. Blinking twice she muttered, “What?” Finally taking everything in, she opened her eyes wide with horror as her mother held out the incriminating evidence. Bolting upright in her bed, Kagome declared, “Mom, it's not what you think. I…” She stopped, how was she going to explain this?

 

“I…” She tried again.

 

“Kagome, I don't want any excuses. Whatever the reason, there is no good reason to abuse drugs.”

 

“But… I…”

 

“Didn't you hear what I just said? I don't want to hear any excuses!” Her mother repeated heatedly.

 

“But…”

 

“No buts, young lady.”

 

“But if you would just listen to me!” Kagome cried tears threatening to surface.

 

“Alright I'm listening.” Her mother yielded sourly. Kagome heard the underlying skepticism, but took the tainted olive branch nonetheless.

“I know it's risky, but I don't have a lot of time and I couldn't think of anything else.” Kagome finished.

 

After an awkward silence, her mother began…

 

“I see.”

 

Another pause stretched between Kagome and her mother as Ms. Higuarshi weighed the possible scenario's/solutions but couldn't really come up with any. It was settled then, she didn't like it, but she didn't have much of a choice. She was going to have to help.

 

“Well, Kagome. I don't like it. But you have my support and what help I can offer. I am a nurse, so at least allow me to be the one to administer the sedative.”

 

“Mama, I don't know what to say, thank you.” She stated simply and abruptly flung her arms around the woman's neck.
