Chapter 11
Just the Facts

Kagome sat on her bed Indian style; flipping through her latest twenty-five percent off purchase, at Kaede's Book Shop. Funny, how medical books only had turned out to be on sale that day She reflected and then returned her gaze to the book.

What are tranquilizers? It asked. Of course Kagome already knew that tranquilizers were a group of drugs that were used to treat medical conditions, such as: severe anxiety, stress disorders, and insomnia. She looked at the definition disappointedly. I already know all this. She gripped innerly.

Why tranquilizers are used to treat sever anxiety, stress disorders, and insomnia? The reduce the amount of activity in the brain and central nervous system The reduced activity produces a sense of calm and well being, which is why they are known as depressants.

“Ahh, here we go!” Kagome exclaimed.

What is the difference from a tranquilizer and a barbiturate? She read on. The main difference lay in the chemical structure. In general, tranquilizers and barbiturates, but barbiturates are stronger.

Now this is probably what I need. Kagome thought to herself.

Some barbiturates include:
Amobarbital (hypnotic)- which can be injected, or taken orally in capsules/tablet form.
Phenobarbital (Luminal, hypnotic, sedative, anti-convulsion)- this could also be injected, or taken orally in capsule/tablet form.
Secobarbital (hypnotic)- this could be injected, or taken orally in capsule/tablet form.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal, hypnotic)- this can only be injected.

If used regularly, most barbiturates will only be effective for about two weeks.

What is the danger if a doctor prescribes tranquilizers or barbiturates to a patient? The dangers of tranquilizers/barbiturates are the same whether a doctor prescribes them or they are gotten a hold of through illegal means. The most danger lies in taking too many of them at a given time. A doctor's prescription will include instructions on about how many tranquilizers should be taken, or how many fluid ounces should be injected and how often this should be done. Ignoring these instructions or using illegal tranquilizers without medical advice can be fatal or may result in other problems. ( The exact effect varies with the type of tranquilizer and the size of the dose.)The other two greatest dangers are tolerance and dependence. Dependence can lead to withdrawal if a person stops using the drugs abruptly.
Withdrawal symptoms:
Restlessness
Anxiety
Insomnia
Seizures
Headaches
Nausea and stomach problems (vomiting, diarrhea, etc…)
Hallucinations
Trouble speaking clearly
Increased Hostility
Disturbing dreams
Loss of appetite

Kagome closed the little medical manuscript. Well, I think I know the jist now all that's left is to decide which way is best for me to use the tranquilizers and what type of tranquilizer or barbiturate I should use then I'll know the exact risks involved. She deduced.
