“The Inutaisho Legacy” chapter two
Imminent News
The next morning, Sango and Kagome peeled and washed vegetables, and boiled rice for the morning meal as their babies played together. Souta stood carefully by them and rubbed his face as he watched Nozomi and Inutaro roll against each other. The baby's giggling and squeals made the two mothers smile to each other.
“Hope, hmm? That is an apt name,” Kagome giggled as she watched the youngest exterminator child fling a chubby arm over her son. Inutaro laughed, his darkened eyes tinged with gold shining. Souta sucked his thumb and regarded the babies with mild interest.
“I suppose it is needed for a new home. Hikaru was named by dear Miroku, and we both agreed upon Souta, so I got to choose the name for my last daughter,” Sango grinned, her hands agile with the cutting knife. Kagome wiped her hands on her borrowed apron and knelt down to pat Souta's back. The child sniffed and smiled at her brightly, making Kagome's maternal instinct flare. She hugged her brother's namesake and picked him up.
“I'm honored actually that you named your boy Souta,” Kagome said, smoothing the boy's hair out of his eyes. He blinked intelligently and gave his easy smile. “I'll have to tell my brother this. He'll be so pleased!”
Sango crouched and touched Inutaro's ears gently as he looked up, panting. “I think Inutaro will grow to be as strong as his father. See those fingers? They may grow claws one day,” she commented. Kagome smiled down at her son as he blubbered seeing her hold another child than himself.
“Uh oh, I think someone's jealous,” she said in her lilting voice. Inutaro sniffled and gave a scowl, threatening to scream. Souta sucked his thumb and leaned his head against Kagome's shoulder.
“Wah!” Inutaro wailed, flailing his tiny fists and rocking back and forth on the tatami mats. Souta lifted his head and winced.
“Mama, he's crying!” he said knowingly as Kagome set him on his feet. Sango nodded as Nozomi herself began to sniffle and she picked up her child.
“We know, Souta-chan. He'll calm down,” Sango said gently. Kagome picked up her tantrumy son and rocked him. Immediately Inutaro burrowed against her breast and burbled happily. Kagome sighed.
“Just like his father!” Sango wound up laughing with her knowingly as Souta looked between them, confused.

Daisuke patrolled the surrounding lands with Miroku and Inuyasha, Hikaru strolling between the three men for safety. The safety precaution was almost reflex, as all youkai had been scoured from the proximity of the exterminator village. Upon Miroku and Sango's return to her old home, they had put the reputation of the village back up to par and what remaining youkai were in the vicinity, had fled to safer pastures.
Hikaru bounced along happily, in hakama tailored for a child, and a matching haori. She enjoyed her `hunter's clothing' as they allowed her absolute freedom of her body. Plus she could run a lot faster than in her kimono! Miroku laughed and placed his right hand on top of his daughter's head. He never dreamed he would reach the day his right hand would be unbound and free to receive the caress of a breeze, or touch children of his without warning. He was truly blessed his family's mission was finally over.
“Mah, she's energetic!” Inuyasha barked, crossing his arms inside his wide sleeves. Hikaru beamed up at him and nodded, hopping along. Daisuke shouldered his yari behind them and chuckled.
“Can I practice swords later, Papa? Can I?” Hikaru asked, tugging on Miroku's hand. Miroku smiled beatifically and clasped her fingers.
“I don't see why not, if Daisuke doesn't mind,” he said carefully. Daisuke shrugged and grinned easily as was his way. Inuyasha sniffed.
“I wouldn't mind letting this kid whack sticks with me. Until my boy comes of age that is!” he said proudly. Hikaru squealed and laughed, happy to receive another partner. Miroku laughed.
“Just don't be upset if your son only wants to study,” he teased. Inuyasha shook his head.
“He'll be a warrior too! Kagome hunted with us, and she studies a lot now!” Inuyasha pointed out.
“True, true,” Miroku nodded.
Inuyasha stopped and sniffed the air around him. “What is it?” Daisuke asked, spreading his hunter's senses as far as he could.
“Nothing,” The hanyou prince shrugged. “Just something that wasn't really there.” Inuyasha's left hand held Tetsusaiga's sheathe tightly as the small party wound through the forest expertly.
Sesshomaru strolled through the woods on the opposite end of a nearby clearing and took off in a giant leap. His brother was apparently doing well.

Rin sat carefully on her knees in the royal palace gardens, contemplating the beauty around her. The youkai servants had always treated her with enough respect and she was content while her Lord was out on his patrols.
She needn't fear Sesshomaru-sama would not return for along time. When he took long journeys, he always took her and Jaken-sama.
“His lordship is returning! Sesshomaru-sama has returned!” Guards and servants spread the word and Rin smiled, standing to her feet carefully and letting her arranged layered kimono fall around her elegantly.
Within moments, Jaken-sama made his way to her side, mumbling as always and they waited loyally for their lord to make himself known to them.
Sesshomaru strode down the hallways, servants kowtowing at each end, and stopped before the teenaged human girl and his retainer. Rin bobbed down in a low bow, Jaken kowtowing beside her. Sesshomaru chuckled lightly and Rin was pleased to hear the small sound of mirth.
“Rise, Rin,” he commanded deeply and Rin stood tall, looking up into his golden eyes. They looked warm today.
Sesshomaru was always flattered secretly to see the open emotion upon his ward's face, and their courtship rituals were going well. For weeks, they dined and walked and he showered gifts upon her. Rin couldn't tell the difference of youkai and human courtship, but Sesshomaru seemed to know what he was doing so she would not voice complaint at a lack of difference.
“My lord?” she asked quietly, her eyes demure, but a small smile upon her face. Sesshomaru's claws tightened at his side, wanting to touch her cheek but they were before half the palace.
“I shall require your presence for the evening meal,” he purred softly and he was satisfied to see a small blush dart across his human's face. He could see so clearly now why his father chose the path he did that got him a scrawny half-brother. His human loved him dearly. And he wanted to love her in return.
Rin bowed lowly, satisfying his primal instinct and Sesshomaru growled in appreciation, turning to stride down to his offices. Myoga sprang out of a nearby bush and hopped after her lord and master.
“Sesshomaru-sama! Do you not require my reports, Sesshomaru-sama!” Myoga exclaimed, as he hopped in long bounds behind the Inu lord. Sesshomaru walked leisurely, the flea almost touching the ends of his long white hair.
“Perhaps this Sesshomaru does require a word with you, Myoga,” he purred evenly. Myoga hopped into the office doors and the servants slid the doors shut behind them.
“Yes, my lord! What is it you require, Sesshomaru-sama?” Myoga asked, hopping up and down beside the low desk. Sesshomaru kneeled behind the piece of furniture and took a brush between his claws, hoping to give the illusion he was not nervous.
His accomplishment at masking himself put nothing out of place as Myoga instead mopped his brow at the intense scrutiny of his lord.
“This Sesshomaru intends to extract further information about the inuyoukai mating rites,” Sesshomaru commanded evenly. Myoga gaped at his lord, eyes bugged out, then waved his handkerchief before him to fan himself.
“Y-yes, my lord! May I inquire as to which lady you wish to?…”
“That is none of your concern, or anyone elses,” Sesshomaru's voice cracked like a whip. Myoga cowered upon the tatami mats and bowed low.
“Yes, my lord! I will tell you what you need to know, but I think you know all there is really…” Myoga stammered. Sesshomaru merely watched him impassionately.
“But I will inform you!” An hour or so later, Sesshomaru saw it fit to let the old flea vassal off. He truly did know everything there was already to know about his family's mating rites. He just had to choose the appropriate night he wished to fulfill the rites and mark his intended.
Myoga bounded away down the palace corridors, deep in thought. His lordship surely must not have hated his father as all thought he did, if he was intending to follow in his sire's footsteps. Myoga knew he intended to mark the girl Rin, one could tell by the gifts his lordship bestowed upon her. And his lordship had begun the courting rites.
Myoga wished the girl and his lordship happiness and bounded away from the palace. Perhaps Inuyasha-sama would wish to know of all that was transpiring in his father's palace.
Myoga couldn't ignore the irony, that where first he had informed one brother of an intended marking, he now went to inform the other brother of the same news.

Shippou returned to the village two days later, amidst hails from the young exterminators. Kagome came running as the barrier went down and her taller kitsune son walked into the gateway. His height came to her chest now in five short human years, and his tail was bushier, his topknot longer.
“Kagome!” He called and ran forward to meet her in a hug. Kagome brushed her hands over his wider back and stammered well-wishes.
“Shippou-chan, you've grown!” She stood back to take in his new height, his slanted mischievous eyes, his stronger jaw, and his strong paws. He still favored the fox skin vest over his haori and hakama, but a dark green silk sash cinched his narrow waist.
“A gift from Kyoko!” he laughed as Kagome's gaze drifted up and down him.
“Oi, is that the runt? Come here, shrimp!” Inuyasha's voice sounded and Shippou darted to punch his shoulder, then get caught up in a manly hug.
“I swear you haven't changed a bit, Inuyasha!” Shippou said. Inuyasha stood tall, the baby wriggling against his back in his sling.
“Well, I've got this guy with me all the time,” he turned and let Kagome slide Inutaro from his sling and into her arms.
“Shippou, say hello to our son, Inutaro,” Kagome whispered proudly. Shippou took in the small puppy ears on the boy's head, the white tufts of hair, and the darkened eyes tinged with inuyoukai gold. He smiled and leaned up to clasp the baby's fingers.
“Well, he's a grand sight for the age!” Shippou announced greatly. Kagome blushed at the compliment and squeezed her son close.
“Thanks, Shippou,” Inuyasha's chest puffed out manfully. “You look like you're doing well, too!”
“Well, I've been dating Kyoko for years now…” Shippou added and the friends turned to head to Miroku and Sango's house.

The days went by quietly and peacefully in Inuyasha and Kagome's visit to the past. Inuyasha carried Inutaro around in his arm in his patrols when Kagome needed rest and he was content the young hunters staying on at the village would protect the walls in his absence. His son's eyes darted wildly in these walks, as his little nose worked hard to get all the smells in and Inuyasha would laugh at the sight.
Kagome had all of the motherly attention she could take, he knew. Sango and Miroku's children adored her and while she loved spending time with each one, it always amused Inuyasha that his son would grow jealous and wail at the sight.
“He's as spoiled as you when it comes to me,” Kagome would chide gently, taking her son for a feeding or changing while Souta or Hikaru would hover, waiting for her attention again.
Sango, nursing Nozomi near the group, could only agree.
Ataru liked being high up on the wall when the high exterminator fed her baby this way. He was a young man after all, and could enjoy the view of her breast where he was.
Until Shun ratted him out to Miroku, and the monk hit him over the head with his staff and informed him to keep his eyes away from the walls instead of into them.
“Be glad you only got the monk's blow,” Daisuke hissed at his comrade later. “Kagome-san and Sango-san could do a lot worse to you, children or no!”
Ataru resolved to be a gentleman.
All too soon, Kagome and Inuyasha packed up their son and bags, and took their leave back to the future. Kagome, Inuyasha, Sango and Miroku embraced each other and talked about coming back for yet another visit soon.
“I just have to pass more exams! Then we'll come back,” Kagome promised as Inuyasha cradled his boy to his chest.
Hikaru bowed at Miroku's side and Miroku waved Souta's hand. “Please see us soon! And don't take five years,” he urged. Kagome resolved to look into that mystery but for now bid her friends a dear temporary farewell.
Shippou stood tall by Sango's side and waved his paw. “If you don't come back very soon, I'll come through and find you!”
Sango cradled Nozomi and shouted goodbyes as the small family made their way out of the front gate, Daisuke and Shun flanking them for the walk back to the well.
As Inuyasha took his family into his arms and jumped into the future, he could only wonder why his brother had been near the exterminator village days ago.

Sesshomaru took Rin's hands in his one and stared into her eyes as they stood in his bedchamber. He had just taken her to the Inu shrine below the palace and his human was well received by the heart of the mountain. He would have put off what was required next in the rites, but his Rin had grown willful, embracing him tightly and saying she didn't wish to be apart from him.
His nose took her body in sharply and he held reign of his darker passions. He would not hurt his Rin as Kagome Woman had been hurt resisting him. While Rin may be open to whatever was required of her physically, she had never experienced anything of it before. This Sesshomaru would usher her into the new aspect of their relationship easily.
Rin watched breathlessly as Sesshomaru-sama let her hands fall and took hold of her outer kimono. He gently tugged and opened her to her thin robe within. Her lord's wide chest was pressing up and down noticeably and his breaths sounded strained to her human's ears. She crossed her arms before her, shaking in her thin garment and her lord's golden eyes met hers. Unfathomable sadness yet passion greeted her and Rin stared back into his open emotion.
“Rin…..this Sesshomaru would never hurt you,” he whispered. Rin nodded, happy he was expressing himself to her in private. She closed her eyes as he tilted her chin up with his claws, then opened them in surprise when he licked her neck and cheek. It didn't feel bad, just funny and new and she pushed on his shoulders when he didn't go near her lips.
“Rin?” he asked, snuffing in light confusion. Rin stood on her tiptoes and touched the edges of his strong jaw.
“Lean down, my lord,” she whispered. When Sesshomaru-sama's face tilted down to hers, she pressed her lips against his as she had seen other humans do in their travels. Both were new at it, but the feeling and sensation weren't wholly unwelcome. And they wanted to learn more about each other.
As the night wound on, Sesshomaru and Rin had their arms wrapped tightly around each other, hands touching almost timidly. Rin giggled that Sesshomaru was still a shy kisser but he learned as the night's hours passed. They tilted back into a large chair and Sesshomaru cradled Rin over his lap, kissing her bare shoulder as he stripped her to the waist. Rin sat straddling his hips at her lord's command, eyes wide when Sesshomaru lowered his head and applied the most delicious torture against her small breasts. Her nipples peaked beneath his lips and hand. She gasped, pressing against his head with her hands, his luscious white hair sifting through her fingers.
By morning the two were sprawled across his wide bed, half dressed beneath the covers. Sesshomaru ran his hand over Rin's hair, watching her sleep curled by his side. He hadn't taken her this night or bitten her, but he had nibbled the area he intended to mark, and Rin's passions had grown during the night of exploration. It was new to be hard-pressed, literally, and lay half sated at her side. Whenever he took his passions in the past, he intended to leave the situation well satiated.
Now, while his loins still ached softly as he watched Rin, he knew the pain was well worth a lifetime of trust from her.
Sesshomaru leaned down and kissed Rin's brow tenderly and closed his eyes to sleep finally.

Koga surveyed his mountain caves with a serious eye as Hiko and Ginta charged along behind him. In the years since Kagome had mysteriously vanished with the Dog prince, he had put his energy into rebuilding the Wolf clan. While his heart had hurt at Kagome's disappearance, he could only take the human's word that she was fine and well and would be back.
The old wolves had sent Ayame to his side again. Koga at first had harshly made her leave, saying he didn't need any help. But the wolf girl had persistence and kept coming back despite what he said.
Hiko and Ginta only looked at each other and smiled helplessly. Ayame was helping their prince's heart more than he realized.
Ayame came running up now in a whirl of dust and rested by his side. Koga, his arms crossed regally, looked at her from the corner of his eye. While their statuses were still shaky, she was too a wolf and wouldn't part from his side if he ordered it, prince or not.
“There have been news from the old Bone Eaters Well by those exterminators,” Ayame reported and Koga's heart ached. But he wouldn't look back to those days in desperation. He could only live forward.
“We will have to investigate. And it's high time we visited the hunter's village and renew our ties,” Koga growled. Ayame nodded and made to walk away when her prince grabbed her arm and turned her to him. Her gasp couldn't be held back when Koga took her lips with his.
It was time to move forward.

Souta, Mama and Jii-chan welcomed back Kagome and her family as they stepped from the well house. Everything seemed as if only days had passed between the past and the future and Kagome was glad to see the well was still acting as it usually did, instead of putting her five years into her future!
Inutaro wriggled in his sling and looked up inquisitively at his mother as she gazed back at the well house doors. He shifted and wailed lightly to get her attention.
“Oi, Kagome! What are you doing?” Inuyasha called from the kitchen door. Kagome smiled and cradled Inutaro, hearing him babble contently from her attention.
“Nothing, Inuyasha! Wait for me….” When she reached the door, Inuyasha took the baby and his sling from her, in exchange for a kiss.
Kagome went to school the whole next two weeks and took her due exams. It was easy how she and her mate fell back into the modern schedules they kept before and after Inutaro was born. The baby was quickly moving to rolling over and sitting up and his face would muster up into deep scowls if he couldn't move fast enough. Mama and Kagome took countless pictures of him and filled photo albums regularly.
Souta was thrilled to hear he was a namesake for a child of Kagome and Inuyasha's dear friends. While he was honored, the school boy could only privately lament the well would not admit him to fall back into the feudal era so he could meet the exterminators and their children.
Inuyasha, put under the yoke of shrine assistant once more, was more than eager to take another trip to the more freeing atmosphere of the feudal past when Kagome suggested it a few weeks later.
“You mean it?? When do you wanna go?” he asked, laying on his back and holding Inutaro above his head. The quarter inu waved his arms and screeched happily, much to the annoyance of his father's sharp ears. Kagome giggled, pulled out a customary disposable camera and snapped another picture.
“Oi, not so loud, pup…” Inuyasha groused. Inutaro beamed down toothlessly at his father and let a line of drool slobber from his mouth. Inuyasha watched in slow horror as gravity carried the line of spit down to his face, slowly….
“We can go in a few days if you want! Do you have to talk to Jii-chan about shrine leave?” Kagome asked curiously. Inuyasha rolled on his side and cradled Inutaro against his chest, glad his t-shirt only received the wrath of spit and patted his back.
“He can go sit on a tack! We're going,” Inuyasha announced imperiously. Inutaro wriggled against his father's arms and rolled onto his back, puffing from the exertion.
Inuyasha leaned up on one elbow and rubbed his child's belly. “Come on! You can do it, pup!” Inutaro scrunched his face and howled. Kagome gave a sound of commiseration and knelt to roll her baby onto his tummy.
“There, better, sweetie?” she asked, rubbing his back. Inutaro grunted, grasping the carpet with his tiny hands and pulling.

Upon the next trip into the feudal past, Kagome and Inuyasha held their breaths when they climbed out of the well into the same old forest they both knew so well. A brief visit to Kaede's village assured them that she was still alive, and only weeks had passed since their last visit.
“Mah, this is bad for my health!” Kagome exclaimed, as she and her husband walked along to the exterminator village. Inutaro babbled happily, watching bugs hopping through the tall grass, and birds flying through the clear sky.
Inuyasha bounced Inutaro in his sling and nodded, a figure of red and white against the green of the forest. “I know what you mean, Kagome! We have to figure out what made the well do that,” he suggested. “Ah! Itai, pup, come on!”
Inutaro, capturing a handful of his father's loose hair, crowed in delight. Kagome opened his small fist gently and tickled his ears. “Heh, heh,” Inutaro panted happily while Inuyasha pulled his long hair over one shoulder.
“Eventually we should find out…I don't want to be worried sick to my stomach every time we go home and back,” she commented. Inuyasha slung one arm around his mate's small waist and squeezed.
“If that's the only worry we have in our lives, I'm all for it,” he drawled. Kagome smiled but smiled wryly to her husband.
“You know what I mean, Inuyasha. Why five years? Why now?” she asked. Inuyasha sighed.
“Okay, okay, we'll figure this out. For now, let's get back to the others,” he smiled. Kagome leaned her head against his shoulder as they walked and their son's laughs filled their ears.
Nothing much had changed at the exterminator village. The children were only weeks older, and the hunters were still young and carefree. Miroku was content and Sango was happy. Nozomi was sitting up also so Kagome sat Inutaro next to her to show off his new skills.
Shippou had brought his girlfriend over while she was fully human, no one commented on the strangeness of the pair as they all knew better. Kyoko was a sweet young woman, shy yet spirited and Kagome liked how Shippou's eyes glowed with happiness when she was around him.
A few days later, an old family friend came calling to the exterminator village. Due to his tiny size, nobody raised the call to lower the spiritual barrier and a tiny screech caught Hikaru's attention as she walked by the high walls. She ran to report to her mother and Sango jogged up, Hiraikotsu slung over one shoulder. The image of warrior clashed with her house kimono and apron, but Hikaru wouldn't doubt what her mother could do to whoever was making that sound!
“On the other side of the wall, baby?” Sango asked. Hikaru nodded seriously, her hands clasping the prayer beads her father had given her.
“Yes, mama! It sounded like it was in pain,” she added hopefully. Sango patted the top of her daughter's head and ordered the gate open. The barrier wouldn't harm a human signature so after Shun had wound the door open, she stepped out confidently. A moment later, Hikaru and Shun heard her sigh of exasperation and the call to drop the barrier.
“It's old Myogo-jiji!” she called. Miroku was brought to lower the barrier and watched his wife cradle the old flea demon in her hands.
“Just watch it, Myogo-jiji,” she said warningly, cupping her hands under him. Myoga mopped his brow and gave a weary smile.
“I wouldn't dream of it after that scare, honorable exterminator!” he called grandly. Sango sighed and let him hop down to the grass. Hikaru clung to Miroku's robes, staring as the flea hopped in search of their guests.
“What is that, Mama??” the child demanded. Sango held Hiraikotsu's handle and strode up to her husband and daughter.
“An old demon flea, but a friend of Inuyasha-san's family,” she said, careful to use the suffix the children should use with her friend. Miroku nodded and patted Hikaru's head.
“But you said he was a demon?” Hikaru asked, confused. What did her family do then? Miroku and Sango locked eyes and laughed.
“I'll explain that to you, daughter. First, we'll pray together, hmm?” Miroku said smoothly. Hikaru nodded, liking the quiet time she spent with Papa. The two went off hand in hand to the family graves and Sango dashed back to the house, to take possession of Nozomi since she left Kagome in charge of two babies.
Inside the large house, Myoga paid court to the youngest son of Inutaisho, bowing to his knee.
“Tell me what you want to say, old flea,” Inuyasha commanded and Kagome noticed his arrogant tone made the old vassal press his tiny brow harder into the tatami mats.
“Inuyasha, he's an old friend,” she murmured gently. Inutaro babbled and watched the tiny bug with interest. If he could only get to the floor and put him into his mouth….
“Inuyasha-sama! I did not come to bother you and Kagome-sama. I merely wanted to congratulate you on the birth of your son and heir!” Myoga hopped up and down eagerly. Kagome smiled modestly, patting Inutaro's back.
“Thank you, Myoga-jiji,” she blushed. Myoga bowed to her at the waist. Inuyasha gave a `keh' and crossed his arms, sitting cross-legged insolently.
“You have other news don't you? Spit it out,” Inuyasha suggested. When Myoga went into titles, such as heir, he was onto something of the inu family.
“Y-yes, well that is….Sesshomaru-sama has seemed to have started the courting rites for his future Lady of the Western Lands,” Myoga stammered as Kagome's face paled at the name of the Inu lord. Inuyasha scowled darkly, his left hand slapping over Tetsusaiga's hilt.
“And?” he ground out through clenched teeth. “Why should I care??” Kagome touched his sleeve softly.
“Inuyasha….”
“It is not to the point of you caring, Inuyasha-sama! I merely wanted to pass on the news…” Myoga demurred, bowing thrice to the floor. When Inuyasha didn't look appeased, he sweat further.
After a few moments of lofty silence, Kagome pressed on. “It's Rin isn't it?” she asked softly. Inuyasha looked at her, eyes concerned.
Myoga hopped up and down. “Well guessed, Kagome-sama! You are indeed right, his lordship is courting the woman Rin to be his future Lady.”
Kagome sat lost in thought a moment. While the child she knew had always been infatuated with Sesshomaru, would she still feel this way? She would want to be his Lady in all ways, and not be forced to like Kagome was, wouldn't she? Five years had passed…so Rin should be thirteen or fourteen. Old enough in this feudal age to marry and bear children. Kagome silently wished Rin all the luck she could hold.
“Kagome? You okay?” Inuyasha's voice rang with concern and Kagome smiled slightly to her husband.
“I'm just fine. Just fine. Inuyasha, is there any way for Inutaro to sleep with Nozomi-chan tonight?” she asked. Inuyasha's brows lifted and he stammered.
“I guess so…” Myoga smoked his tiny pipe, eyebrow lifted at the change in conversation.
“Good, because I need to be alone with you,” she whispered. Inuyasha nodded, his past concern for what his brother had done washing over him yet again.
“Thanks, Myoga, you can leave anytime,” he growled. Myoga doffed his hat but frowned at his lordship.
“I most certainly cannot! Your monk has to lower that abominable shield, first!”
After dinner and the babies were tucked in together in the room with Hikaru and Souta, Inuyasha held his mate carefully in his arms. Kagome was silent as he massaged her back carefully, working her past stresses away. Only when she rolled onto her back and pulled him down atop her did he take any pleasure for his own end.
End for now
