Chapter 3
Kagome and Hope moved away from the temple and made their way to their favourite spot. It was just the roof of one of the many skyscraper buildings, but this one wasn’t very tall. It was tall enough to look at the roads and streets around the building.
Kagome lazily removed her leather jacket and sat back in the sun. Hope rested at the edge of the roof, her head leaning over.
“Don’t fall off”
Hope looked back at her and gave her the look that said ‘stop pestering me’. Kagome sighed.
“I know I told you before, well I’m telling you again ‘k?”
Hope just looked away and back to viewing the roads... but suddenly she shot her head up down the road on their left. She stood to try and get a better view. Kagome grabbed her binoculars to see it was a deer.
As fast as InuYasha would have took off, both miko and youkai took off after the deer. Hope ran ahead the moment the deer noticed them. Kagome only barely keeping up.
The road they were in was filled with cars. Back in 2004, the military blocked off quite a few roads and they eventually filled up with cars and people trying to get to the harbour.
Kagome stood on one of the cars, aimed her weapon. But the deer managed to jump away between two trucks. She made a tut sound to which Hope pricked up her ears at the sound and dashed off after the deer again, Kagome following.
The deer, panting and exhausted, came to a dead end. They chased him towards an abandoned building that might have been a warehouse once, but his path was blocked by more huge trucks. The animal spun around to find a door way that lead to the building. The deer dashed into the darkness. Hope seeing this jumped in after him. Kagome saw her vanish and began to panic.
“Hope! Hope no! Come back!”
She poked her head in the abandoned building. There was no light. It was all pitch black. All that could be heard were drops of water and dust falling from the ceiling.
Getting the torch on her Eagles claw ready, her breathe coming in fast pants of fear, she stepped in the dark building to search for her neko friend.
She whispered loudly for her neko, but the only response she was getting was the eerie silence, expect the sound of the water falling from the ceiling. Kagome kept a hand over the lens of her gun torch as she didn’t want to reveal too much light in case there was something or someone there.
PWWWWWAAAAAHHHHH!
The scream jumped Kagome out of her skin and her breath went faster. It didn’t sound like a neko, since when Hope roars it sound like a tiger roaring.
“Hope” she whispered again. She followed the sound where the water was flooding and from where she thought the scream came from. Since she was covering the light, Kagome just barely managed to see the metal staircase.
Trying not to make so much noise clanging to the metal with her shoes, she had to hold her gasp when she saw a trail of blood....lots of it.
“Hope”
She followed the blood up the stairs and towards her left. She moved her hand slightly from the lens and flashed the light on the ground.
Kagome’s heart almost stopped dead when she came across an animal’s nose. It was white and black...like Hope’s.
She held her breath and walked towards the dead animal ready to breakdown if it came to worst. She reached the corpse and shone the torch on its face....
A huge sigh of relief washed over Kagome when the horns of the deer came into view. It looked like the deer’s neck was broken. Something in here must be in the shadows.
Kagome covered her light again as she whispered Hope’s name. Towards her left again was a pitch black room. The door was bashed down and Kagome could hear some rattling noises. Praying that it was Hope, Kagome slowly walked towards the edge of the door. She poked her head and gun around the corner to and let out her light a little...
Four hairless men stood there, as if sleeping on the spot. Kagome quickly averted and hid her light. It was the infected, the dark seekers. The ones she is trying to find a cure to. Their skin was how she saw all victims: their veins and arteries literally showing, their muscles look like a thin sheet of paper wrapped around the bones, the human skin was now a light greyish brown with red marks on sensitive areas like the armpits or the neck.
She had to hold her breath and aimed to go to the next room. But she couldn’t keep the level of noise down as her feet crunched on debris from the ceiling. She backed away as slow as she can until her ankle banged against something hard that sent an echo in the hall.
Kagome stood still to hear the sharp movements of the infected. Nothing came.
Must be deep sleepers.
Then a faint whimper came from the next room.
“Hope” she whispered. She followed the whimpering in the next room and shone her light calling her name. She halted when she saw the neko hiding in a corner.
“Hope. Come on we gotta go”.
Kagome noticed that Hope was retreating further back in the corner.
“Hope what are you doing? Let’s go” She still backed away until you couldn’t really see her at all.
Then Kagome found the reason why Hope was hiding. As Kagome slowly turned around, she could hear movement.
Holding her breathe, Kagome spun around to come face to face with a dark seeker male. He roared a death sickening scream before lunging at Kagome. So much for trying to come quietly.
Kagome shot the man seven times in the chest. He fell to his side, moaning in pain in a monstrous voice before dying. But his roar would have alerted the others in the building. Kagome dread to think how many were in there.
“Hope! We gotta go!”
Hope came out from her hiding place and ran after Kagome.
Kagome ran back to the entrance. She could hear them coming. Some of them were still wearing their shoes. She could hear the growls, coming closer. Suddenly she felt a clawed hand grip her left shoulder and a huge body trying to drag her back into the darkness.
But Kagome was back in the sunlight, the creatures roaring as the UV rays burnt their skin, forcing them back in the comfort of their lair.
Hope nuzzled her hand as Kagome stood up and sighed. It was time to set up the snare trap.

45 minutes later, Kagome’s trap was ready. She tied a piece of rope on a car on the bridge above and made a hoop at the other side of the rope. Then she tied her leather jacket around the rope and placed it at the entrance of the dark building. What was going to happen was this. When the prey is caught in the hoop, the heavy object would fall of a ledge and the prey would be wrapped around a blanket or some fabric and pulled to hang in the air until the predator returns.
With her trap in place, Kagome went to the truck where she told Hope to stay.
“Now listen. No matter what happens, don’t come out of here. If I don’t come back at night or dawn...” she stroked the neko around her neck. “Just go”.
Hope whimpered when Kagome returned to the entrance of the building. She took a sample of her immune blood and placed it in the middle of the hoop and jacket. She then smashed the tube and let the blood and its scent sink in the jacket. Kagome ran back to stand on top of one of the cars...and waited.
Silence and the wind was all that could be heard. Kagome waited for click of the trap.
She could hear some movement inside, some sniffing...
Click
The car fell from the low roof and the rope was pulled. A huge scream filled the air as the black jacket flew out of the doorway, ensnaring an infected, who was struggling to escape the leather.
Kagome whacked it around the head with the back of her gun and the creature silenced.
Mission complete. Another test for experimentation.
Before she could take her prey down, another roar made her look towards the door. A bold headed, muscular male went up to the door where sunlight was exposed, roaring at the immune human as she stared bewildered at him, his skin melting around his eyes, nose, cheekbones and mouth. The infected quietened and glared back before disappearing back into the darkness.
Kagome was taken aback. They never expose themselves in sunlight for that long. Could the virus be making them immune to sunlight?
Deciding this wasn’t the best time to stay and find out, she took her victim down from the trap, called for Hope and headed back to her sports car.

“Experimentation underway. Subject female aged 18 to 20 years of age at least. Possibly infected with KV. I’m going to run a test just to make sure” Again she was talking to the webcam.
Kagome took the infected woman back to her lab when she arrived home. She binded the woman with metal cuffs towards a table and a heart monitor set up as well. The PP was higher than the normal human heart rate, and her breathing was irregular and fast.
Kagome took out her small flash light and checked the woman’s eyes.
“Pupils fully dilated”. She took out the UV ray exposure and waved it over the woman’s arm, where she heard a painful sizzle. “High reaction to UV. Skin very thin, veins and arteries showing colours of black and purple. Subject is indeed infected with KV. Commencing to inject with serum 12.7 compound 6, experiment 6 2 12”
With that said Kagome took out the serum from her tray and injected it in the woman’s arm. Then she waited for a reaction.
The PP monitor began to slow. Her breathing became normal.
“PP’s dropping. 218... 212...205... 190 and decreasing. We could be getting something here...”
Suddenly the woman sat up and roared, just inches away from Kagome’s face. The infected woman became to struggle, trying to break free from her cuffs, but she looked in pain. She arched her back as the woman let out an ear wrenching scream before falling back on the table lifeless.
The monitor beeped... and stopped.
Kagome shook her head in disappointed. It didn’t work.
She went to the main desk, took out a KV serum and injected it carelessly into the woman’s torso. The infected took a deep breath as she came back to life, but her breathing returned to the fast state she was when she when captured. The PP monitor read her heart beat has reached 250.
Kagome leaned on a stack of trays, calmly saying: “experiment 6 2 12, compound 6 serum 12.7...ineffective on humans...”
“The date is Sept 12. Another failure. Still no cure” She put her webcam away then moved the woman behind the Plexiglas doors that was right at the back of the lab.

“Day 982 and I’m still unable to transfer my immunity to infected hosts. I’m one of the few humans immune to both airborne and contact to KV. Dogs and cats and most over animals are immune to airborne only” She stroked Hope on the head before saying to her. ‘We came in close contact to a hive today. As I said before I’m immune to both strains. The vaccine trail continues. The Krippn virus is indeed... tricky”.
“Behavioural note: an infected exposed himself to sunlight today. It’s possible its decreased brain function or their struggle to find food makes them ignore their weakness or survival instances. They don’t seem to understand human language any more. Traces of any human behaviour is gone”.
Kagome shut off her webcam as she completed her update. Still so much work to do but not today. Her alarm on her watch went off to say it’s 6pm. Time for some dinner.

“I told you, you should have eaten your vegetables”. Kagome was washing Hope in a soapy bath. Unlike most cats who hated the water, Hope was more of a tiger who loved to take a dip. Hope was whimpering because she was hungry and Kagome was trying to get her to eat more fruit and veg as meat was beginning to grow scarce.
Kagome placed her hands under Hope’s chin to get her to face her. “Hey you promise you eat what I food I give you and you won’t go hungry agreed?” Hope made a whimper that sounded like a ‘why can’t I have meat’ before she nodded her head.
Kagome then turned on the CD player to play BoA again while she washed Hope. The neko was able to understand human speech like most youkai could. Youkai in the modern world have fled the cites to keep away from infected. Some of the weak ones succumbed to the airborne and died. There wasn’t any infected Youkai as most are immune to the KV. If not all.
Suddenly the music and rushing water was blocked out of Kagome’s head as she recalled the horrifying moment’s darkness brings in the world now. She felt safer back down the well house. Even though none of the dark seekers go near the shrine because of the powerful protection aura in the surrounding area, she can still hear their roars in the streets.
Hope stared at her master in worry before ‘barking’ to get her attention. It did. Kagome waved her hand as the neko silenced while the woman got up and closed the black metal shutters all over the windows in her house.
That night she lied in bed with Hope curled up at the end. Both couldn’t get to sleep. Kagome covered her ears as the roars and monstrous cries of the infected echoed from the streets of Tokyo.

6/12/ 04 9:30pm
Kagome halted her car as she looked at the view in front of her. The military has blocked off the road.
“Why are we stopping?”
Kagome shook her head. “I don’t know”
Suddenly the private from earlier came and opened the door to her car. “Kagome we have to go by foot. Come on”
Everyone got out of the car and followed the private towards the harbour where over citizens where gathering. Ships and helicopters were leaving the area as people qued up to be scanned.
The military guarding the harbour wore face masks to prevent the infection. They had special scanners to see if any of the people wishing to leave where infected or not. The machines would turn green if it was ok while it would turn red if the person was no good and had to stay. InuYasha looked with interest as he watched the scanner allow two people through that were clean, and watch as a person who was scanned as infected taken back and moved behind a fence were guards prevented them from escaping. He was glad that Kagome can make concealment spells to make him look human.
Kagome got through with her family to be scanned. Souta turned around to look at the people who couldn’t leave. Never before he did feel so much pity. He looked and listened to a woman holding her wailing child as she spoke to him. He was shocked to find that her eyes were slightly bleeding but it didn’t seem to faze her.
“I’m- I’m not infected! Please take my baby. She’s not infected! Please don’t let her die...Please!”
He was dragged away as he was scanned.
“Clear”
He stepped past the barrier as his mother was scanned. But it beeped red.
“No good. Get her back”
“No-No wait”
Kagome turned around to find two soldiers’ dragging her mother away. “No stop!” She grabbed her mother by the arm, InuYasha helping her. Soldiers began to raise their weapons while people behind the barrier watched in silence.
“Stand down! Stand down soldier! Stand down!” Kagome ordered then approached the private when the struggling ceased.
“I am Lieutenant Kagome Higurashi. I’m ordering you to scan her again!”
The private took a moment before ordering the men to scan her again. Kagome watched the scan of the hand scanner, hoping it wouldn’t change red, it beeped green.
“Clear”
“Ok let her pass”
InuYasha knew Kagome was at higher rank but was the first time he saw her like this. He was really impressed on how she ordered the men and had power over them.
Kagome lead her family out while Souta turned his head around as he heard the woman from earlier call out to him.
“Wait! Please save my baby! Please!”
Kagome could only look away in shame but her family came first to her.
“Private how much time left?”
The private looked at his watch. “Five minutes”
An orange helicopter awaited Kagome’s family. Both Souta and their mother got in. Her mother gave Kagome a kiss on the neck while brother hugged her.
They all hugged InuYasha before they are dragged away by the private as the helicopter was beginning to take off. When they were a safe distance from the helicopter, Kagome blew them kisses and waved goodbye with tears falling from her eyes..
Both InuYasha and Kagome watched as the helicopter began to hover above the ground when...
