Chapter 2
6/ 12/ 04
“Kagome! Kagome! What is going on?!” her mother called, her 18-year old brother Souta right behind her. InuYasha was there also. Her grandfather passed away before she finished her University degree.
“Hurry get in the car!”
“Lieutenant! We have minutes” a soldier who was in the car in front of her shouted.
“Guys you’re going to the north at the moment until we can get you out of the country”.
They all got in the car: Kagome at the wheel, her mother right next to her with InuYasha and Souta sitting at the back.
“Kagome what is going on?” her mother asked as she got in the car.
“They’re sealing the city” she replied quietly before driving off after the private’s car which sped off a while ago.
“Sealing the city?”
“Yes. The military have sealed off the place as quarantine”
Her mother paused before asking:
“Has it advanced? Is it airborne?”
Kagome take a moment and looking at her passengers in the back before saying
“...maybe....”
InuYasha sighed.
“By the Gods...”
Just then muffled voices of the radio that was on, caught their attention. Mrs Higurashi couldn’t hear very well but her daughter can.
“Hold on it’s an update”
And she turned up the volume.
“Evening Tokyo...as you all know by now, the infection spreading across our streets has become a killer virus. Researchers now believe the virus will not only affect Japan, but spread out the seas towards every other nation in the world. So far nothing has been made to reverse the effects. This is our darkest hour. May Kami help us all”
“On other news, the mi-“
Kagome turned the radio off, hearing enough of what was going on.
“Kagome what did you mean by ‘you’? Aren’t you coming?” Souta asked.
“Kagome there is no reason for you to stay. Please come with us. You must leave wit-“
“Leave?” Kagome said that as if it offended her. “I can still fix this. I won’t let this happen!”
“Kagome you can’t just change something that could be out of your reach! Its-“
Before her mother could finish, a crimson smeared face, blood seeping from its mouth, crashed against her window.
Her mother screamed while Kagome spun the wheel....

Kagome slowly awoke as she recalled the night she got her family out of the house and into the car. Three years... Three years since that day....
Beep Beep Beep
There was the familiar alarm of her watch.
7am
Hope came to lick her face as a wake up call.
Kagome groggily whispered “Morning”.
She went downstairs, opening up the metal vents blocking the sunshine on the way. Still in her PJ’s (which was really a tank top and thinned-loose tracksuit bottoms), she made breakfast.
While Kagome missed her mother’s cooking, Kagome was quite good at it herself. At the moment she was trying to make her neko friend to eat fruit.
Before getting the food out, she went towards the TV, taking out a video tape from the shelf underneath it and played. It was a recording of a news broadcast. Though it was one of the cheerful ones, talking about how deep the snow was that year.
Kagome got the fruit, which listed of pineapples, grapefruits, oranges and cranberries. In the background, the TV rattled on.
“Well as you can see Carol, we have 4 inches of snow throughout the north eastern part of Japan. Christmas is definitely early this year as-“
“Here Hope, Just as you like” Kagome said while squeezing a squirt syrup bottle on the fruit salad. “Disgusting” she muttered.
She placed Hope’s breakfast on the floor next to her chair while she ate at the table watching the news, as if it was a normal day. Of course both human and youkai in the room knew it was far from normal.
Kagome noticed Hope fingering with her food.
“Hey eat your fruit. You need the good stuff in ya”
Hope looked at her as if to say ‘why not meat? That has good stuff ‘

At 9:30 am, Kagome went to the door underneath the stairs that led to her private room. Hope, not wanting to separate from her master, tried to squeeze through, but Kagome halted her.
“Ah you know better than that. Wait out here. I won’t be long”
Hope sat down and waited like an obedient dog.
Kagome closed the door and turned on the dim lights that led to her lab. She took her white lab coat and thin glasses on the hooks before locking the door and entering the room.
Like most labs, there were tons of shelves that held bottles with dangerous chemicals, computer monitors on the wall, and all sorts of equipment.
Kagome went to her computer and switched on her very small webcam. Then she began her update.
“Dr Kagome Higurashi. The date is Sept 18th 2007. Processing with serum experimentation 6 2 12. Subjects 1-20. Proceeding”.
She took the small webcam from the monitor and placed it on the edge of her glasses before walking up to a container covered with a black sheet. Making sure the lights were as dim enough for her to see, Kagome removed the sheet to reveal a lot of bumping heads on glass doors.
Rats... 20 of them. Most have lost their fur, their eyes bloodshot and their saliva in the mouth that was red. Maybe that was blood....?
Kagome shook her head. Another failed experiment.
“Numbers, 2, 3, 4, 7, 10, 15, 16, 18, and 20 all infected with KV. Numbers 1, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 ,14, 17, and 19” she looked at the dead corpses of rats “KV...killed the host.”
It looked like all rats have turned rabid. Just as she was about to release the poisonous gas in their cages, something caught her eye.
“Hold on”
Down at cage 6 was a rat showing normal behaviour. It wasn’t rabid, it didn’t look like it was dying, and it still had its fur and its eyes looked normal black.
“Compound 6 seems to show non- aggressive behaviour”.
She took out her UV ray torch and flashed it across the rat’s face and eyes. It didn’t show any signs of disliking the UV expect perhaps to have artificial sunlight in its eyes.
“No reaction to UV rays. Serum 12.7 injected in compound 6, the next trail for humans”

Hope happily followed Kagome towards the front door. Over the years in the military as a Dr, Kagome has been given permission to use weapons and bombs. Opening the cupboard in that was next to the front door entrance; she took her Eagles Claw, and also a tennis ball since Hope acts more of a dog then a feline. She has keys for Hino city: most for shops and houses she’s been to that she uses for shelter if she was too far away from her lab.
Putting in her small bag were test tubes, injections and other scientific stuff she might need to use. Also there was some rope in case she wanted to snare a trap on an infected host.
With everything she needed, Kagome stepped outside. Hope dashed out towards the top of the stairs, waiting for Kagome as she approached the God Tree on the shrine grounds.
Before, she was able to communicate with InuYasha with this tree when both were on different sides of time. Kagome still believed he could hear her, even if he wasn’t anywhere near the tree or touching for that matter. She touched the worn off bark from where he was sealed, and spoke.
“Hey InuYasha. I think I have found something. One of the rats I’m experimenting on hasn’t shown any of the virus’s infection yet. I’m hoping I’ve finally found something”.
There was silence before a sigh followed as she began again.
“I miss you...Please come back soon...InuYasha. I love you”
She could have gone down the well herself but she feels she can’t at the moment. Not with her duty to find a cure. She couldn’t leave behind her home which needed her help.
Kagome wiped away a stray tear before going down the steps towards her sports car.
She wasn’t much of a music person, but she loved BoA. Turning on her CD player she selected her favourite song, Everlasting.
Hope whined with the window closed. Kagome opened it and Hope placed her head out, looking as if she was smiling.
“Just how you like it” Kagome muttered before driving off down the street.
She turned around a couple of blocks before arriving at her destination: the video store. Taking her keys and her weapon she walked towards the door to unlock. She smiled at a guy wearing an orange hoodie and a Goth with piercings all over his head. Of course these weren’t real humans: they’re mannequins she set up outside the shop.
“Hey! Morning Leo! Morning matt! How’s it going?”
Being the last human in Tokyo and possibly the world was very lonesome. The only things that hasn’t broken Kagome is Hope, interacting with the mannequins, her work in the lab, and InuYasha who hasn’t returned for over 2 years.
As she unlocked the door, Hope trotted inside. Kagome wouldn’t really allow her to go in shops, but since no one is really here the rules can be broken.
“I’ll see ya later you two”
The video store was just as it was before the virus broke out in 2003. Expect there were mannequins Kagome set up in here as well. Now and then she would wave a hello or smile at them as if it was a normal day.
She put away a DVD she borrowed and took out a new one before making her way towards the front desk. There was a mannequin that she set up as the store’s owner.
“Morning Taka. I’m halfway through the series. How’d it go for your son’s...”
Then it was here that Kagome would return to her senses and acted serious again.
“Never mind. Come on Hope”.

She and Hope had made their way to a corn field Kagome planted in one of the parks hidden behind the tall behinds. Kagome was gathering corn and returned to her car before getting out her map to see the next apartment building to raid.
On the 5th floor she bashed down the door to apartment 123. Hope rushed in while Kagome got her gun ready. Seeing that it was safe, she praised Hope for not making a sound.
The apartment smelt terrible. Kagome was surprised Hope didn’t run back out. The room was a mess. Newspapers, magazines and litter all over the living room floor but the rest of the house were clean. There was a Christmas tree tucked in the corner decorated with silver and purple ball balls. The virus got worse at Christmas and a lot of people succumbed to the effects of the virus then.
Kagome opened the windows to let in some light. She scavenged the coffee table, the kitchen units to see anything of food wise to take home. Most of the cupboards were empty until she spotted some tinned meat and cat food.
“Here Hope look. Chicken flavoured.” Hope sniffed the tin and made a small sound that sounded like she approved of it.
Kagome searched through a bunch of CD’s but when there wasn’t a track she liked, she decided it was time to go. She crossed the apartment of her map, and then called to Hope to leave.
As they made their way to the front door, another room caught her eye.
“Hold on Hope. Wait at the door”
Kagome made her way to the bedroom. The bed was covered with a white sheet with quarantine labels all over. There was a shadow she could see inside. The victim’s body was still there. That could explain the stench.....
On her right was another door that led to another room. There was a note decorated with a red ribbon. The font was written in kanji and read:
Don’t open till Christmas! Love Molly
Kagome slowly opened the door... and held her breathe. *
Inside was a yellow painted bedroom, with a cot and baby clothes hung on the cupboard and also folded neatly on a chair. Toys were still wrapped up in their boxes. Everything was untouched.
Kagome had to hold her tears back. Apparently this woman’s husband didn’t know his wife was pregnant and was planning to surprise him. It would have given him a heart attack but he would have been happy Kagome thought.
Deciding she has seen enough, Kagome closed the door and made her way outside.

My name is Kagome Higurashi. I’m a survivor in Tokyo city. I will be at the Takahata Fudo Buddhist temple everyday at midday. If anyone is out there... you’re not alone
Kagome listened to her own radio broadcast that morning. She sent a broadcast throughout countries that could understand Japanese and also made an English broadcast for people in Europe or America.
She first sent them out two years ago after the virus wiped out 90% of the worlds human population.
As it was getting close to midday, Kagome heads for her next destination: Takahata Fudo Buddhist temple. The temple was also being taken over by vines and grass. Even the stature of Hijikata Toshizó was covered in them.
Like every day, Kagome would sit on the desk she set up inside the shrine and open up her laptop while throwing the ball for Hope to play fetch with. But as an hour passed as usual, no one came.
But coming here was tranquilly to Kagome. The breeze is not cold but not very warm either, birds singing, crickets hopping and the calm ripples of the river. Sometimes Kagome would play Tai-chi or Zen garden music to listen with the nature sounds, which really relaxed her. She would even do tai-chi as well. Performing Tai-chi under the ruffling trees was heaven for Kagome.
Hope, having enough of playing fetch, lazily slept in the sun. Kagome sighed. She wanted to doze off too, but refused to. She couldn’t relax for long. She had to get going soon.
Whilst listening to some tai-chi, Kagome stared at her view. Despite the fact of the tranquilly of nature re-growing its former beauty, the ugly reminder of human civilization that once ruled the world could be seen from the tall skyscraper buildings.
All the streets were quiet expect for the sounds of bugs and birds. No car was moving; all of them were parked or deserted. Grass and other foliage were towering in between the concrete cracks of the roads and pavements.
At least we won’t have to worry about global warming Kagome thought, jokingly. Of course it didn’t make her smile or laugh one bit. Everyone she ever had. Everyone she ever knew aside from her friends in the past is dead, splattered, gone.
Kagome was the last one left who didn’t commit suicide or has yet to lose her sanity.
