Chapter 5
Beep Beep Beep
Kagome awoke from the digital alarm on her watch. Groaning, she got up, dressed, turned on the TV, and made breakfast.
“...taking a closer look at the mutations of Dr. Krippn’s once hailed miracle cure for cancer and HIV. Almost 5,000 patients have been recorded with a virus that has begun to have symptoms similar to the early onset of rabies. 25 patients have already died. Dr Higurashi has ordered all local hospitals to stop viral drugs, and begin limitary quarantine programs...”
Kagome wasn’t paying much attention. She saw this over and over before. She was busy looking at her calendar, and was taken aback slightly at the date.
“It’s...my birthday”
Hope looked up from her breakfast. There was sympathy in her eyes and her face was obviously congratulating her.
Today Kagome 26, but she had no one to celebrate her birthday with...expect Hope. She could just go down the well, forgot about everything, but then...there would be no future. No. She had to continue.
I am immune
She may be the only human left immune to the virus.
I am the last human
Considering all these years no one has met her at the temple at midday, Kagome was beginning to think she is the last human in the world.
I am the last hope
She is the only one left to find a cure. She couldn’t celebrate her birthday. Kagome still has a mission to accomplish.

My name is Kagome Higurashi. I’m a survivor in Tokyo city. I will be at the Takahata Fudo Buddhist temple everyday at midday. If anyone is out there... you’re not alone
“I haven’t seen anyone for three years....” Kagome sighed after hearing her radio broadcast again that morning.
Kagome and Hope wandered through the streets, carrying on their ‘normal life’, waiting at the temple, gathering crops, fishing in the museum, playing fetch, and taking another DVD out of the store. Near the end of the day Kagome drove back towards her shrine, talking to Hope.
“Hey listen. If you’re planning a party or something, let me know. I don’t like surprises...but I’ll act surprised. I-“
She halted her car as she noticed something at the end of the street. Getting out with her gun and Hope by her side she walked up to the blood stains on the wall. She never noticed it before when she passed this area.
She stood to inspect it then...
Click
A taxi fell from the bridge... and Kagome was swept off her feet. She didn’t have time to realize that it was a snare trap until she felt a horrific pain shot up her skull. She felt herself slipping away into darkness, only able to hear Hope who was jumping on her hind legs trying to reach her master, roaring at her to stay awake, while tiny drops of Kagome’s blood dripped on the concrete below...

Beep Beep Beep
Kagome came too after hearing her alarm watch. She thought it was still light when actually, it was dusk. Hope was still there and jumped on her legs again when she saw her master waking up.
“Alright....Alright” she said trying to calm the youkai down. Kagome had to get out the trap. Infected would be out in the streets this time of evening. She had to get back to the shrine before they sniff out her blood and Hope’s scent. It was clear the infected haven’t lost their human intelligence as she thought they might have.
The hunted learns from the hunter it seems...
She mentally smacked herself for this.
Getting her knife out of her boot, she tried to cut her bind. But she was dizzy at the moment that she fell back again. Frustration getting to her, Kagome tried again. This time she broke free and fell in the puddle...but failed to point the knife upwards.
She screamed her voice box out of audio as the knife struck her in her upper leg. Hope sniffed and licked Kagome’s face while she took deep breathes to try to stand, only to fall again. Instead, placing her arms behind her, she dragged herself on the ground back towards her car.
The sun was still out; the rays were still poking in between the gaps of the buildings. So she still had a chance to get back home.
Suddenly, Hope stopped, glaring at the hole in the railed fence that led to one of the banks. She growled as barking could be heard from the darkness. Infected dogs..
Kagome desperately called Hope to back away.
“No! Hope we gotta go! Come on!” Hope did back away with her but never teared her gaze from the imitating sound.
Kagome saw shapes appearing from the darkness. An infected man stepped out with two dogs leashed in front of him. The animals were just like the infected humans, skin and bone, arteries and veins showing, saliva coming from their mouths which looked like blood.
The infected human released the dogs as they bounded after the pure human and youkai. Kagome didn’t realize there was another dog right behind the man. The man went back in the shadows while the dogs ran after their prey. They yelped and backed away when a ray of sunlight coming, but rapidly disappearing, from in between the buildings remained. They barked in haggled breaths.
Hope roared, looking ready for a fight while Kagome called her to get back to the car. She realized she left her Eagles claw where she was ensnared. But she had a handgun on her car seat.
“Hope, come back!”
Kagome eventually managed to stand limped to her car. The sun ray disappeared and the dogs came.
Kagome was sitting on the ground again as she grabbed her handgun and fired at the dog that leapt at her. The canine fell dead on her lap, shot through the neck.
The other two dashed faster than Kagome could see. One of them went after Hope. Kagome tried to fire at the dog attacking her friend but she didn’t see the other coming. It leapt at her, making Kagome drop her weapon while she held back the animal that tried to bite her face.
She barely managed to turn her head to see how Hope was fairing with her fight. Hope was pushed to the ground...and the dog held her down and bit her around the neck.
“No!” Kagome couldn’t lose her! She already lost so many she knew and loved! She wasn’t going to let her friend die too! She was the only company and companion she had left. With that, Kagome struggled to get the dog on top of her off, but failed as her strength was failing. But using all the skills she has learnt over a short career there was a loud crack, and the beast fell limb and lifeless it’s neck broken. She grabbed her gun and shot the last remaining dog alive.
Kagome sat up to breath a huge sigh, but was brought back to the scene as she heard whimpers and moans coming from her youkai companion. She turned to see Hope limp towards her, few deep scratches on her legs and the nasty bite wound around her neck. The neko slumped and fell on her belly, whimpering.
Kagome caught up, ignoring her own pain, and limped to her youkai, inspecting her wound.
“Hope! Hope...look at me! Hope, look at me girl.”
But the neko was too weak. Kagome held her friend’s chin to face her. “It’s ok Hope. It’s ok. I’m taking you home” Even though Hope was just as big as a wolf, she was very light. Kagome had no problems lifting Hope up. The neko whimpered again as she was placed in the car.
Before she forgot, Kagome ran to get her Eagles Claw...

Digging through her draws and cupboards for the serum, Kagome pulled out the tray with the serum she used for her last experimentation. Hope was lying on one of the tables in her lab, breathing heavily.
Kagome got the serum ready, but hesitated. This was Serum 12.7 used for compound six. It may not have worked for humans, but kept the rat healthy. Maybe it would work on youkai too. It has too!
She injected Hope with the serum, before picking her up and slumping down against the cabinets, holding her in her lap, her head under her chin. Kagome stroked her neko on the head while singing her favourite song softly to her. Hoping and praying that Hope will make it.
She kept singing as she saw no effects of the serum. Kagome felt something in her hand. She removed her hand from the neko’s head to see fur stuck to her fingers and palm.
No
Kagome stopped singing to look at Hope’s eyes. They were bloodshot. She looked at her teeth. The gums were red and bleeding. Kagome sighed, not baring to look at the neko. The youkai breathing grew into a growl, and then suddenly she roared and tied to snap at her owners face.
Kagome held her down, and her grip tightened. She squeezed and squeezed as hard as she could, not looking at the neko’s face. She kept looking away towards the ceiling, holding her breath.
All the miko could hear were her own heart, the neko’s gasping breath and her claws scraping against the stone ground as she tried to escape Kagome’s grip. Her grip grew tighter, trying to hold the neko still. She couldn’t bear to look, not at Hope. Not what was happening, what she was doing.
Please....Please
The struggling grew weaker, the scratching sounds slowed. Tears began to leak at the corner of Kagome’s eyes as she griped the neko harder.
Then suddenly...nothing. Nothing but silence. There was no more scratching, no more gasps, no more movement. Kagome let out the air she was holding in a shaky breath. She loosened her grip as Hope’s limp body fell from her arms. Kagome finally gave the courage to look at Hope. She was still, The infection that was just beginning to show was evident on her body.
Tears fell down her cheeks and onto the furry body. Hope was gone.
There would be no more waking up calls from Hope.
No more holding her soft body.
No more singing to her.
No more companionship.
Kagome held Hope’s body and wept.

She buried Hope at the temple and drove back home, occasionally staring at the empty chair beside her.
For the first time ever, Kagome knew that there was no one else to turn to for companionship. She was truly alone...alone when no else is around.
Silent tears fell down her cheeks.
Alone...How much she hated that word.
