Chapter 5: Ashocking discovery for a not so plain Jane

Kagome blinked her eyes slowly as the picture of her room came into focus. She sat up in her bed and stretched her arms. She smiled as she looked at the sun coming into her window. She stood up and slipped on some slippers and went into her living room and turned on her stereo. She pressed the triangle and immediately Counting Crow's "Accidentally Falling in Love" came blasting out of the speakers. Kagome was only in little booty pants and a cute logo, ringer tee. She started dancing around the room and throwing her hair everywhere. She was going crazy! She danced into her room as she brushed her teeth and while she combed her hair, she took the brush and started singing into it like it was a microphone. She pulled on some jeans and kept on the tee, and fell onto her bed giggling as the music ended. Another song was replaced, but she turned it down and continued her morning routine. She pulled out the classifieds and started job hunting. She took a highlighter and had a huge bag of Doritos (A/N: ha ha, for breakfast). She dove right in. *Close up on clock. 15 minutes goes by, 30, 45, hour, 2 hours….* Kagome's bag of chips was empty and she had slumped down onto the table. That's when the phone rang.

"'Lo?" she said groggily.

"Hi Kagome! It's Rin!" Kagome immediately perked up. "And Sango!" said another voice. (A/N: if you are confused lemme clear this up- Sango and Rin are 3-waying Kagome).

"Hey you guys!" Said Kagome, very happy considering that she had never really had friends that called her before.

"Are you busy today?" asked Rin. "Or tonight?" chimed in Sango.

"Nope, at the moment I am jobless so I think that I could safely say I am open!" She said brightly.

"Great! Because me and Sango are going to the mall and then we want you to sleep over!!! It's kind of like a ritual- we have these girl parties while the guys stay in their rooms like good little boys!"

"Wait, so you live with Miroku and Sesshomaru?"

"And Inuyasha. Technically it's not all the same apartment. It is like separate apartments, but they have adjoining doors. But enough about that! Do you wanna come?" Said Sango eagerly, instantly being echoed by Rin.

`Do I wanna come? DO I WANNA COME? OF COURSE I WANNA COME!!!' thought Kagome. "Of course! That sounds great!"

"Yes! Ok well we'll leave to pick you up now, is that okay?"

"Sure! Do you know where I live though?"

"Yah, we threatened to flush Inuyasha's tetsusaiga down the toilet until he told us." Said Rin casually. "Riiiiiiiin!" Said Sango angrily.

"Wait, what's his tetsusaiga?" asked Kagome.

"Oh nothing, we'll explain it to you later! Bye!" Kagome heard a click and wondered why they were in such a rush all the sudden. She shrugged it off and started to clean up her mess. She continued onto her room where she casually tossed her pajamas, a toothbrush, and some clothes for the next day into an old bag and grabbed her purse as well. She felt funny seeing as she hadn't been to a sleepover since she was very young, but then again, she was never really the type to grow out of things like having a night with your friends. She smiled at that. She had friends. Real friends!

Kagome heard a knock at the door which threw her out of her little "trance" and she walked excitedly across the room. She opened the door and saw 2 smiling faces waiting for her.

"All ready to go Kagome?" asked Sango.

"Yah, just let me get my keys… come in, I'll be really quick." Kagome replied. Sango and Rin walked into Kagome's apartment and sat down on the couch. Kagome quickly reappeared.

"I like what you've done with the place…." Trailed off Rin.

"Thanks, but honestly it's a hunk of junk that I can barely afford." She said jokingly.

"Well what are we waiting for? The shops await us!" Said Sango who stood up and put her arm through Kagome's and Rin following suit with Kagome's other arm. They walked out and down to the car. Kagome tossed her bag into the trunk and kept her purse with her as they sped off towards the mall. They blasted the radio and Kagome let her hair get tangled in the wind when they put the top down on the convertible. She felt free, accepted. `How could so much have changed in just one day?' she mused. Well, she didn't have much time to think about that, seeing as they were already pulling into the parking lot of the triple decker mall. Sango placed her sunglasses on her head after running her hands through it to get rid of the tangles as they walked through the front doors. They didn't waste any time, and before she knew it Kagome had an armful of clothes as she walked into a dressing room. Kagome was trying on a sexy, little blue dress while Sango critiqued Rin's outfit as she modeled it in front of the mirrors.

"I don't know Rin…. the style is cute enough, but that color doesn't go with you at all." Said Sango.

"Really, I like the color, I just want it a little smaller, I feel like an old grandma there's so much slack on this thing." Said Rin as she adjusted the dress.

"Oh please Rin, if that thing was any tighter, Sesshomaru would never be able to get you out of it!"

Rin gave her a fake shocked look. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Don't play dumb Rin. You may be a few rooms away, but I think the whole building could hear you two last night!" laughed Sango.

Rin turned red. "Yah well what about you and Miroku, huh? Should I just start calling Miroku pony boy?"

"You heard that?!?" gasped Sango.

Rin smiled slyly. "That's right. And I also know all about his……"

Sango clapped her hand over Rin's mouth. "Sssshhh! You win, okay?"

"That's what I thought." Said Rin, her tone almost echoing Inuyasha's.

"So Kagome, how are things with you and Inuyasha?" Called Sango. Kagome was temporarily shocked at hearing her name called, seeing as she had been listening so intently.

"Um…. Uh….. well…" she said.

"It's okay, we won't tell anyone if it's on the rocks." Said Rin.

"No, no, no! It's not that, he's actually really sweet once you get past that attitude of his." Kagome blushed recalling the night's episode, being glad that no one could see thanks to the dressing room she was still in.

"Smells like romance." Said Sango.

Rin laughed. "So then he kissed you?"

Kagome blushed even deeper. "W-what?" she said.

"Don't bother trying to deny it Kagome, Rin knows everything about everything when it comes to relationships." Said Sango knowingly.

"Well then, yah." Kagome admitted.

The other two girls grinned. At that moment, Kagome stepped out of the dressing room.

Sango gasped excitedly. "Oh my god Kagome that looks SO good on you!!"

Rin agreed with a nod of her head. "Oh yah, that'll definitely get Inuyasha's attention…"

Kagome blushed. She felt like if she blushed anymore she would die of the heat. "Do you always have to pry into other people's love lives Rin?" asked Sango.

"Yes. It's like, my job or something."

Sango huffed. "Fine, fine, I'll lay off…" said Rin with her hands up.

Sango turned back to Kagome. "You should totally buy this outfit." Kagome looked in the mirror and admired her reflection. She was wearing tight blue jeans with sleek velvet, black boots. Her top had a built-in bra that was slightly revealed so it was very tight material in dark blue. Over it was a loose lighter blue material that was literally draped from her neck and two thin straps that linked around her back from her sides kept it in place. Kagome admitted it was an awesome outfit, but then she looked at the price tags.

"I wish I could, but I don't really have the money." She sighed. "I guess that's the downside of window shopping." She said as she began to return to the dressing room.

Sango grabbed her arm. "Wow, wow, wow. Slow down there. There is no such thing as window shopping when you are friends with me." She said. She dug in her purse and took out a small blue piece of plastic. "Here ya go! Go crazy!" she said.

Kagome gaped at the credit card. "I couldn't take that Sango…"

"Well actually you can, your sense of moral won't allow you too." Said Rin stupidly.

Sango put the card in Kagome's hands. "Look, I don't mean to toot my own horn, but my club isn't exactly going to close down overnight- I hardly ever use this card and you can just consider it an early birthday present!"

"My birthday was two weeks ago…" said Kagome.

"Well then consider it a VERY early birthday present!" she said happily.

"Wouldn't it be easier to just call it a late birthday present?" said Rin.

"Yes, but I don't take the easy way out." Said Sango.

"That made no sense."

"Who said it did?"

"Sango, do yourself a favor and stick to shopping not conversation…" said Rin.

Kagome laughed right as Sango's cell phone rang. "Sango here." She said casually.

Kagome and Rin waited while Sango nodded at the muffled voice on the other end of her phone. "Okay, we're just gonna check out and get something to eat, I'm starving!" she said. There was a little more silence. "Ok then! Love ya babe." She finished as she closed her cell phone.

"Babe? What did he have to do for that sort of talk?" said Rin musingly.

"What, can't I talk sweet to my boyfriend?" Sango said innocently.

"Whatever it is he did Sango, whatever it is he said, I'll find out…. I'll know…. Don't try to hide it Sango… I know everything…." She said dramatically.

"Whatever Rin. Anyway, that was Miroku obviously, and he said that Kaede is over and the guys need us home." She looked straight at Rin. Rin nodded knowingly. "Okay, let's check out then!" Rin said happily as she gathered her items of clothing. Sango followed as well and Kagome quickly changed into her other clothes. As Kagome picked up the outfit she was going to buy Sango came over and added a dress that Kagome had tried on earlier. "Go ahead, it looks good on you and I saw you practically drooling over it before you even had it on." She said. Kagome grinned as they bought the clothes and walked out. They stopped at a Mc Donald's and bought some meals for themselves and the guys. They talked happily until the three arrived at the expensive apartments. Kagome gaped as she had at Inuyasha's car.

"You guys live here??" she said.

"Like I said Kagome, that club is pretty damn useful." Said Sango.

"I'm just lucky enough to be in love with Sesshomaru." Said Rin. "My family was killed and I can barely remember them- Sesshomaru practically saved me from the streets." She said quietly. Sango put her arm over Rin's shoulder and Kagome suddenly felt a whole new connection to these people. Both girls had lost their families. She felt like she could relate to them- as though, they could understand her better than other people could. They sort of walked quietly until they got into the elevator, where Rin broke the ice that she had created and they once again talked happily until the elevator doors opened up to a small circular room that had a couch and 3 doors.

"Come on, Miroku said that they were in Sesshomaru's." Said Sango as she led them to the center door. It was unlocked and they walked in to see a very large and very incredible room. It had two small steps that ran in a circle around the room that led to a sunken in living room that was very large and contained an expensive entertainment system and black, leather furniture. There was a curved glass window that had a view of the city that spanned an entire wall on the far end of the room and on the left there was a hall that lead to the bathrooms and bedrooms. On the immediate right was a very modern looking kitchen and past the bar was a dining room table with hanging lights. Everything in the apartment was very modern and sleek. It also had a lot of black, which indicated it was Sesshomaru's place, but every here and there was a splash of color which showed that Rin lived there as well. Sesshomaru sat in an armchair, Inuyasha and Miroku were on the couch, and an older woman that Kagome didn't recognize sat in another arm chair.

Sango hung her purse up on the wall next to the door and slipped her shoes off below, whereas Rin simply dropped her purse on the ground and kicked off her shoes wherever they happened to land. Rin pranced over to Sesshomaru and sat on his lap, giving him a kiss as he wrapped his arms around her. Inuyasha and Miroku stood up together to get the food that Sango and Kagome were holding.

"It's about time ya got here Sango, how long does it take to shop, huh?" said Inuyasha as he tried to take food from the bag Sango was holding. Sango shook her head at him. "Try the other bag, this one only has mine and Miroku's." She said. Inuyasha walked over to Kagome, who immediately wished she had fixed her hair before she got out of the car. "Hey." He said as he put his hand on her cheek and gave her a kiss. Kagome blushed at the greeting as well as the fact that everyone else in the room was watching. She put a finger on his lips to stop him for moment and craned her head over his shoulder.

"Would you all move on please?! We aren't an exhibit yah know!!" She shouted. She turned back to Inuyasha. "Anyways…" she said, but was stopped as Inuyasha kissed her again. There was a small "ahem" next to them and they broke apart to see Miroku. Inuyasha growled slightly. "What is it Miroku?" Miroku smiled at him.

"I don't mean to interrupt…" Inuyasha snorted. "A little late for that isn't it?" Miroku just continued. "…. but you have yet to introduce Kagome to Kaede and also, Sango was wrong. She had the bag with your food in it, you are currently standing in the way of me and my meal." He finished as he pointed to the bag in Kagome's hands. Kagome smiled guiltily as she handed the bag to Miroku. Inuyasha lead Kagome over to the couch.

"Kagome, this is Kaede." Said Inuyasha.

"Hello Kagome, I am glad I finally get to meet ye." Said the old woman. She wore an eye-patch and also had very old fashioned red pants and white shirt on, complete with socks under her sandals. Kagome shook her hand. "It's nice to meet you." She said politely. After everyone had settled down, they ate their meals with conversation mainly dominated by the girls telling everyone else what had happened at the mall. Rin cleaned up and then resumed her seat on Sesshomaru's lap. Kaede cleared her throat. Everyone immediately silenced. Kagome got the feeling that everyone there new something that she didn't.

"Kagome, there was a reason that I needed to meet ye today." Kagome just stared at her, sort of confused, but serious all the same.

Kaede continued. "Tell me Kagome, have ye ever had any strange happenings in your life?"

"Hmm? I don't understand…" said Kagome.

"Have ye ever felt strange about a person? Have ye ever felt as though something bad was approaching…."

Kagome thought hard. "Well, I have always had a knack for sensing if a person can be trusted, but I just thought that was instinct…. Right?"

Kaede shook her head. "Wrong. Kagome, I could tell right away when ye walked through the door- ye are much more than an ordinary human. You Kagome are a miko."

"W-what?" said Kagome weakly. She felt as though someone had just hit her head with a ton of bricks. She looked around to everyone. "This must be some sort of joke, I can't be a miko, how would I have not known?" she said, the confusion and shock still in her voice though.

"Not all mikos have the ability to detect their powers until something or someone brings them out. When ye met Inuyasha, he may have possibly stirred up the power that lies inside of ye."

"I don't get it- why are you telling me this?" asked Kagome.

"Because that isn't all." Said Sesshomaru, speaking up for the first time.

Kagome looked around at her new friends more confused then ever. "I-Inuyasha?"

Inuyasha looked her in the eyes and took her hand. Kagome looked back to Kaede.

"Kagome come here." Kagome stood up after glancing nervously at Inuyasha, not knowing what to expect. Kagome kneeled in front of Kaede. Kaede reached her hand out towards Kagome's heart. She closed her eyes and a wind picked up that circled around Kagome. Kagome suddenly started to glow a bluish pink color. Kagome closed her eyes as she felt a pain over her heart. Kagome put her head back as her hair blew wildly and she gritted her teeth in pain. Inuyasha heard her whimpers and went to stand up when Miroku put his hand out.

"No Inuyasha, it has to happen." He said seriously. Everyone watched in awe as a small pink and blue jewel was drawn from Kagome's body. Kaede opened her eyes and put Kagome's hands over the jewel that was currently hovering in the air. Kagome opened her eyes as well and put a hand over her heart, still recovering from the pain. Inuyasha immediately went to her and put his hand on her shoulder. Kagome lifted her hands up and opened them to reveal the small jewel. She stared in awe at what had just been extracted from her body. Everyone else stared just the same.

Sango spoke up. "Is it really the--?"

"Shikon No Tama. Yes, it has been inside of Kagome. She is its sole guardian." Said Kaede. "The Shikon No Tama- or Jewel of four souls- is very powerful and can bring the end of all of us if in the wrong hands Kagome."

"Kaede, I don't understand- what am I supposed to do with it?" said Kagome.

"That Kagome, only time will tell. For now ye must do all ye can to protect it."

Kagome was in shock. How could she be not only a miko, but have a powerful and legendary jewel to protect? How could she go from being just Kagome to a guardian priestess overnight? It was all so much to take in at once.

"And what about her powers? Shouldn't she learn how to control them?" asked Miroku.

"Yes, but for now, I believe that we should return the jewel back to Kagome's body and let all of this sink in. I shall train her soon enough." Said Kaede.

Miroku nodded. Kagome opened her palm and the jewel hovered in the air again. She closed her eyes and after here aura glowed the jewel slowly returned to her body. She stood up as did Kaede.

"I am sure ye have much to talk about, although not all of the answers can be provided. Good day to ye all, I shall be in touch." And with that she walked out the door, leaving an awkward silence behind her.
