InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Last Lifeline ❯ Getting back in the swing of things ( Chapter 19 )
Kanaye: hey all! I just bought Ashlee Simpon's CD and I really like it- especially "Lala" it is so good! "You can dress me up in diamonds, you can dress me up in dirt, you can throw me like a lineman, I like it better when it hurts- oh I have waited here for you, I have waited- you make me wanna la la in the kitchen on the floor! I'll be you're French maid when I meet you at the door! I'm like an alleycat, drink the milk up I want more! You make me wanna, you make me wanna, scream!" lol I would totally continue but I am going to write the next chapter! I just hope the power doesn't go out before I finish this- there is a huge storm outside. Well here ya go!
Chapter 13: Getting back in the swing of things
"Focus now… focus…. find it and bring it forth- that's it, now direct it to your target- imagine it hitting the target…" directed Kaede. A blue and pink light began to surface throughout Kagome's body. Her eyes were closed and her brow was furrowed in concentration. She had earlier sculpted a large lump of sand for a target and it was about 30 feet away from her. She had started closer and moved her way farther away. Now she was kneeled in the pristine sands, the energy growing hot on her flesh. Suddenly without warning her eyes snapped open and her energy shot forth in a snaking stream. It absorbed into the mound and the mound began to shake violently, and exploded from the inside. Kagome shielded her eyes against the tiny dirt storm she had created. That was one of her more difficult powers she had discovered. There was her first and most simple, which was simply emitting a shock out to anyone who touched her. Then there was getting the energy to hit someone from a distance, but only flesh wounds. There were many different forms for that, different approaches for different target areas. Finally she was beginning to master her next step up, which was sending out the energy and attacking from the inside. She still had to learn how to learn how to hit specific areas. There was one that she really wanted to know- one of her most extreme attacks. Where she could send the energy straight to the enemy's heart, where the heart would take the full blow, causing an instant death. The hearts demise would somewhat resemble the explosion of the sand mound, but the flesh would not be affected. She would move on to start the preparations for that, but she had been training for 24 straight hours. There must have been something in the tea because she would not usually be able to go for this long. She was physically ready to collapse, but her head was full (maybe because she was in it…).
"Amazing. I've never seen such incredible power before- not even from Ki-!" Kaede stopped herself. "Well done. Now I think ye should get home and have some well deserved rest." Kagome would have argued had every muscle in her body not ached, so she nodded her head and then stopped abruptly.
"Kaede- how do we get out of here? Oh no! I'm gonna be stuck in my mind and go crazy!!!" she panicked.
"Calm down child. It is simple enough for ye to remove yourself. You take reverse steps. Sit." She gestured. Kagome sat down.
"Close your eyes as ye did before. Good. Now once again imagine your mind's escape- do ye have it etched in your mind?" Kagome nodded with her eyes still closed.
"Now imagine all the details of this place dissipating into white nothingness." Kagome did so, watching her paradise be reduced to empty white inside her eyelids. When it was blank, she opened her eyes and found herself back under the tree outside Kaede's hut, the air relatively the same as when she had left, for in this world only 24 minutes had passed. Kagome stood up to stretch, letting out an exhausted yawn.
"Kaede?" said Kagome in an airy voice.
"Mm?"
"Can you drive me home? I'm feeling…. *YAWN*….. a little sleepy…" she went off. Kaede nodded and lead Kagome to the car. The drive back was uneventful. Kaede turned the car off and woke Kagome up. She had fallen asleep during the ride.
"Thank you so much Kaede. You have no idea how much this means to me. Well you might, and if you do than you understand that it's a lot!" she said with as much energy as possible. She hugged Kaede.
"Ye are an incredible child. Ye are strong and I have complete confidence in ye." She said with a hand on her shoulder. "Now go get some rest." Kagome nodded and got out of the car, waving goodbye until the car disappeared at the next street corner. As Kagome walked to the elevator she mused at how much she had been at Inuyasha's apartment. She could barely remember what hers looked like anymore. She smiled to herself as she walked into the lobby. She opened the door to Inuyasha's apartment and a wave of complete safety washed over her. She felt so protected and at home here. She hung her keys up and removed her jacket. She tugged at her ponytail and let her hair fall softly over her shoulders. Lastly, she kicked her shoes off and walked into Inuyasha's room. After pulling the covers down, she collapsed onto the bed. She snuggled into the sheets and inhaled Inuyasha's scent that was surrounding her. She was asleep within 30 seconds.
About 10 minutes later….
Inuyasha walked into his apartment and threw off his trucker hat and shoes. As he was walking to his room he pulled off his shirt and sighed. He was so bored without Kagome around. Everything about her was amazing. Her spirit, her body, her smile, her laugh, her clothes, her keys… wait! Her keys? Was Kagome home already? Inuyasha suddenly spotted the rest of her things littering the floor in a trail to his bedroom. He immediately thought the worst and bolted there in a split second. He was relieved to find her innocently asleep under his covers, her lips slightly parted. He tiptoed over to the bed, not wanting to wake her, and slowly climbed under the covers. He gently pulled her body flush against his and placed a light kiss on her cheek. He felt her subconsciously snuggle into tighter into him and he wrapped his arms around her. Burying his face in her hair, he soon joined Kagome in sleep….

Kagome blinked her eyes open and smiled feeling Inuyasha around her. She would've stayed in bed had her stomach not been crying out for food. She slowly wiggled out of Inuyasha's arms and made her way to the kitchen. She was eating leftover pizza when Inuyasha came in. He walked up to her and wound around her from the back. He nuzzled her neck.
"You were back soon. How did it go?"
Kagome swallowed the last of her pizza and turned around in his arms. "It went great. I'm exhausted though- which is expected after 24 hours of training." She said with light humor in her voice. She rested her head on his chest. Inuyasha looked at her confusedly.
"Kagome you were gone for about 2 and a half hours…." He said slowly.
`Duh Kagome! You forgot to tell him about the whole inside your mind thing!' Kagome pulled back and dragged Inuyasha to the living room.
"It was two and a half hours in this world. But in mine, it was 24." Inuyasha still looked confused.
"Sit down and close your eyes." Inuyasha did as he was told, curious to find out what exactly Kagome was talking about. Kagome sat down next to him and closed her eyes, once again going through her process of picturing her world. When she finally opened her eyes she was back in paradise. She looked over at Inuyasha who still had his eyes closed.
"Open your eyes Inuyasha."
"What the…." He gawked. Kagome then explained everything about this place. Inuyasha smiled mischievously.
"So you're sayin' that while were here, no one can find us?" Kagome nodded, completely missing his tone. Without a second thought, Inuyasha tackled Kagome to the ground and they rolled down the sand until the waves lightly touched their feet. Inuyasha looked down at her flustered and giggling figure and dove in for a sweet kiss. Kagome all to willingly returned the kiss and to put it simply, the two didn't go back to reality for quite a while….

Kagome sat in Inuyasha's lap in his living room, drinking her morning coffee, Inuyasha with his arms around her- pretty much the usual. They were (as usual) getting intimate, when Miroku waltzed in the front door and went straight for the fridge. Inuyasha pulled away from Kagome and growled low in his throat.
"I could be wrong here Miroku, but don't you have food at your apartment?" asked Kagome, a hint of annoyance in her voice.
"Oh, don't mind me, I'm just here for some eggs, and whatever else is here…." He trailed off. "Carry on!" he said pervertedly. Inuyasha gently lifted Kagome up and set her aside for a moment. He walked over to Miroku who was chugging orange juice and putting in a piece of toast. He grabbed his collar, and Miroku knowing better then to fight back, allowed himself to be dragged out of the door. Inuyasha slammed the door shut and pretended to dust something off his hands.
"Can I at least have my toast?" Miroku yelled boldly from behind the door. Kagome's eye twitched and she grabbed the toast from the toaster. She flung open the door and chucked the toast with all her might at him. He laughed as she slammed the door again.
"Is that all you've got?" he asked tauntingly. Bad move. His eyes widened as he saw Kagome appear in the doorway with the juice container, still full.
"Oh shit…." He said before it smashed into his face without him having a chance to protect himself. That was the last they heard from Miroku that morning.

Sango was lounging on the couch reading a magazine and Kagome stood up to stretch. She walked down the hall and into the guest room to get another magazine, when she saw a gleam of gold on the very top of a shelf. She reached up and pulled it down and realized it was the key to her restaurant. That's right! She had a restaurant! Kagome's mood suddenly brightened as she ran into the living room, bouncing up and down like a little kid who has to pee.
"SANGO SANGO SANGO!!!" she squealed. Sango looked up with amused eyes.
"Kagome Kagome Kagome?" Kagome playfully slapped her arm.
"I found the key… and the place… and I totally forgot… and now its mine!!!" she managed to get out.
"Okay Kagome- I'm sure this is huge, but honestly you are gonna have to talk in complete sentences if you want me to understand." She said slowly. Kagome took a deep breath.
"For our anniversary Inuyasha bought me an empty restaurant and now I get to make it my own and I forgot but remembered because I just found the key and now I have something fun to do!!!!" she squealed.
"Are you serious???" Sango asked in shock. Kagome `psched' her.
"Would I kid about something like this?"
"No!!!" Sango giggled excitedly. "So where is it? What are you going to call it when are you opening it! Ah so many questions!"
"Do you want to go there now?" Kagome said more than asked.
"You read my mind! This is so exciting- I can't believe that he bought you an entire restaurant!!" She continued chatting it up with Kagome until they reached the car, where she paused for a moment.
"Kagome- aren't we going to invite Rin?" she said as though she just remembered something very important. Kagome walked a little closer and talked in a hushed tone with a hand to muffle most of the sound to anyone but Sango.
"I think Rin is a little pre-occupied right now. If you know what I mean- and I know you do." Kagome said with a hinting tone. Sango nodded quickly, taking the hint like a well trained puppy, and compiling herself and her purse into the passenger seat of Kagome's car.
"Don't you think you should have told Inuyasha where you were going, Kagome? I mean, he has been pretty protective lately- more so than usual, if that sort of thing is usual..." Commented Sango as she struggled to connect the two parts of her seatbelt. Kagome sighed humorously at her friends pathetic antics and leaned over to help, while retorting to Sango's previous statement.
"Inuyasha will be fine." She yanked at the seatbelt. "Well maybe not fine, but he will live and," she untwisted a knot in the thick material. "that's all that matters." Kagome finally was rewarded with a satisfying click, after battling with the belt.
"Besides," she continued while fixing her hair in the rear view mirror. "he has my cell phone number and he needs to learn how to let me be independent. He's not my master or something."
"Ok Kagome, you go ahead and stick with that theory, but don't be upset if you come home to the entire city police department and the apartment in ruins." She said a little too seriously. Kagome forced out as happy as a laugh as she could manage before pulling off, but she couldn't keep the images of what destruction Inuyasha might leave in his wake if he didn't know where to find her.
`Maybe I should have at least left a note or something…' she thought to herself.
"No way! He would never be that dangerously compulsive!" she said aloud.
"What?" inquired Sango with a raised eyebrow.
"I didn't say anything did you say anything because I didn't say anything." Kagome sputtered. Sango still stared questioningly.
"Sango I need to focus on driving stop talking to me." She covered retardedly. Sango shrugged her shoulders and turned her attention to the radio dial, which she quickly busied herself with, finding a good station. By the time Sango was satisfied, they were pulling up to the front of the building.
"Oh my god Kagome it's adorable!" she said glancing out of the window. Kagome grinned and stopped the car, almost tripping over herself in her childish excitement as she hopped out of the car. She took the key and put it in the front door, pushing it open slowly then gingerly closing it behind her and Sango. Kagome pulled a left over chair from the wall and plopped down as Sango explored everything.
"I still can't believe it's mine…" she mused aloud. She was snapped out of her reverie as Sango's voice rang from back in the kitchen.
"So do you have any ideas for this place?" she called, her voice getting closer with her obvious movement. "Any plan for renovations or anything?" she said, her body coming into view behind the counter.
"Well I definitely have ideas, but I could use some help…" she said twisting her hair around one finger. Sango rushed across the room and hugged her friend.
"This is going to be so much fun!!" Sango said excitedly.
"And what makes you think it was you I needed help from?" said Kagome jokingly. Sango pulled back putting on her fake `I'm appalled face.' They both laughed and then dove into a deep and animated conversation about the map out of what the place should be. It lasted a lot longer- about 4 or 5 hours longer- than they had originally planned, but they hadn't actually given it any thought. Too bad somebody else did…
So finally, one rough outline and a fancy fondue dinner later, they were on their way home, still riding out their creative high. This night was going great for Kagome, she felt like she was finally getting her life back. She was finally getting back into the swing of things and she felt like she could take anything that was thrown her way- but nothing could have prepared her for what came next.
