The Lonely Hanyou and the Affectionate Monk

Keep it A Secret Kagome part II

They passed through the mystic well moments ago coming out on the other side in the future. Kagome glanced at the familiar surroundings of trees and her family temple. A few feet away was home, her safety zone- well it was supposed to be.

'Geez this just keeps getting worse by the minute. I didn't plan on Inuyasha following me back here. I was hoping to be alone so I could think this through. I mean, sure, talking to him privately would be great if I didn't suddenly get a huge knot in my stomache.'

The futuristic girl glanced back at her brooding friend briefly. The two hadn't spoken since leaving their friends in the past. She just couldn't get her mouth to open. On top of that she had no idea what to say to the hanyou after discovering what she had the night before.

'Oh' She turned back around sulking again.

"You got somethin' to say than say it already."

Kagome froze at the raspy high pitch voice behind her. Inuyasha stopped inches away from her. 'Play it cool or he'll suspect I know something.' She turned to him with a dismissal wave of her hand and a false smile. "Say something, what do you mean? I have nothing to say."

"That's obvious. You've been quiet the whole trip back here. Now what's going on? I know you're only quiet when something's wrong."

"Well maybe you don't know as much as you think. I'm only quiet because- because I am, alright! There's nothing more to it. Now lets go. I'm sure my family will be glad to see you again and I could really use a bath." The raven hair girl rambled on as they continued to walk in hopes of easing her friends worry and throwing him off.

'You can't fool me Kagome. I know something's going on.' He followed her determined to make the girl talk but only when they were alone.

Sliding the wooden door closed behind them Kagome dropped her bag down heavily and sighed. "Moooom, I'm home!" She called through the empty house. Moments later a woman appeared in the living room with a large steaming pot in her hands.

"Oh Kagome, you're here just in time for lunch and you brought Inuyasha, how nice." After that the middle aged mother disappeared back into her kitchen.

"Great I'm starved." Kagome announced walking away from the hanyou up the stairs towards her bedroom. She wanted to get away from Inuyasha as quickly as possible. "Now don't follow me Inuyasha I'm taking a bath before lunch."

"Thanks for the notice." Came his grumbled reply.

"I'm sure grandpa's around here somewhere to keep you company, let him know I'm back okay." She quickly disappeared up the stairs and down the hall to her room.

"You said this wasn't a leisure trip Kagome so hurry it up!" He got no reply. "Hmph."

"Meooow."

Looking down Inuyasha found that the little plump cat Buyo had found its way to him and began rummaging around his legs. With a smirk Inuyasha knelt down and yanked the animal up by the neck. "Might as well amuse myself then. Hey little kitty." He pulled the cat up to his face and sneered at it in a menacing way causing the poor cat to squirm in the demons grasp.

Back in feudal Japan.

"Huuh." Miroku sighed heavily staring out into the nearby hills of the village, arms crossed, staff tucked safely beneath his arm. He turned his head back toward the little cottage. Kaede and Sango were busy mending clothing and chatting quietly, while Shippou napped up on the roof of Kaede's little home. The monk walked away from the peaceful scene glancing once at the large leafless tree that Inuyasha often occupied when they stayed in the village.

'I wonder if Inuyasha said anything to Kagome about us. Would he, after all we've done to keep our secret?'

Continuing to walk away he made his way up the hill and sat down on the fresh grass dropping the staff beside him. Quick flashes of his dog eared lover ran through his mind. He smiled. "You're only gone for a few short hours and I miss you already." He spoke to no one but the image in his mind. "I should be out scouting the village for lonely women right now, bugging them with the same old question of baring me a child. Instead I'm up here alone thinking about you."

He lets out another sigh as he glances out over the water below. Its crystal clear blue shines with the blinding light of sun over head. "Oh well... guess I won't deny the changes you've caused in me." Lying back on the soft grass comfortably he closed his eyes and let those thoughts of his beautiful hanyou flood his bored mind. 'If you were only here we could have passed the time in a better way.' Smirking to himself the monk decided to let his thoughts wander in a more erotic direction to fill the void.

Kagome sank down into the steaming water of the bathtub and came up with bangs dripping wet in her face. Pulling a hand from under the water she wiped the excess drops away. In the serene calm of her bathroom she could hear dishes clanking from the kitchen... 'Mom.' And her grandfather could be heard from outside the window. 'Complaining again as usual.' And then came a sudden horrible shriek from the cat. 'Inuyasha.' School had yet to let out so her little brothers presence in the home was missing.

The dark haired girl relaxed her head back against the tub and wall drawing her knees up, both arms rested on each side of the bath. 'What am I supposed to do about Inuyasha?' She questioned herself. "It's not like I can just go up and say- Hey Inuyasha are you and Miroku dating or something. He'll probably get all defensive and yell making a big scene." She sat up completely and reached for the wash rag that had been floating around at her feet.

'I have to think of something; I'm no good with secrets and this ones huge!' She began washing herself just as her mother called through the door that lunch was ready. "I'll be out in a few minutes!" Sighing she began cleaning her weary body, memories of the hot springs flooding her mind. "Hm." Shaking her head she tried to dissipate the images of her two friends, in such close intimate contact, from her mind. "Maybe I should try subtle hints that I know something’s up and he'll come out and tell me himself."

'Yeah right Kagome, and pigs will fly.' Her mind contradicted her. Finishing up the teen girl left the now soapy water letting it drain as she dried off and got dressed in something comfortable. "Well I'll just wait until after lunch and take Inuyasha, corner him somewhere we can be alone and see what happens." With that plan set she left the bathroom and ran downstairs to join the others.

"Took ya long enough we were tired of waitin'." Inuyasha spoke first. Kagome took a seat opposite him at the table. Her mother placed a small bowl of stew and plate of mini sandwiches in front of her. Then she placed the same items in front of Inuyasha removing already emptied dishes.

"Thanks mom. I see you didn't wait too long Inuyasha since you're already on seconds."

"Yeah, well I had a long night and hadn't eaten much in a while."

'Yeah I bet.' Kagome thought her mind wandering back to the hot springs. She took a sip of tea to attempt hiding the blush creeping up on her face. Clearing her throat Kagome turned in the direction of her grandfather for a distraction. "So grandpa what excuse did you give for my absence at school this time?"

"Well lets see there have been so many these days I can't really keep track anymore." The old man scratched at his beard

.

"Don't tell me you plan on going back to this school." Inuyasha piped up finishing off his second bowl of stew. He slammed the bowl down to the wooden table then pushes his chair back standing up. "We told the others we were getting food and supplies then we'd be right back. That only takes maybe an hour if you're slow."

"What's the rush Inuyasha, someone waiting for you back there?" Realizing what she'd just said a hand flew over her mouth. 'Oops.'

"What's that supposed to mean, of course there's people waitin' for us. You know that. What's with you Kagome? You've been actin' strange all morning."

"Well I know that- I didn't mean-" Stuttering on her words Kagome decided it'd be best to just shut up and downed half her bowl of stew. "Wow this is really great mom."

"Thank you dear. So how long are you two staying this time? If you need anything let me know."

"Don't worry about it we'll be outta here before you know it." Inuyasha answered. He excused himself from the table the best way an ill tempered demon knew how and left the kitchen. "I'll be outside."

Kagome let out a relieved sigh once the hanyou was gone and stared miserably into her food.

"Something wrong with you and Inuyasha, Kagome?" Her grandfather asked.

"No not really." 'But there might be once I tell him what I know.'

Outside Inuyasha walked over to the old mystic well and perched himself down on the edge. He stared down into the blackness. Kagome's words from minutes ago played through his mind as he thought about Miroku.

"Do I have someone waiting for me?" He hopped down from the well and sat his back against the warm stone. 'Heh, knowing that monk he's chasing women around the village.. and Sango's somewhere nearby pissed as all hell.' His eyes watch a passing squirrel pouncing by. 'And what about Sango? From what Shippou and Kagome say she's got some kind of thing for Miroku. How's she gonna handle this?'

"Damn it all." He grumbled. His thoughts wandered to the monk and the night before. "This is all gonna blow up in our faces if anyone finds out about us." His head falls back to look up at the afternoon sky. 'Maybe this is all more trouble than its worth.'

Kagome had paused in helping her mother clean up lunch to watch the dog eared boy from the back door. 'He looks so torn up inside, could it be over him and Miroku or is it because I'm acting strange around him?'

"I've gotta do something." She declared.

"Do what, Kagome?"

"Oh nothing mom, if you don't need me anymore I'm gonna go get Inuyasha."

"Alright dear. I'll start preparing your bag for the trip back."

"Thanks." The teen girl slipped out the back door and took a deep breath of fresh air to calm her nerves. "You can do this girl."

'Its just Inuyasha after all. If he chooses to be with Miroku then it's none of my business. If he doesn't want to tell me now, I won't push. As long as they're happy, right?' She slowly approached the boy who looked to be deep in thought himself. 'So why is this all so hard for me? Am I really hung up on Inuyasha like that?' Clearing her throat she spoke.

"Inuyasha?"

Coming out of his head he looked her in the eyes. "Yeah?"

Taking a seat a few feet beside him the girl looked outwards towards her home avoiding eye contact. Minutes passed as she gathered her nerve sensing the demons impatience she finally spoke. "I- I wanna talk about us."

"Yeah what about us?"

"Well this is gonna sound out of the blue but, what do you think about me?"

An eyebrow rose on the hanyou's head. "Huh, what do you mean 'what do I think'? Are you trying to get me to admit something cause I won't say it and that's that!"

"Rrr, no it's not like that."

'Keep calm Kagome or you'll scare him off and the last thing I wanna do is start a fight.'

"What I mean is you like me right, as a friend?"

Giving her a cocked eye he slowly replied. "Yyyeah I guess."

"I'll take that. So you and I probably couldn't be anything more?" She stared nervously into her lap playing on the hem of her green skirt. 'I'm the one asking the questions here but I feel like I'm under interigation.'

"Kagome what are you getting at? Where's all this coming from?" 'Is she coming on to me?'

"Well..."

"Is this why you've been acting so strange lately." Switching position Inuysha moved himself to sit directly in front of the girl. "Look, it's like I told ya before I like you ok, we're friends and that’s it."

Her voice became suddenly sad and distant as she spoke. "So you could never care for me the way you did- or do Kikyo, huh?"

"What! Kikyo? This has nothing to do with her or you really. I don't know what’s come over you Kagome but I have no interest in any woman got it. Its just me okay?"

Kagome sighed. 'Guess he's not gonna admit to him and Miroku then. Guess I'll just have to accept that Inuyasha and I are friends and nothing more. Its not really so bad if I think about it the right way. I just wish they'd come out and tell us. Us, right what are the others gonna think. Poor Sango will be heart broken.'

Inuyasha stared at the raven haired girl hard, his nerves starting to creep up on him. 'Why isn't she saying anything?'

"Kagome?"

Looking up at him suddenly she smiled an honest one. "I'm fine Inuyasha and thanks for answering my questions." She stood and brushed the back of her skirt off, Inuyasha stood also.

"That's it, you're fine now?"

"Yeah... but if it's alright with you I'd like to stay here another day just to get my head together."

"I thought you said you were fine."

"I am, really. I just need to be alone a while, catch up with my family and friends, ya know. You can head back if you want to and I promise it'll only be for a day and I'll bring all the supplies back with me okay?"

The half demon stood there dumbfounded. "I guess its okay." He scratched his white hair in confusion.

"Good, I'll see ya later and tell the others what I said alright." Turning away from the boy she walked back towards her house and stopped. Looking back she watched Inuyasha disappear into the well; a bright light illuminated from the darkness then faded away. With a sigh Kagome turned back towards home.

'Don't worry Inuyasha, I'll keep your secret as long as you need me to.'

____________

'That Kagome what was up with that? Could she know something, is that why she's been acting funny around me since last night? Then why wouldn't she just out and say it? Huh girls.' Coming out on the other side of the well back in feudal Japan, Inuyasha got a shocking surprise. Standing nearby against a tree was Miroku waiting.

"Miroku?"

"You look surprised... where's Kagome?"

Inuyasha approached meeting the monk halfway. "She ain't comin'... not till tomorrow I suppose. What are you doing here?"

"Well believe it or not I kinda missed you and got bored waiting alone all day. I figured you guys would be back by now so I came to wait."

'He missed me?' Inuyasha thought bewildered.

"And how lucky for me you came alone." Miroku closed the gap between them and gave Inuyasha an honest loving kiss, not one of his usual 'I want you now' kisses. Then he pulled away. "Come on lets not head back to Kaede's just yet." He pulled Inuyasha along to a more secure place they could be alone. And for that moment the hanyou let all his worry and doubts go. No need to bring up a problem that might not even be one.

‘Doesn’t matter what the others think. If they do find out we’ll just take what they give us. Miroku’s mine now and that’s it.’
