Chapter 3

The next morning was a complete blur for Kagome. She could remember Sango telling her that she was smiling and that she was humming songs and that it made her look stupid. She could remember going to her studies and eating breakfast with her mother and Sango on the veranda, but that was pretty much it.

By noon, Kagome had gotten to her senses and was called to her fathers study to talk to him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kagome knocked on the door and heard her father call that she may come in. She walked into the door and saw her father at his desk.
“Come sit, darling,” the king said, and when she sat he continued. “You are growing older, my daughter, and are coming to that age where, in normal circumstances, your father would arrange a marriage for you. I know that you don't want that so I am giving you a choice. Your mother and I have decided that you shall have a ball and at that ball you will decide who you will marry. Then you will have three days to decide. If not then your mother and I will each choose a suitor and you will choose between them.”
Kagome took time to take this in. What was he saying? The person had to be at the ball? So much had happened in the last few days that she was confused about what she wanted.
Her father dismissed her and she walked very slowly back to her room. When she got there she collapsed on her bed and didn't even notice that Inuyasha was laying on her love seat.
“Bad day?” Inuyasha guessed.
“Up until now,” Kagome replied.
“Wh—” Inuyasha was cut off by a knock on the door. Kagome stood up and took Inuyasha's hand, guiding him to the closet and closing the door, flashing him a look of apology.
Kagome scampered to the door and opened it. Hojo was standing there and smiled when she opened the door.
“Hello Kagome,” he greeted her.
“Hello Hojo,” she replied, glancing to the closet door which was now cracked. She could see one of Inuyasha's amazing eyes.
“I was wondering if you would like to talk. I want you to know that you can talk to me and trust me with anything. You seem a bit worried so I thought that you would like this. We could even stay in your room so that you are comfortable,” Hojo suggested.
“Um…that is very nice of you,” Kagome said, while inside she was screaming.
Hojo took that as a yes and took Kagome's arm and let her to one of the two chairs that were in the corner of her room around a small table. They were in plain view of the closet. Kagome took the chair facing the closet and Hojo across from her.
“How have you been, Kagome?” Hojo asked, taking her hand that had been on the table.
“Good,” Kagome asked, looking over to the closet where she could still see Inuyasha's eyes.
“Has anything happened lately that you would like to talk about?” Hojo asked.
Kagome thought to herself, `Nothing except for the fact that I've basically fallen in love with a man with silver hair and dog ears and that you are now prying.' To Hojo she said, “Um…nothing has happened that would cause worry to anyone.”
“Well, that is good,” Hojo asked.
“Hojo, I hate to do this but I am really tired and have a lot to do to get ready for the ball, but do you think I can have some alone time?” Kagome asked.
“Sure,” Hojo responded standing up and walking to the door. Kagome walked with him to the door and before he opened the door, he looked down at Kagome and placed a kiss on her lips. Kagome was startled and put her hand on her chest. Hojo, who thought that that was a good reaction, left without a word.
As the door clicked, Inuyasha zoomed out of the closet and came to where Kagome was standing. He put his hands on her shoulders and looked into her eyes.
“Who the hell is he?” Inuyasha asked, obviously not in the best of moods.
“I can't believe he just did that,” Kagome said. Her knees buckled and she started to fall. She expected to feel the ground but Inuyasha caught her before she even came close.
“My mother invited him here to visit. That would be the third time that I have ever even seen him in my life,” Kagome said, looking up at Inuyasha. He brought her over to her bed and she pulled him onto it. She could tell that he was still irked because he was very tense as she leaned her head against his shoulder.
“What was this about a ball?” Inuyasha asked.
“My father is planning a ball for me because he wants me to choose a husband. If I don't choose one who is at the ball then my parents will both choose someone and I will choose between the two. I have three days after the ball. I guess Hojo will be at the ball,” Kagome explained.
“Oh. You are to be married,” Inuyasha sounded disappointed.
“Will you be at the ball?” Kagome said. As she said this her face became brighter.
“I don't know. Do you want me to go?” Inuyasha asked.
“Yes. I don't want to have to stay with Hojo the whole time,” Kagome smiled.
“When is the ball?” Inuyasha asked.
“In three days,” Kagome answered.
After that comment she stepped off the bed and ran to the door, locking it, and then came back and sat on the bed.
“What was that for?” Inuyasha asked.
“I don't want anyone to know about you except for me,” Kagome said.
Inuyasha still seemed a little tense about the Hojo thing so Kagome asked, “Are you mad at me for Hojo's behavior?”
“I don't like Hojo. I don't want you to go falling in love with him. I don't want you to be thinking about him write now. He is not worth your time,” Inuyasha said, standing up.
“Well, if you are really that jealous then you should have told me,” Kagome yelled.
“I didn't mean it like that. How could you forget about yesterday? I don't know if it meant anything to you, but it meant something to me,” Inuyasha said. With that he walked over to the painting and went through it.
