InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The More Things Stay The Same ❯ Do You Want Me? ( Chapter 8 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
“They’re back!” Shippo trotted inside the hut with Kagome and Inuyasha in tow.
Kagome dropped onto the floor with a huff and handed out the breakfast she had brought everyone.
“How was your visit with your family Kagome-chan?” Sango tried her best to act casual.
“It was fine.”
“Anything interesting happen Kagome-sama?” Miroku chimed in.
“No, nothing.” She said tersely. “Oh, but I would like to know who insisted the moron HAD to come with me?”
“It didn’t go well then?”
“Oh it went fine... just fine… except for the fact that my mother made him follow me to school and he managed to find over a thousand ways to piss me off… that’s all… other than that, fine. Just fine.”
Miroku and Sango exchanged a worried look.
“And to top it all off…..” She shot a look at Inuyasha. “He used up ALL the hot water this morning, and I couldn’t even take a shower before we came back.” She shoved a dish under his nose and closed her eyes and crossed her arms. “First onsen we come to, I’m stopping. I don’t care who’s there, or what we’re doing.”
“So, Sango? Miroku? How was your week?” Inuyasha asked while Kagome was brooding. The question had a definite edge to it.
Kagome, Shippo and Sango ate in silence.
“So, you had the opportunity to attend lessons with Kagome-sama Inuyasha? How interesting. How thrilling. I envy you. What was it like?”
“Dull.” Inuyasha stuffed a roll in his mouth and kept talking. “They teach strange languages… mathematics that serve no purpose… it’s really boring actually.” He swallowed and sighed. “If it wasn’t for the interesting people, I’d have gone insane.”
Kagome made a noise.
Everyone looked at her.
“Inuyasha made a new friend… a sexy blond even.” She said from behind her cup.
“I said it’s not like that!!! I just talked to her while I waited to go home! Good God, you’re like a jealous wi…w…w.....woman! A jealous woman!!” Inuyasha shoved his hands in his hoari sleeves and stuck his nose out. "Keh!."

"Damn that Kagome!" Inuyasha was brooding as he sat next against the cypress tree. "I didn't do anything wrong! It's not like we're commited or anything!"

"But you'd like to be."

"There's nothing wrong with looking at another female!"

"But you didn't even do that, did you?"

"Gods! she's so stubborn!"

"Not unlike someone else we know, ne?"

Inuyasha turned around and slammed a fist into the trunk of the tree in an attempt to silence that voice in his head, the tree itself shuddering in response.

"You see Shippo, that crabby Inuyasha would probably feel much better if he's just take a constitutional to the hot springs himself."
"You're probably right Miroku."
"God-dammit Bozue... you KNOW the women just left to go take that bath Kagome's been whining about all day!"
"That is precisely why I think now would be a most fortuitous time to do the same."
"You're a fucking pervert, you know that right?"
"Maa, maa Inuyasha, what ever do you mean by that? I simply suggested that you take a bath of your own while Kagome is safely in Sango's care and you do not have to worry for her well being."

"You're right Miroku, Inuyasha looks like he does need to relax. He seems very uptight about something.... I wonder what it could be? Something must have happened when he was at Kagome's. Honestly, I don't understand how one Hanyou can screw up so much!"

Inuyasha stood up and glared at the young kitsuni sitting next to Miroku. In one swift move he unsheathed his Tessaiga and cut the cypress cleanly through the trunk before the blade even appeared fully transformed. The tree slowly fell over and Inuyasha calmly and collectedly returned Tessaiga to it's home at his side. He left Shippo and Miroku agape as he stomped off into the woods.
"I am going for a walk. And I'm not going anywhere NEAR the hot springs!!!!!"

Earlier that morning Inuyasha woke up feeling... strange. He had had dreams like that before, sure... many times. He was just more than a little un-nerved to be waking up from a dream like that in Kagome's bedroom... when she was sleeping a few feet away...and her nightclothes had ridden up in very provacative ways. He didn't plan on using all the hot water up... he just didn't feel comfortable coming out after five minutes, or ten.... or twenty.
He had been walking in the forest for some time now, replaying how she had gone into the bathroom, turned on the water, screamed and came running out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around her. She had a few choice words for him, but it really wasn't very intimidating. An intense emotional reaction from her of almost any kind had become perversely charming. Perhaps the fact that Inuyasha wasn't intimidated only served to make her more irritable. The result being a very tense day under her scrutiny, and it was starting to bother him.

"You'd think that in two years she'd forgive me! Dammit! and I didn't even do anything!" Inuyasha looked around the clearing for something to punch. He growled loudly in frustration and kicked a stone in front of him. He missed and the stone stayed imbedded in the forest floor, mocking his impotence at even the simplest of tasks. He picked up the stone and hurled it into the woods.
"Thats it. I've had it. I'm fucking out of here. It's not like the great preistess Kagome needs MY help... And I'm the son of a Taiyokai! I don't deserve this bullshit from my....."

"Your what?"

He rested his arm on a tree and cradled his forehead in his elbow. "Leave....And do what? Look for Kikyo?" The irony of it. The very idea of considering Kikyo as a substitute for Kagome's warmth. It was almost enough to make him laugh.
Maybe he should go off and look for Moryoumaru on his own or something. The group didn't expressly need him. Why did he stay? Sentimental feelings towards someone that didn't want him? To protect someone that neither needed or wanted his protection? She didn't appear to want his help after she suffered at the hands of the bandit. Perhaps it would be best if he took to wandering alone as Kikyo did.
Were he and Kagome destined to be nothing more than aquaintances? exchanging pittances of information at chance meetings? The idea stung. More than he would care to admit.
And what of Kouga? The wolf had suddenly become a lot more pushy. Would he take no for an answer if she gave it? Would she even give it? Would she possibly take Kouga as a mate just because Inuyasha didn't want her to?
No. Kagome was not vindictive. It simply wasn't in her nature, and it was her kind and soothing spirit that he loved the most about her.
"Dammit." the backs of his eyelids started to sting a bit. The woods hushed, and he began to pick up bits of female voices.

"Sango can you pass me the shampoo?"
"Certainly, and would you pass me the loofah?
"Iumademonai."
"Arigato."
Both the women sighed contentedly as muscles unwound in the naturally warm water.
"Kimochii....." Kagome sighed.
Sango cleared her throat. "Kagome-chan.... there is.. something I've been wanting to ask you."
"Whats that?"
"It's about.... Inuyasha."
"What about him?"
"I was wondering how you were feeling? That is, what I mean is, how you feel about him lately."
"He's a stupid annoying jerk."
"So you've said. Many times, especially when he can hear it. Also, the fact that you look at the back of his head when you say so isn't lost on me either."
Kagome attempted a blank expression, which the Taijiya successfully read reguardless.
"Are we not like sisters? I can tell when you aren't being honest with me. Like when I asked if the brown silk I wanted for a wedding kimono looked good. You didn't look me in the eye with confidence then either.
"I didn't want to hurt your feelings!"
"Well, telling me what you really think about Inuyasha isn't likly to hurt my feelings."
Kagome looked like she was about to cry.
"I'm sorry. It's just that the both of you are obviously unhappy. Miroku and I just want things to be more like they used to be.
"What does Miroku know, anyway."
"He knows that last week when you were in danger you called out for Inuyasha. He also thinks that you have dreams about him.
"That... doesn't mean anything."
"You expect me to believe that even in your dreams you fight with him?"
"Yes. No. I don't know."
Sango gave her that soul searching look. The one that made Kagome fear that Sango would know all her secrets if she kept it up much longer.
"No one can keep a grudge up this long. Not against someone who still saves your life on a daily basis if neccesary."
Kagome smiled softly. "He really is something, isn't he?"
"Why? Why do you do this to yourselves Kagome-chan?"
"I... guess I don't want him to know how I really feel."
"What do you mean?"
"If he knows, he might try again to force his feelings with me. We both need to face that I'll never be Kikyo. I can't go through it again. I won't go through it again. Everytime Kikyo is around, he leaves. Just like last week. When I needed him. I know he left to see her."
"Why do you think that? He had no way of knowing you would be in danger."
"Whenever I ask him where he's been he gets a really guilty look on his face. I've gotten to know it very well."
"But even so, wouldn't it be better to feel happy most of the time, and sad some of the time? Than to be miserable all of the time?"
"Maybe. But I can't shake the feeling that if it happened once, It would happen again."
"What, that he will go to Kikyo again?"
"Let us say for the sake of argument that I go to him and tell him my feelings right now. At worst, he'll laugh, or otherwise reject me outright. At best, We'll become a couple again. Do you think I would survive the greif if he left to go see her on my wedding day? or after I had given him my body for the first time? or during the birth of a child?"
"Inuyasha wouldn't do that!"
"He did it before, Why not again? If I can't trust him in small things, how can I trust in large things?"
"I still think you should give him, and happiness, a chance. For all you know it was a misunderstanding."
"You think so?"
"If you love him at all, you'll have to forgive him, no man can keep up the kind of punishment you're giving him forever. It's been close to three years after all, and he was very apologetic from what I remember."
"It broke my heart when I sealed him out of my room. I never felt further away from him, and it nearly crumbled my resolve."
"Is that why you still have his ring?"
Kagome nodded and combed her fingers through her wet hair
"I was going to give it back to him..." The young priestess fingered the diamond and fang ring that hung from a long silver chain around her neck where she had worn shikon shards in the past.
"But I just couldn't do it. It's not like expensive trinkits and tokens boys give girls in my time. Then again, for all I know I just complicated things further."
