Kagome couldn't even scream as her eyes closed against the sight of the claws descending on her. But she didn't feel the sharp pain of tearing flesh that she had expected- just a sudden chill as she felt herself slipping away.
"KAGOMEEEEEEEE!" InuYasha screamed in shock, watching the beast's claws drag THROUGH the young miko as she dropped to the ground. The creature growled in triumph as a flow of pure white spread up its leg.
"Kagome! Wake up, Kagome!" InuYasha yelled, shaking her, but the girl did not stir.
"She will not wake, fool," SesshoMaru called over, glaring at the creature as the white glow flowed to its chest. "It is a spirit beast. The miko is now an empty shell. I told you to run..."
But even as SesshoMaru shifted his grip on Kagura's limp form to better hold Tenseiga and fight again, as InuYasha felt hot tears begin to well up as he stared at Kagome's stiffening form, he heard a pained whine.
The creature was writhing as the white glow- Kagome's soul?- roiled in it's chest. Then it screamed, belching smoke as if it was burning from the inside out. With a last scream, it vanished- not exploding, or melting, or anything. Simply vanished, in a flash of white, which then flowed back into Kagome's body. She gasped, but didn't wake. Still, InuYasha could smell the scent of the living coming from her, and knew that she would be all right. Hearing the scrape of metal as SesshoMaru resheathed Tenseiga, InuYasha didn't turn as he called back.
"Hold it, SesshoMaru. Spirit Beasts? KAGURA? What's going on here?"
