Chapter 5
Once again, she woke up in the Prince’s bed and with him not to be found. Tonight was the night of the Ball and sure enough, everyone was downstairs preparing and the Prince was probably there too. Lifting herself out of the bed she asked one of the servants outside in the hallway to get Sango for her. She needed to talk to her, and this talk was not about serious problems that she could not take it anymore. This talk was going to be ‘I-desperately-need-your-help-and-advice-and-comment-on-what-I-am-about-to- tell-you’ kind of talk.
Sango used to help her with these kinds of things, and she gave the greatest advice, turning to her was her only hope at the moment.
A small knock to the door and Kagome’s train of thought went swerving and Sango poked her head in, “You called for me?”
Kagome nodded and patted the space next to her on the bed. Sango sat with her and looked at her worryingly. “Don’t fret, I’m not going to tell you a…” She searched for an appropriate word, “Problem of mine. All I need is advice, or your comment.”
“On what?” Sango asked slowly, eyeing Kagome.
The Princess told Sango her little situation, what she was feeling and about the Prince’s mood swings. Being saved by him, treating her so nicely one second and then coldly the next, the way he embraced her the night before and how he’d probably be rude to her again today.
“Why didn’t you tell me about all this happening sooner?” Sango asked her after she was done. “You never asked?” Kagome looked down at her hands and sighed.
“Kagome, I honestly don’t know what to tell you,” Sango lifted Kagome’s face to look her in the eyes, “The way he acts towards you is so different. I don’t understand it myself. Maybe you should ask him, but that also might start problems which would make things worse.”
She breathed in slowly and looked at the Princess, “So you’re saying that he’s rude and mean one second and then later on he’s nice and acts almost in a lovingly way?”
Kagome sighed heavily and she looked down again, nodding slowly. “I don’t know what to do Sango, I can’t live with a guy like that. I need direct love, not one day yes and one day no!” Kagome’s eyes pricked with tears. Sango knew well that he was Kagome’s childhood lover, but she never knew that Kagome still harbored some feelings besides hatred towards him.
“You never stopped liking him did you?” Sango asked slowly and Kagome’s eyes shot up to her quickly.
“What? That has nothing to do with this!” Kagome’s tears flooded down her face and Sango wiped away one, “These tears tell me differently…”
So, she was in love with him. And what about him? He never liked her right? He’d ran away the second after she had confessed to him when they were younger. So he didn’t love her. Though what about the times when he acted like he did?

“You can’t keep changing the way you act towards her Inuyasha, you’re going to confuse the poor girl. She probably already is…” Inuyasha had his face buried in his hands and almost regretted asking his dear friend Miroku for advice.
“Sango has told me that Kagome has not been well, and that she is very worried about her,” Inuyasha tensed up and looked up from his hands to Miroku.
“Hasn’t been well? In what way!?” Miroku got up from is perch on his bed and went to stand in front of Inuyasha that was sitting on his dresser.
“Mentally, emotionally. I’m telling you Inuyasha, you’re screwing up her emotions. She doesn’t get what’s going on. Sango’s worried sick about her, every time they talk it’s about how Kagome does not understand you one bit.” Inuyasha’s eyes widened and he froze in place. He could not have been actually messing up her head… could he?
Miroku looked him in the eyes seriously now, “And you should know exactly the reason why she’s so confused with you.” Like Sango, Miroku also knew about Inuyasha and Kagome’s past together. And he also knew very well how that tied into their present problems.
He didn’t know what to do. Too many things were popping up at once in his head. Her broken face as a child, his mother’s words ringing through his ears, his promise he’d kept to so well, the Princess’s beautiful smile. And then confusion. His promise. Was his promise broken? Did it even matter anymore? No, it could not be broken.
He still had time to keep it. Right?
“We should get going, they need help downstairs with setting up.” His thoughts were halted and he took the chance to push it all to the back of his head and focus on tonight.
“Yeah yeah, you’re right. Let’s go.”

“You look marvelous!” Sango smiled and clapped her hands together in accomplishment after she’d finished dressing up Kagome.
“Perfect Sango, you’re amazing at this!” The Queen sat up from the small couch in Kagome’s and Inuyasha’s room.
Walking up to stand behind Kagome, the Queen placed her hands on her shoulders. “You are so beautiful, you make me jealous.” She laughed and smiled.
“Such lies, no one is more beautiful than you!” Kagome turned to look at the Queen and grinned at her.
“Nonsense! I’ll be an old senile woman soon, you’ll just keep getting more gorgeous!” They all laughed and joked some more. The Queen was a very motherly woman, she provided comfort for Kagome and she was very funny and sweet. That reminded Kagome about what the Prince said about her parent’s being there. Was he serious about that?
“Your Majesty? Are my parent’s really going to be there? At the Ball?” Kagome asked turning back to let Sango add some last finishing touches to her hair.
“Why, yes of course. Did you think my son was lying when he informed you of that?” The Queen sat down on the couch again.
“To be honest, yes. I thought he was trying to make me feel even more nervous than I should.” Kagome answered sheepishly. The Queen laughed loudly, throwing her head back.
“Sounds like something he’d do! Well, maybe he took the chance to make you nervous by actually announcing to you first,” The Queen mused.
Kagome groaned and look over to Sango and gave her a hug trying to not rip or ruin anything on the dress or herself, “Thank you Sango, you’re amazing.” Kagome smiled at her genuinely and gave her best friends hand a slight squeeze until she let the Queen lead her out of the room to head to the Ball room.

Inuyasha watched as couples twirled around the dance floor to the slow music and he wanted to go back to his room so badly. He was not in the mood for any special occasions tonight and especially not in the mood for a Ball. Though he was very curious to see how the Princess looked like in her dress. And as though right on cue he saw his Mother leading in the Princess by her hand through the Grand doors and the music slowed slightly.
Applause rang out through the crowd but Inuyasha could not move a muscle. His eyes and mind were too focused on the raven haired beauty being walked over to where he sat on the long table that was raised up by a platform. Her gown flowed around her in every step she took, her pearl lined corset clung to her torso in every corner perfectly. The upper layer of her hair was pulled back with a beautiful clip, leaving her bangs to rim her face.
She was absolutely perfect and then he noticed she was the Princess. Which also made him notice that she was his, forever.
He abruptly shook his head and pushed the thought to the back of his head. That right there, was poking holes into his promise… or whatever was left of it so far.
The Prince watched as the Princess’s eyes fell on him and widened as she gasped. She was not the only gorgeous one here. He was wearing a beautiful red jacket with a white shirt underneath, and black pants with red strips down the side. His hair was pulled back and was tied into a ponytail midway down his back with short strands left in the front. She could see his purple eyes one her as well with the same amount of admiration.
Then she stopped herself, of course he was good looking but that didn’t mean it went the same for his attitude. She turned her head sharply and stuck her nose in the air. She wasn’t going to give in to a snobby, rude, good for nothing Prince today.
They were sat next to each other though neither of them dared to look at the other. They were both too stubborn to do anything and when the toast came to announce their engagement to everyone, they were forced to stand up.
The only thing Kagome and Inuyasha heard through the whole entire speech was, “I am just so honored to announce the engagement of my son, the Prince, to the Princess of our neighboring land!” Applause rung out into the room loudly and Kagome’s face turned beat red. Then the Prince placed his arm around her waist and pulled her near him. She gasped and looked up at the Prince incredulously that was looking over at his father.
“Thank you Father, for that wonderful speech.” He smiled and clicked glasses with him. Kagome could see her Parents sat on one of the grand tables near hers and they were smiling at her. She ignored them most of the time, but she always ended up feeling guilty.
When they all had their dinner it was time to dance, though the Prince and Kagome were not in the mood to dance together. They both knew Inuyasha had only done that to please the crowd, to show that their relationship would be stable and that they were both suitable to lead the country next.
Kagome and Inuyasha stayed on the side and chatted with some of the people, but they were across the room from each other.
A tall dark haired man decided to finally build up his courage, and heavy ego, to get up and ask the beautiful Princess for a dance.
His hair was pulled back into a high ponytail and his skin was a dark tan color. He waited until Kagome finished talking to one of the guests and he introduced himself with a bow.
“I am Kouga, a Duke. It is the most greatest pleasure to meet you,” He grabbed her hand and kissed it softly, “May I have this dance?”
She blinked and her face heated up, but before she could say anything the man named Kouga lead her to the floor and he placed one hand firmly on the small of her back and with the other held her hand in his.
“You are so beautiful, it’s too bad you’re being married off to such a disaster of a Prince.” Kouga said, smiling at her and leaned his face over slightly.
Everyone stared at them, and she remember that this was practically her engagement party. She was feeling a little embarrassed and was about to protest as she pulled her face back a little when she felt a firm hand being pushed in between them. The next thing she knew, the Duke had been thrown all the way to the other side of the room smashing into the wall and sliding down slowly.
Kagome turned her shocked eyes to see Inuyasha glaring viciously across the room where Kouga was now starting to get up.
He snarled, “Don’t lay a hand on her.” Kouga got up fully then and looked up at the Prince with the cockiest smile, “Now that’s up to her, isn’t it?” Everyone now had stopped and guards had piled in from every entrance, blocking anyone’s exit.
The Prince raised his hands to the guards, and they understood he wanted to do this all by himself. Everyone had grouped up behind the guards except for the King.
“Stop this nonsense! There will be no fighting at such an occasion!” The King turned to the guards, “Escort the Duke out of here this instant!” He bellowed at them and they quickly grabbed Kouga and led him out. The Queen and my Mother came to me then and led me to my room, probably for an explanation on what Inuyasha saw that made him so furious.
“Kouga was just being nice, but a little too nice, he leaned in,” Kagome tried to explain, “And I panicked, I didn’t know what to do. I was going to tell him to stop but Inuyasha came and yeah…”
The Queen sighed and shook her head, “I told my husband we shouldn’t have invited him. We always have trouble with him,”
Kagome’s mother stroked her back and leaned against her, “It’s okay sweetie, everything’s alright now.” Kagome leaned into her as well, missing the warmth and kindness of her Mother.
The Queen stood up then and laid her hand on Kagome’s shoulder, “Well, it’s late and we should all rest now after this long day.”
Kagome gave her Mother one last tight hug and she was off. She changed into her nightgown and then climbed into the bed.
Sometime during the night, the Prince had came back in from his talk with Miroku and he saw the Princess on the bed. A soft, warm smile stretched across his face as he saw her peaceful look. He caressed her cheek softly and pushed back a strand of her hair from her face.
He knew very well his promise was not going to last much longer, and the weird feeling that he always got after he’d asked himself what was happening to his promise didn’t come.
‘I guess my subconscious knows it’s already gone..’ He thought to himself and chuckled softly.
With one last stroke to her cheek, he changed and slipped into bed and pulled Kagome over to him and held her tightly in his arms.
Everyday always ended like this; First he was rude and cold towards her, than he was sweet and loving. He thought about what Miroku said about having to watch the things he was doing because he was confusing her too much. But he was happy where he was, with her in his arms.
He heard her mumble something silently and then her arms wrapped around him. He buried his face into her hair and inhaled deeply, memorizing her intoxicating scent.
Then he felt something shatter inside of him. The small part that was left of his promise, crumpled and disintegrated.
That night was the last of his promise, now he had a new one. To always keep this beautiful girl by her side and fight for her love.
